Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dentistry Not a Specialty in Medicine: An Address Delivered Before the New England Dental Society at the Annual Meeting, Boston, October 7th, 1886 When I received the invitation from your committee to be present on this occasion, I said, involuntarily, from a force of habit-no. But the compliment paid me in the invitation, together with the flattering reception accorded me in Boston on a former occasion, made me hesitate in sending a negative reply. When I have something to say a little out of the ordinary prac tical and scientific talk of dental societies, I like to come to Boston with it. The old fancy that wisdom was born in the East and Spreads from that point of the compass, induces me to seek this locality and take advantage of the myth. As my professional audi ence, other than that now before me, lies to the west of us, my words may possibly gain a factitious importance by being delivered in Boston. I realize in advance that some things I am about to say will not be accepted, and are liable to be severely criticized. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Souvenir Seventeenth Anniversary of the First District Dental Society of the State of New York, December 9, 1885 Dr. Williams. Mr. President and Gentlemen: If I acknowledge the feeling of weakness which often prompts men to shrink from the consequences of placing themselves in a position where they are likely to be misunderstood or misinterpreted, I must also plead the extenuating circumstance that such feeling of weakness is born of past experiences, which have taught me that there are but few men who are Sincerely grateful to those who point out their errors of opinion or belief. This is especially true of those who enjoy some thing Of an intellectual reputation which may be founded, to a greater or less extent, upon such errors. Therefore, to criticise with perfect frankness Opinions which have become a matter of fixed intellectual pride is often regarded as an injudicious proceeding. There is too frequently evident in all critical efforts a quality which has regard chiefly for that artificial adaptation to environ ment known as expediency, - ah attempt to conceal more than is revealed, but Often to those who read between the lines revealing more than is concealed. It is the rare exception that discussions of questions of truth or error before scientific or professional associations are free from that exhibition of intellectual gymnastics which seeks by some trick of voice, or emphasis, or rhetoric, or what passes for logic, to win the applause of the moment. At the last, however, only the Simple truth remains, and we shall all probably come to see that this exists quite independently of our intentional or unintentional efforts to elucidate or obscure it. But if I correctly apprehend the purposes of those who are to take part in this discussion, the meeting is des tined to be a memorable one; and I trust that it may also prove a dignified exception to many former experiences in being animated by and conducted in that spirit of kind earnestness which Should actuate all fellow students and lovers of the truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address Delivered Before the American Society of Dental Surgeons, at the Opening of Its Fourth Annual Meeting, July 18th, 1843 The highest and most ardent ambition should be cherished by the dental profession in this country, redeeming the time, and putting each moment to its appropriate use as a part and parcel of the national character for useful science. Ten years ago, an accomplished dentist might have been pardoned for the thought that his art had arrived to perfection; but what astonishing dis coveries and improvements have been 'made in this department of surgery within that time And who shall say that the succeeding ten years may not be as pregnant with improvements as the past? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Education of Dentists in Distinction From Dental Education, Vol. 1: Address Delivered Before the Massachusetts Dental Society at Its Thirteenth Annual Meeting, December 13, 1877 Being elected your Orator, for this our Thirteenth Annual Meeting, I have chosen as a subject upon which to present a few thoughts, - 'c The Education of Dentists, in distinction from Dental Education. Much has been written within the last few years upon the subject of dental education, and brought. Before you in magazines and at the gatherings of dental societies, till the theme has become somewhat hackneyed. We have been disposed to boast of the progress that has been made, and to laud our work and our profession as the most beneficent that ever blessed mankind. As a profession, we have been rather too much disposed to sound our own praises, though the blast has not as yet been sufficiently powerful to attract much attention from the other professions, or from society around us. 'like the parvenu in society we are too sensitive in regard to our professional standing (or to the standing of our profession), and seek to command by self assertion what we fear society will not accord to our merits. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of The Fingerprint Sourcebook originated during a meeting in April 2002. Individuals representing the fingerprint, academic, and scientific communities met in Chicago, Illinois, for a day and a half to discuss the state of fingerprint identification with a view toward the challenges raised by Daubert issues. The meeting was a joint project between the International Association for Identification (IAI) and West Virginia University (WVU). One recommendation that came out of that meeting was a suggestion to create a sourcebook for friction ridge examiners, that is, a single source of researched information regarding the subject. This sourcebook would provide educational, training, and research information for the international scientific community.

This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Partial Transactions of the Northern Ohio Dental Association, 1857-1906 The great historian Macaulay said: "Sit at the feet of history, and through the night of years the steps of virtue she shall trace." We have been sitting at her feet, and tracing her steps in the interest of this association, and have concluded that there is no single chapter in the book of dentistry that is so interesting as the one on history. The writer has been trying to fulfill the wish of this association as expressed in a resolution passed in June 1905, appointing him a committee of one to compile its history. This was not an easy task, especially for the first fifteen years, because whatever records the association may have possessed entirely disappeared, and have not been located, notwithstanding at several times a committee was appointed to search for them, and also compile a history by obtaining information from any available source. Whatever we have learned has been from personal interviews, correspondence, research in journals and libraries. The formation of a society in this part of Ohio, came about, viz: The American Dental Convention in >855 passed a resolution recommending the organization of local societies, so W. H. Atkinson, J. A. Robinson, and others in Cleveland talked the matter over and concluded to issue a circular to the dentists of Northern Ohio, inviting them to meet in Tremont Hall, Nov. 3, 1857, and that was the time and place of the first meeting, and they have been held annually at different cities and towns almost without a lapse. On that memorable day in 1857, Geo. Watt appeared at Tremont Hall and helped organize the meeting, and made a report of the proceedings for the Dental Register of the West, of which he and J. Taft were editors. He came again at subsequent times and made reports for the same journal. We should honor his memory, because he did for us what nobody else did: he printed our early proceedings, and from the writers research he has no knowledge of anywhere else they can be found. Of the thirty-five dentists who were present at that epoch in the dental history of Ohio, only four are living, viz: Alfred Terry, Chester H. Harroun, Jere E. Robinson. W. P. Horton. In many respects this history is exact, while in others it may be lacking, owing to lapse of time and data. Your historian has done the best he could since June 1905, and his recompense has been the pleasure he has received from doing this kind of work, and his love for this Association and the profession.
