Book excerpt: A reliable estimate of radon emissions to the environment from underground uranium mines was obtained through measurements of radon in ventilation exhaust air at 24 uranium mines and estimates of radon release from ore piles and waste piles at mines and in water pumped from mines. Three additional mines sampled in 1978 but not in 1979 were included in the overall results. Total production of U3O from the mines thus far sampled represent about 63% of total 1978 US production from underground mines. Wide variation in radon emission per unit of production was shown from mine to mine; hence, it became necessary to sum all radon from all mines measured and divide by the sum of all U3O8 production in 1978 from these mines to arrive at a valid estimate of Ci per ton of U3O8. This value was found to be 26.7 per ton or 5400 Ci/RRY (182 metric tons). The radon emitted in mine ventilation air was by far the dominant source, with other than ventilation exhaust sources accounting for less than three percent of radon in ventilation exhaust. Other observations of interest in this study were the diurnal fluctuations of radon with barometric pressure and the statistically significant relationship between radon released per year from a mine and the cumulative ore production at the time of radon measurement. The linear relationship between Ci/yr of radon and cumulative ore accounted for about half the variability. Several sources of random errors and possible biases were evaluated using some simple descriptive statistics insofar as the current data permitted. Errors in air flow rate in the vents sampled, fluctuations in radon emission with time of day, counting instrument calibration and production rate were estimated and combined to give an uncertainty of about +- 24 percent at the 95 percent confidence level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 222Rn concentration in exhaust air is being measured at underground uranium mines in the Grants, New Mexico area. The objectives of the work are to determine relationships between U3O production and the mine characteristics and practices relative to 222Rn emission. Concentrations in the vent air from two mines ranged from 80 nCi/m3 to 3800 nCi/m3 during a month of observations. Diurnal radon emission patterns were seen for each mine which were inversely related to barometric pressure. The average diurnal emission patterns on weekends when no mining occurred were very similar to those on weekdays during active mining, indicating that the mining activities had little short-term effect on those radon emissions. The radon emission rate from each mine vent showed a correlation with the associated ventilated surface area and the cumulative tons of U3O8 extracted there, and a higher correlation with cumulative tons of ore extracted. Grab samples of vent air collected at 14 additional mines in the Grants area showed radon concentrations from 7 nCi/m3 to 21,000 nCi/m3. The emission rates ranged from .01 Ci to 10 Ci per vent per day. Ore production rate estimates were available for seven of the mines and, based on these rates, a tentative average radon emission rate of 4300 Ci of 222Rn per Annual Fuel Requirement (AFR) of U3O8 from undergrounduranium mines was obtained. Aboveground sources of radon at one mine were estimated to release approximately 5% of the total from that mine. Using this estimate, a total of 4510 Ci of 222Rn released per AFR is predicted from underground uranium mining operations during the active life of the mine. After mine closure, the waste piles at that mine are estimated to continue released radon at a rate of 21 Ci/yr per AFR.
