Book excerpt: An investigation was conducted in the 16-ft transonic tunnel of the propulsion wind tunnel facility at the Arnold Center to evaluate base heating of the Saturn S-1 booster. Various turbine exhaust stack configurations were tested over a Mach number range of 0.6 to 1.5, an altitude range of 10,000 ft to 42,000 ft, and a missile angle-of-attack range of 0 to -7 1/2 deg. Rocket engines using liquid oxygen and RP-1 were used to simulate the full-scale engine exhaust, and hydrogen was used to simulate the turbo-pump exhaust. Base burning at all test conditions was eliminated for only one of the turbine exhaust stack configurations. Various degrees of base burning were obtained for all other exhaust stack configurations, but no burning occurred at a free-stream Mach number of 1.5 for the trajectory altitude. At altitudes above 29,000 ft, only localized base burning occurred and the accompanying heating rates were low.

Book excerpt: An investigation was conducted to determine the base recirculation characteristics of several different turbine exhaust ducts on a 5.47% scale model of the Saturn SA-1 booster afterbody. Hydrogen gas was used to simulate the combustible products of the turbine exhaust. Base heating and base pressure data were taken with external airflow at Mach numbers 1.63 (33,000 to 45,000-ft altitude) and 3.07 (70,000 to 80,000ft altitude). The data indicated no base burning resulting from circulation of the combustible turbine exhaust gases. Flame shield calorimeter data indicated the maximum heat transfer rate at the center of the shield to be 113 Btu/sq ftsec. Flame shield pressure data indicated that the flow out from the flame shield region between adjacent engines became sonic at approximately 60,000-ft altitude. (Author).

Book excerpt: An investigation was conducted to determine the base recirculation characteristics of the simulated propellant pump turbine exhaust gases of a 5.47-% scale model of the SA-1 Saturn afterbody. Gaseous hydrogen was used to simulate the combustible turbine exhaust gas of the fullscale missile. Base heating and pressure data were obtained at simulated flight trajectory conditions of M=0.8 0.8(16,000-ft) and M=1.15 1.15(27,500-ft) using several turbine exhaust duct configurations. In addition, the effect on base heating with one engine inoperative, of variation in turbine exhaust gas momen um, of finned-model operation, of variation in engine O/F ratio, and of variation in altitude was investigated. At both simulated flight trajectory conditions, the lowest base heating rates were obtained using a streamlined turbine exhaust duct configuration. The following conditions reduced base heating, based on data obtained with the long turbine exhaust ducts: operation with one engine inoperative, increased turbine exhaust gas discharge momentum, and increased engine O/F ratio. Book excerpt: A 0.04-scale model of the Saturn V Missile was tested at transonic Mach numbers to determine Reynolds number effects on static stability characteristics and pressure distributions in the tail barrel region at high angles of attack. Reynolds number based on the model diameter varied from 0.9 to 8.4 million. Angle of attack was varied from -3 to 16 deg. The center of pressure varied with angle of attack over a distance of approximately one model diameter.

Book excerpt: Flutter characteristics of a 30-deg segment of the full-scale Saturn S-IVB stage were obtained at Mach numbers from 1.30 to 1.60 for various combinations of axial-compressive loads and panel differential pressures. Flutter was encountered in one or more panels when sufficient axial load was applied to either partially or completely buckle the panels. The flutter was amplitude limited, and no structural failures occurred on any of the panels as a result of flutter. However, the test had to be terminated when two panels in the fifth bay were statically buckled beyond their elastic limit and permanent deformation resulted. A calibration test was conducted prior to the flutter test to determine the optimum design of the fixture used to support the model. Also static-pressure and boundary-layer surveys were made on the model at tunnel conditions comparable to those of the flutter phase. (Author).
