Design and instrumentation of the closed chamber test apparatus for the equation of state and the burning rate measurements are included. An open ballistic chamber test apparatus with a moving projectile, for measurement of projectile friction and for verification of the interior ballistic performance at high chamber pressures is described. Book excerpt: Nonmetallized double-base and composite propellant, metallized composite propellant, and ammonium perchlorate (AP)/binder sandwich combustion were studied in standard and high acceleration environments. Experimental techniques used were high speed motion pictures, tow-color schlieren, laser schlieren, and centrifuge mounted combustion bombs. It was found for double-base propellant that the temperature increased continuously from the surface into the visible flame. Acceleration induced burning rate augmentation occurred and resulted in elimination of the visible flame. Acceleration apparently modified the surface or subsurface zones. AP/binder sandwich combustion was also found to be acceleration sensitive with binder flow-AP interactions proposed as the mechanism. Composite propellants burned with local diffusion flames to pressures as slow as 100 psi. A comparison is made between AP/binder sandwich combustion and propellant combustion. (Author).

Book excerpt: In order to explore the limits of validity of the granular diffusion flame theory of solid propellant combustion in the limiting low pressure regime, a systematic study of burning rates and particle size effects has been conducted at subatmospheric pressures. In addition, flame extinction phenomena were explored and flame photographs and chemical analysis of reaction residues were carried out. In connection with the extinction study, a new regime of combustion was discovered for certain polysulfide composite propellants containing fine oxidizer particles. When the flames of these propellants are visibly extinguished by reducing the environmental pressure, a combustion wave continues to propagate through the propellant with the formation of an ash. There are at least two possibilities for interpreting this flameless regression. The first interpretation is that it is evidence of an oxidation reaction taking place at the solid surface or inside the thermal wave. The second interpretation is that the combustion wave in an AP propellant propagates simply as the result of exothermic pyrolysis of the AP without additional heat from subsurface or surface oxidation. Book excerpt: This final scientific report reviews the progress from May 1979 to December 1982 on a program to study various aspects of solid propellant combustion phenomena. The original program included three specific areas of study: Diffusion flame analysis; Kinetic mechanisms of double base propellants; Interaction effects of distributed particle combustion in acoustic environments. The diffusion flame is the controlling mechanism in the combustion of composite propellants. Therefore, a thorough understanding of diffusion flames is prerequisite to understanding solid propellant combustion, and was the objective of one task of the program. The second task of the program was motivated by the desire to better understand transient combustion such as occurs in DDT and combustion instability. Double base propellant combustion is dominated by the flame kinetics which appear to be more easily studied than those of composite propellants. The final task of the program was aimed at understanding the effect of stability additives on combustion instability. During the final year of the contract, work on the first two tasks was discontinued and all work was concentrated on the third task. Interim reports covering the initial work have been published in December 1980 and February 1982. This report summarizes the work performed during the final phase of the contract covering the time from October 1981 through December 1982. Keywords: Solid rocket propellants.
