Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the though that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemi nation. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 37 (thesis year 1992) a total of 12,549 thesis titles from 25 Canadian and 153 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 37 reports theses submitted in 1992, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Electrochemical Wastewater Treatment for Denitrification and Toxic Organic Degradation Using Ti-based SnO and RuO Electrodes 2 2 submitted by Xie, Zhaoming for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in December 2006 Many wastewater pollutants, including toxic organic compounds and nutrients at a high concentration, are difficult to treat with conventional treatment processes. Wastewater treatment technologies require continuous advances to ensure that the effluent continues to comply with more stringent discharge standards and to improve the cost-effectiveness of the practice. The electrochemical (EC) method is an advanced oxidation process that has shown promise as an effective treatment alternative for wastewater containing toxic substances. This study focused on the development of the electrochemical technology for degradation of aromatic and chlorinated aromatic organic pollutants and for nitrogen removal from landfill leachate and sewage sludge liquor. A double-layer coating technique was employed to make titanium-based catalytic active electrodes in Ti/SnO-Sb-Al for EC organic oxidation. The experimental results show that the Ti/SnO -Sb-Al anode is much more effective for electrolysis of phenol and chlorophenol than other conventional anodes of Pt, Ti/RuO and Ti/IrO . For phenol (100 mg/L) treatment, complete organic removal was 2 achieved after 5 hrs on anode Ti/SnO -Sb-Al at 20 mA/cm, compared with only 36% and 12% organic reductions provided by the Pt and Ti/RuO anodes, respectively. Similarly, for chlorophenol electrolysis, the best treatment performance was obtained with anode Ti/SnO -Sb-Al, followed by Pt and then Ti/RuO . Analysis with the High 2 2 Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) revealed many intermediate products during the EC process, from aromatic compounds to aliphatic acids, which were oxidized rapidly by Ti/SnO -Sb-Al but accumulated in the Pt and Ti/RuO cells. In 2 2 addition, formation of colored polymeric materials occurred in the Pt and Ti/RuO electrolyzed solutions. Based on the EC degradation performance and the HPLC results, modified pathways of phenol and chlorophenol electrolysis at different types of electrodes were proposed. The different electrodes were characterized for their electrochemical behavior and surface properties. Compared to the Pt and Ti/RuO anodes, Ti/SnO -Sb-Al had a 2 2 considerably higher overpotential of oxygen evolution according to the voltammograms, which would facilitate the production of hydroxyl radicals. Direct phenol and chlorophenol oxidation could take place on the Ti/SnO -Sb-Al surface but not on the Pt and Ti/RuO anodes. The Ti/SnO -Sb-Al electrode also had apparently a 2 2 higher affinity with organic substances than Ti/RuO . It is argued that the anodic property has a significant influence on the kinetics, pathway and mechanism of organic electrolysis. Specific surface treatment such as the SnO -Sb-Al coating provides the anode with a catalytic function for rapid degradation of toxic organics. In addition, electrochemical denitrification experiments were performed using a lab-scale system with Ti/RuO -based mesh electrode plates for treating saline sewage sludge li

Book excerpt: Wastewaters from textile dyeing operations often contain organics compounds with strong color accompanied by a high concentration of sodium chloride (NaCl), and electrochemical treatment is a promising way to treat the waste. The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the impact of design and operational parameters on decolorization efficiency and effluent toxicity during electrochemical treatment of wastewater containing the dye Acid Alizarin Violet N (AAVN; 14.65 mg/L) and NaCl (0.35 M). Cell configuration (split and undivided) and electrical current density (4 and 8 mA/cm 2) were the chosen reactor design parameters and pH (4, 7 and 10) and applied current (72 and 144 mA) were the chosen operational parameters. Extent of removal, power consumption, and effluent toxicity were the design criteria signifying efficiency, cost effectiveness, and environmental impact of the process. The split cell configuration provided the highest color removal, consuming significantly lower power than the undivided cell. Extent of decolorization was higher at pH 4 than that at pH 10 and pH 7. Increasing applied current increased the extent of color removal in the split cell whereas performance was unaffected in the undivided cell. Microtox ® toxicity test showed that effluents collected from more efficient conditions (split cell at pH 4) revealed the highest toxicity. In contrast, negligible toxicity was found in the effluent from the least efficient undivided cell - pH 10 conditions. A design strategy that maximizes the efficiency is in direct conflict with the goal of minimizing effluent toxicity. This study demonstrates the importance of considering end product toxicity in addition to more traditional criteria in making suitable decisions for electrochemical reactor design.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The use of dyes has become very significant across various industries such as textiles, paper, and clothing. The organic chemical composition of dyes is a major concern when discharging wastewater not only into the environment, but also within wastewater treatment plants. Dye effluent consists of high chemical oxygen demand (COD) and also color, components that require treatment before discharge. As a result, federal legislation has required industries that discharge high components in wastewater to undergo treatment within the plants. Within literature, authors have considered various biological, physical, and chemical methods of treating dye wastewater. Recently, electrocoagulation/electroflotation (ECF) has been an additional method of treatment that has been considered for the treatment of dye wastewater. Two separate studies are considered. First, Acid Yellow 11 (AY11) at a concentration of 25 mg/L (by weight) underwent treatment from three different coagulants (Alum, Ferric Sulfate, and Ferric Chloride), under three different strengths (5 mg/L, 10 mg/L, and 15 mg/L), and two different initial pH considerations (4 and 7) for the purpose of analyzing color removal. Following the study, the results were collaborating into a response surface methodology, developing an equation for the three different coagulants. In addition, a Box-Behnken design has been setup for the purpose of considering the effects of pH, dye concentration, dye type, coagulant type and strength on the efficiency of electrocoagulation. These values will be analyzed using statistical analysis, along with toxicity study done on the effectiveness of removing toxic contaminants from the wastewater. Finally, a photo-oxidation study was completed on Acid Orange 7 (AO7) synthetic dye wastewater for the purpose of determining the effects of photo-oxidation based on dye concentration, catalyst type and dose. Langmuir-Hinshelwood coefficients were developed based on the results of this experiment.

Book excerpt: The use of synthetic chemical dyes in various industrial processes, including paper and pulp manufacturing, plastics, dyeing of cloth, leather treatment and printing, has increased considerably over the last few years, resulting in the release of dye-containing industrial effluents into the soil and aquatic ecosystems. The textile industry generates high-polluting wastewaters and their treatment is a very serious problem due to high total dissolved solids (TDS), presence of toxic heavy metals, and the non-biodegradable nature of the dyestuffs in the effluent. The chapters in this book provide an overview of the problem and its solution from different angles. These problems and solutions are presented in a genuinely holistic way by world-renowned researchers. Discussed are various promising techniques to remove dyes, including the use of nanotechnology, ultrasound, microwave, catalysts, biosorption, enzymatic treatments, advanced oxidation processes, etc., all of which are "green." Green Chemistry for Dyes Removal from Wastewater comprehensively discusses: Different types of dyes, their working and methodologies and various physical, chemical and biological treatment methods employed Application of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in dye removal whereby highly reactive hydroxyl radicals are generated chemically, photochemically and/or by radiolytic/ sonolytic means. The potential of ultrasound as an AOP is discussed as well.
