Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distributed processing has a strong theoretical foundation, but many day-to-day practitioners make limited use of the advantages this theory can give them. The result includes unreliable systems with obscure and intermittent failures, that can cost time, money and in extreme cases, lives. Reliable construction of distributed and concurrent systems must incorporate theory in practice. This book provides a concise presentation of the theory closely linked to the practical realization of these concepts. This highly practical presentation contains all the elements needed for a complete development of a distributed system. The book includes examples from C, Java and Eiffel, and sample code is available online.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every computer system is designed to perform a certain function or set of functions. The most accurate way to evaluate a system's performance is to measure the system under its real workload (Ref 32:19). Very often, though, it is not feasible or practical to measure an existing system (Ref 5:12). When the system to be analyzed is not available for direct analysis, a model of the system can serve as the subject of analysis. This investigation focuses on the use of a particular class of graph models, known as Evaluation-Nets, to model a distributed procesor computer system in support of a performance analysis effort.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The range of application areas to which distributed processing has been applied is limited. In order to extend this range, new models for organizing distributed systems must be developed. We present a new model, in which the distributed system is able to function effectively even though processing nodes have inconsistent and incomplete views of the data bases necessary for their computations. This model differs from conventional approaches in its emphasis on dealing with distribution-caused uncertainty and errors in control, data, and algorithm as an integral part of the network problem-solving process. We show how this new model can be applied to the problem of distributed interpretation. Experimental results with an actual interpretation system support these ideas. (Author).

Book excerpt: The Georgia Tech Research Program in Fully Distributed Processing Systems is a comprehensive investigation of data processing systems in which both the physical and logical components are extremely loosely coupled while operating with a high degree of control autonomy at the component level. The definition of the specific class of multiple computer systems being investigated, and the operational characteristics and features of those systems is motivated by the desire to advance the state-of-the-art for that class of systems that will deliver a high proportion of the benefits currently being claimed for distributed processing systems. The scope of individual topics being investigated under this program ranges from formal modeling and theoretical studies to empirical examinations of prototype systems and simulation models. Also included within the scope of the program are areas such as the utilization of FDPS's and their interaction with management operations and structure.

Book excerpt: An essential component of a Fully Distributed Processing System (FDPS) is the distributed and decentralized control. This component unifies the management of the resources of the FDPS and provides system transparency to the user. In a previous study, the problems of distributed and decentralized control were analyzed resulting in the specification of several control models. This study continues that work by further specifying the control models defined in the first report and comparing the performance of these models in various environments. This performance analysis is accomplished by means of simulation experiments. The results of the experiments indicate that the control message traffic generated by the distributed and decentralized control is much less than expected and probably does not present a barrier to the implementation of FDPSs. Comparison of the results of the simulation of a uniprocessor and that of an FDPS indicate that little or no loss of performance is experienced by the FDPS. An important limitation of these initial performance studies is the fact that user traffic is not included in this series of tests. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In modern distributed systems, such as the Internet of Things or cloud computing, verifying their correctness is an essential aspect. This requires modeling approaches that reflect the natural characteristics of such systems: the locality of their components, autonomy of their decisions, and their asynchronous communication. However, most of the available verifiers are unrealistic because one or more of these features are not reflected. Accordingly, in this book we present an original formalism: the Integrated Distributed Systems Model (IMDS), which defines a system as two sets (states and messages), and a relation of the "actions" between these sets. The server view and the traveling agent’s view of the system provide communication duality, while general temporal formulas for the IMDS allow automatic verification. The features that the model checks include: partial deadlock and partial termination, communication deadlock and resource deadlock. Automatic verification can support the rapid development of distributed systems. Further, on the basis of the IMDS, the Dedan tool for automatic verification of distributed systems has been developed.

Book excerpt: Concepts are investigated for an automated status and control system for a distributed processing environment. System characteristics, data requirements for health assessment, data acquisition methods, system diagnosis methods and control methods were investigated in an attempt to determine the high-level requirements for a system which can be used to assess the health of a distributed processing system and implement control procedures to maintain an accepted level of health for the system. A potential concept for automated status and control includes the use of expert system techniques to assess the health of the system, detect and diagnose faults, and initiate or recommend actions to correct the faults. Therefore, this research included the investigation of methods by which expert systems were developed for real-time environments and distributed systems. The focus is on the features required by real-time expert systems and the tools available to develop real-time expert systems.
