Four freshman student-athletes, competing in different sports, for different institutions, and within different conferences at the Division III level participated in the qualitative study; their parents served as informants. All interviews were transcribed verbatim, and four athlete-parent dyads were created based on head coach gender and student-athlete gender. Following phenomenological reduction and coding, taxonomic analysis was conducted to categorize head coach recruitment behaviors within and across all dyads. Common head coach behaviors were identified as: influence tactics, relationship development, and gateway tactics. Cross-dyad analysis revealed gender differences in specific head coach behaviors during the recruitment process. The methodology of the study encapsulated the recruitment experience from the student-athlete and the parent perspectives, providing practitioners with considerations for recruiting Generation Z student-athletes and researchers with a foundation to further explore gender differences in head coach recruitment behaviors in the future.

Book excerpt: Little to no research has been conducted examining the factors contributing to athletic department competitive success in NCAA Division III intercollegiate athletics. Several studies have linked student-athlete institutional choice factors to academic factors, while Division III student-athletes have indicated that both athletic and academic programs are important in their college choice (Goss, Jubenville, & Oregan, 2006; Konnert & Giese, 1987; National Collegiate Athletic Association, 2008; National Collegiate Athletic Association Research, 2011; National Collegiate Athletic Association Research, 2016). The NCAA Division III philosophy states that student-athletes should be integrated into the whole of the institution, not treated differently than non-student-athletes, and that admissions standards should be the same for student-athletes as they are for non-student-athletes (Stubbeman & Cooper, 2015). This research examined the relationship between institutional academic profile and athletic department competitive success. Academic profile was measured through institutional selectivity (acceptance rates), caliber of incoming students (ACT/SAT scores), four-year graduation rates, and retention rates (first to second year of enrollment). Athletic department competitive success was measured by the institution's placement in the Learfield Sports Directors Cup (LSDC). Spearman rank correlation was used to examine each independent variable against the institution's points earned in the LSDC. Positive relationships were found between each independent variable and points earned in the LSDC - ranging from -.306 to .563. These positive relationships present various implications and considerations for institutional administration and coaches to consider in recruiting student-athletes and setting expectations for competitive success.

Perna's (2006) Conceptual Model of College Choice was used as the conceptual framework for this study. Data was collected from prospective Division III student-athletes as they were engaged in their college search during their senior year of high school through individual interviews and a follow-up focus group conversation. The research led to four key findings: the students sought authentic interactions with the colleges that were recruiting them, the students received guidance and feedback from current coaches in their lives, academic offerings provided a foundation to the student college search, and parents were influential participants in each student's college search. If athletic and enrollment administrators can understand the process as a student experiences it while they are being recruited, they will have a more thorough understanding of how to connect the needs of each student with what the institution has to offer. With a better understanding of the process, recruiters can be more genuine with the information they provide and, hopefully, enroll students who are a good fit for the institution athletically and academically.

The challenges student-athletes face at the Division III (DIII) level and a lack of research raises curiosity regarding their career development. The purpose of this qualitative narrative study was to investigate female DIII student-athletes meaning-making regarding major selection using the Career Construction Interview (CCI) and the ways major choices are confirmed or challenged by their own defined life story. The participants of this study included 7 Caucasian traditional-age female student-athletes who exhibited strong athletic identities (utilizing the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale) attending a DIII institution located in the Midwest. Data were collected through semi-structured, open-ended interviews and the CCI, and analyzed using processes of restorying, life design counseling, and holistic-content analysis. The findings of this study indicate that telling, hearing, and retelling their stories were individually impactful and transformative. This study identified three themes across the narratives, which documented the influence of sports, minimal career support, and affirmation of their major decisions as shared experiences among the participants. Implications of the findings point to the need for intentionality surrounding career interventions in DIII post-secondary institutions for athletes and non-athletes. Results of this study revealed that even students with a chosen major can benefit from reflecting on their career stories. These results point to the opportunity to meet the career needs of student-athletes and the general student body with curriculum such as a constructivist career course designed around the CCI.
