This book was released on 1982 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adhesives are being used increasingly to bond metal structural components. For example, an extensive effort is underway to adhesively bond Ti (6% Al -4% V) sections in advanced aircraft (1). Several chemical pretreatments have been developed to clean the alloy surface to obtain better adhesive bonding (2). The strength and durability of these adhesive bonds depend in part on the properties of the oxide layer present on the alloy surface. A number of experimental techniques including electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (3,4), scanning (transmission) electron microscopy (4,5), reflectance visible-infrared spectroscopy (6), secondary ion mass spectrometry (7), Auger electron spectroscopy (2,8), and ion scattering spectroscopy (7) have been used to characterize this oxide layer. The surface oxide layer is generally accepted to be titanium dioxide. It has been reported that the layer on the Ti 6-4 surface may indeed, be the rutile (8) phase of TiO2. However, because of its low surface area it is difficult to characterize the oxide layer directly on the metal surface, and to study the interaction of the oxide layer with polymer adhesives. jg p18.

Book excerpt: This report describes the continuation of a study of aluminum 2024-T3 alloy and titanium 6Al-4V alloy adherends, adhesively bonded with epoxy HT424 adhesive. The adherend surface properties, after standard preparation treatments, were characterized with a number of surface tools; Ellipsometry, surface potential difference (SPD), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), electron, scanning electron and optical microscopy, contact angle, photo electron emission, and light scattering. A study was made of bond strengths after FPL etching and phosphoric acid anodizing and after aging of these surfaces in water vapor and in water. By calibrating the above mentioned instruments for hydroxide and organic films of known chemistry, it has been possible to discern the mechanism of aging degradation. The mechanisms of bond failure have been greatly ellucidated by a careful study of the data. Suggestions are given to improve bond strength and stability based upon the analysis. (Author).

Book excerpt: The report describes a study of aluminum 2024-T3 alloy and titanium 6Al-4V alloy adherends, adhesively bonded with an epoxy HT424 adhesive. The adherend surface properties, after standard surface preparation treatments, were characterized with a number of surface tools. A study of bond strengths after adherend aging and bond aging in humidity chambers has been correlated with surface character. Comparison of surface character with bond failure has revealed probable failure mechanisms. It is demonstrated that mapping of surface prior to bonding can reveal areas that will have a predisposition to fail interfacially and how the mapping technique can be used as an non-destructive testing (NDT) tool for monitoring surfaces.

Filbey and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Factors influencing the durability of Titanium-6-4 / epoxy and Ti-6-4 / metal alkoxide / epoxy interphases were studied by first determining chemical and HYSICAL PROPERTIES OF Ti-6-4 adherend surfaces; second by characterizing the strength and durability of Ti-6-4 / epoxy bonds; and third by using aluminum and titanium alkoxides as possible adhesion promoters. Ti-6-4 adherend surfaces were oxidized either by chemical etch or anodization. Four principal pretreatments were studied: chromic acid anodization (CAA), sodium hydroxide anodization (SHA), phosphate fluoride acid etch (P/F), and TURCO basic etch (TURCO). The oxides were characterized physically by SEM, STEM, profilometry, and contact angles; and chemically by XPS, AES, SIMS, and indicator dyes. The two anodically produced oxides were porous, with pore diameters of 40 to 50 nm, while P/F and TURCO pretreated adherends showed no porosity. Good reproducibility of oxide composition was seen by XPS. The acidity/basicity of the surfaces was found to be in order of increasing basicity CAA

Book excerpt: Structural colors originate in the scattering of light from ordered microstructures, thin films, and even irregular arrays of electrically small particles, but they are not produced by pigments. Examples include the flashing sparks of colors in opals and the brilliant hues of some butterflies such as Morpho rhetenor. Structural colors can be implemented industrially to produce structurally colored paints, fabrics, cosmetics, and sensors.
