Book excerpt: Tests were conducted to determine the rate of fatigue crack growth in terms of the applied stress and current crack length in mild steel sheet subjected to cyclic bending stresses, which were induced by resonant vibration. It was found that the rate of extension was proportional to the fourth power of the range of applied stress and was influenced by the value of the mean stress. It was also found that, for constant stress cycles, the rate of crack propagation was a constant; this was in agreement with the Weibull theory of crack propagation. As a consequence of the tests it was found that a fatigue crack did not appreciably reduce the resonant frequency of the test beams until the crack had progressed most of the way across the specimen.

Book excerpt: Fundamental aspects of fracture mechanics, fatigue, and fatigue crack propagation are reviewed in the first five chapters of this report, as well as a number of concepts and methodologies employed in fracture control & repair. A comprehensive review of a number of constant- & variable-amplitude fatigue crack growth models is also provided. Chapters 6 & 7 focus on the experimental testing program employed to investigate the fatigue crack growth in specimens of centre-cracked 350WT steel (used in ships) subjected to semi-random loading (which simulates ocean wave loading) consisting of various combinations of intermittent tensile overloads and compressive underloads. The program also included the measurement of the threshold stress intensity factor, since some fatigue crack growth models are sensitive to this parameter. Finally, a nonlinear finite element investigation was conducted to examine the stress state & associated residual stress, thereby complementing the experimental findings. The work has resulted in the identification & development of suitable models & model parameters for fatigue crack propagation in 350WT steel under variable amplitude loading.

Book excerpt: Mild steel (SAE 1015) plate specimens with central circular holes were used to study crack propagation in the inelastic strain region. These thin plates were subjected to completely reversed constant amplitude cyclic strains in a servocontrolled testing machine. Fatigue crack propagation results in the inelastic strain region showed that the rate of crack growth is a polynomial function of the equivalent stress intensity factor developed in this work. The relation is similar to the equation proposed by Paris and Erdogan for an elastic case and describes crack propagation rates for both elastic and inelastic strain levels. The equivalent (or modified) stress intensity factor indirectly represents actual crack tip stresses and strains and reduces to the elastic stress intensity factor. With the aid of the results of the present study, other methods proposed by various investigators for predicting crack propagation rates are also discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stainless steel is widely used in the industries nowadays due to their good properties of resistance to corrosion and rust. Due to its application in many industries, an analysis of fatigue crack growth was carried out to study the effect of stress ratio. The study of fatigue crack growth is important since fatigue has become a critical issue in industries that plague any structures that is subjected to cyclic and variable loading. A necessary analysis of fatigue crack growth need to be done to study the behaviour of fatigue crack growth. The effect of stress ratio on fatigue crack growth can affect the behavior of fatigue crack growth. In the project, three different stress ratios were used to investigate the effect of stress ratio towards crack growth. As the stress ratio increase, the stress intensity threshold and fracture toughness will decrease. This shows that an increasing stress ratio will lead to material failure. This happens when the stress intensity factor has entered the critical region where it exceeds the fracture toughness value. To remain the material unbroken or fail, the stress intensity factor value must not exceed the value of stress intensity threshold where below the stress intensity threshold value, the material remains stable. An analysis of fatigue crack growth was done using MSC software where the stress analysis is done using MSC PATRAN and MSC NASTRAN. After the results of stress analysis were obtained, the analysis of fatigue crack growth with different stress ratio was done using MSC FATIGUE software. Life prediction of the material is determined using Modified Paris Law equation of Fracture Mechanics. At certain level of stresses, below the endurance limit of the material, the effect of stress ratio does not affecting the life of the material. This is because the stress is not big enough to break the material.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was made of crack propagation in low-cycle fatigue of mild-steel plate specimens and has indicated that during crack propagation the type of loading cycle will affect markedly the fatigue behavior. Several types of reversed loading cycles have been included in the investi gation, namely constant load, reduced loads and constant stress. In the constant-load tests the stress increases throughout the test as the crack propagates, and the rate of crack propagation continuously increases. If the load range is reduced throughout a test (reduced-load test) so as to produce constant net-section stresses, the rate of crack growth will decrease throughout the test. (Author).

Book excerpt: The last two decades have seen a steady and impressive development, and eventual industrial acceptance, of the high energy-rate manufact turing techniques based on the utilisation of energy available in an explo sive charge. Not only has it become economically viable to fabricate complex shapes and integrally bonded composites-which otherwise might not have been obtainable easily, if at all-but also a source of reasonably cheap energy and uniquely simple techniques, that often dispense with heavy equipment, have been made available to the engineer and applied scientist. The consolidation of theoretical knowledge and practical experience which we have witnessed in this area of activity in the last few years, combined with the growing industrial interest in the explosive forming, welding and compacting processes, makes it possible and also opportune to present, at this stage, an in-depth review of the state of the art. This book is a compendium of monographic contributions, each one of which represents a particular theoretical or industrial facet of the explosive operations. The contributions come from a number of practising engineers and scientists who seek to establish the present state of knowledge in the areas of the formation and propagation of shock and stress waves in metals, their metallurgical effects, and the methods of experimental assessment of these phenomena.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue of structures and materials covers a wide scope of different topics. The purpose of the present book is to explain these topics, to indicate how they can be analyzed, and how this can contribute to the designing of fatigue resistant structures and to prevent structural fatigue problems in service. Chapter 1 gives a general survey of the topic with brief comments on the signi?cance of the aspects involved. This serves as a kind of a program for the following chapters. The central issues in this book are predictions of fatigue properties and designing against fatigue. These objectives cannot be realized without a physical and mechanical understanding of all relevant conditions. In Chapter 2 the book starts with basic concepts of what happens in the material of a structure under cyclic loads. It illustrates the large number of variables which can affect fatigue properties and it provides the essential background knowledge for subsequent chapters. Different subjects are presented in the following main parts: • Basic chapters on fatigue properties and predictions (Chapters 2–8) • Load spectra and fatigue under variable-amplitude loading (Chapters 9–11) • Fatigue tests and scatter (Chapters 12 and 13) • Special fatigue conditions (Chapters 14–17) • Fatigue of joints and structures (Chapters 18–20) • Fiber-metal laminates (Chapter 21) Each chapter presents a discussion of a speci?c subject.

Book excerpt: The influences of a superheated steam environment and temperature on the nearthreshold crack growth behaviour of mild steel during rotating bending fatigue were investigated. A fatigue machine in which rotating bending is simulated was designed and built to allow continuous crack growth measurement. Experiments compared the threshold stress intensities (???Kth) for air at 24 ʻC, air at 160 ʻC and steam at 160 ʻC. Air at 160 ʻC yielded the lowest threshold stress intensity in both cases. Oxide thicknesses in the vicinity of the threshold were estimated from temper colours. The difference in threshold stress intensities can be explained by the concept of oxideinduced crack closure.
