This case study uses role theory to examine the perceptions of administrators and teachers on the role space of educational interpreters.Through a series of qualitative interviews with 17 state administrators, district administrators, school administrators, general education teachers and teachers of the deaf, and a statewide questionnaire with 18 respondents the perceptions of the role space of educational interpreters in South Carolina are examined. Data from interviews and questionnaire responses are analyzed to determine common themes contributing to role ambiguity, role conflict and role overload for educational interpreters.Factors contributing to different perceptions among administrators and teachers include: the role metaphor ascribed to the educational interpreter; the status of the educational interpreter in the school system; definitions of who is perceived to be responsible for the education of deaf students; and whether the school district is in an urban or rural area.Findings reveal the perceptions of administrators and teachers in the educational system set the stage for a series of role conflicts and subsequent role overload for educational interpreters. Implications and some concrete future direction to making educational interpreting more effective are discussed." -- Abstract

The study was to help highlight the plight of girls who drop out of school as a result of pregnancy with a view of giving them a chance to continue with education through re-admission. To achieve this objective the study examined students’ perception on head teachers’ administrative, counseling and support roles. Students’ perception was the dependent variable whereas the head teachers’ age, gender, educational level and teaching experience were independent variables. The study was based on Tinto’s (1975) model of student retention which stipulates that a student persists or drops out depending on their degree of both academic and social integration. The research design was a descriptive survey where questionnaires and interview schedule were used to collect data. Target populations were form three students, head teachers, counseling teachers, class teachers and the District Quality Assurance and Standards Officer. Sampling techniques used in the study were Simple Random, Stratified and Purposive. Reliability of the instruments was established through a pilot study in a school outside the study area. Cronbach’s alpha was used to assess the reliability coefficient that yielded a value of 0.82. Validity of instruments was determined through expert judgment involving discussions with other researcher’s and colleagues. Data was analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The study established that head teachers had not implemented the girls’ re-admission policy to the expectation as reflected in the poor discharge of administrative, counseling and support roles. It was also established that head teachers’ educational level and teaching experience had a positive influence on administrative role whereas teaching experience had a positive influence on both counseling and support roles. The study recommended; the Kenyan Ministry of Education to review the policy so as to come up with appropriate guidelines for implementation, counseling to be strengthened in schools , further training for head teachers and introduction of support programs for the girls who drop out of school due to pregnancy.

The study also seeks to contribute more quantitative data to the field of action learning as called upon by researchers. The goal of this case study is to discern any impact felt by the certified teaching staff of schools that have a building administrator participate in eight sessions of action-learning over one summer. The guiding research question asks, what, if any, impact on a building level administrator's leadership practices result after their participation in an Action-Learning program? Data collection and analysis were structured to focus on the impact of the following collaborative environmental factors among certified teachers following their administrator's participation in the action learning program: Perceived School-Leader Support, Actual Participation in Decision Making, Satisfaction with Participation in Decision Making, and Formalization of Participation in Decision Making. These factors were measured with a pre-survey and post survey following administrator participation. Additional analyses of two more factors include Teacher's Orientation Toward Student Performance and Teacher Collaboration. With Kirkpatrick and Kirkpatrick's (2016) model for program evaluation in mind, this study focuses within the fourth level and measures leading indicators toward desired results. Findings of the Related Samples Wilcoxon Signed Rank test indicate a significant, positive difference from pre-survey to post survey for Perceived School-Leader Support for Collaboration.
