Book excerpt: This is an authoritative and accessible introduction to the study of vertebrate embryology. The book is structured around the development of three model organisms: the frog, chick, and mammal. Through a detailed analysis of the embryonic development of these animals, the author provides readers with a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles of embryology. The book is aimed at undergraduate students in the biological sciences, and will also be of interest to researchers and professionals in the field. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Vertebrate Embryology: Based on the Study of the Frog and the Chick This small volume is the result of a need that the author has felt, for some years, for a concise text-book of embryology that described the development of both the chick and the frog. The only other single book, with which the author is acquainted, that describes the development of both these commonly studied forms is the large volume of Marshall, which is too cumbersome and expensive for a general, class text-book. The present volume is intended as an outline, from which the student may learn the main facts about the embryology of the two animals in question; and the instructor is supposed in his lectures to enlarge upon this outline to any extent that he may see fit. Since the needs of the medical student have been largely considered in compiling the text, very little space has been given to theoretical discussions; these may be given by the instructor, at whatever length may seem desirable. Download or read book Living Embryos written by Jack Cohen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-20 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living Embryos: An Introduction to the Study of Animal Development covers the growth of an animal embryo, specifically the sequence developmental events of an egg. This book addresses the mammalian embryo as a homograph and demonstrates early vertebrate development mechanisms. Some of the topics covered in the book are the early embryology, development, and growth of the frog, mammals, chick, rabbit, arthropods, polychaetes, nematodes, molluscs, and tunicates. Other chapters deal with the formation of the nervous, muscular, and alimentary systems. These topics are followed by the analysis of the development of fishes. The discussion then shifts to the method of fertilization. The last chapters examine the formation of cleavage, cleavage geometry, embryonic membranes, and organization of the egg. The book can provide useful information to embryologists, biologists, students, and researchers.

Book excerpt: Living Embryos: An Introduction to the Study of Animal Development, Revised Second Edition presents the processes of development as seen throughout the animal kingdom. This book discusses the development of the organ systems of vertebrates. Comprised of 41 chapters, this edition starts with an overview of the history of the study of embryology, which is concerned with the process by which the adult arises from the fertilized egg. This text then discusses the role of the sperm in the determination of bilateral symmetry. Other chapters consider the development of the frog in order to give a basis for comparison with other species. This book discusses as well the structure of the hen's egg and illustrates the various stages of the development of the chick. The final chapter deals with animal evolution, which produces a wide variety of animal forms. Embryologists, zoologists, medical students, graduate students, university lecturers, and teachers will find this book extremely useful.

Book Synopsis Early Embryology of the Chick by : Bradley Merrill Patten
Download or read book Early Embryology of the Chick written by Bradley Merrill Patten and published by . This book was released on 1951 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fact that most courses in vertebrate embryology deal to a greater or lesser extent with the chick seems to warrant the treatment of its development in a book designed primarily for the beginning student. To a student beginning the study of embryology the very abundance of information available in the literature of the subject is confusing and discouraging. He is unable to cull the essentials and fit them together in their proper relationships and is likely to become hopelessly lost in a maze of details. This book was written in an effort to set forth for him in brief and simple form the early embryology of the chick. It does not purport to treat the subject from the comparative view point, nor to be a reference work. If it helps the student to grasp the structure of the embryos, and the sequence and significance of the processes he encounters in his work on the chick, and thereby conserves the time of the instructor for interpretation of the broader principles of embryology it will have served the purpose for which it was written.

Download or read book The Frog written by A. Milnes Marshall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Frog: An Introduction to Anatomy, Histology, and Embryology This little work is intended to supply the student with a practical guide to the study of elementary anatomy, histology, and embryology. For this purpose the frog is the animal chosen, as being easy to obtain, convenient to dissect, and a fairly typical example of the great group of vertebrate animals. Where, from its small size, or for other reasons, the frog has proved unsuitable, other animals have been substituted for it. For convenience of reference, and in order definitely to stamp the practical character of the work, directions for dissection, etc., have been printed in italics. In preparing this edition a few minor alterations have been made in the text, and a section on cell-division and the development of germ-cells has been added.
