Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Theory of Relativity The great question is, What is it all about? To this question some give one answer and some another; but none, to the writer's knowledge, give so clear an answer as Einstein himself, * and even he answersit by implication rather than directly. Still the implication of his definitions of the Special, or Restricted, and of the General principles is so plain that there is no mistaking it. His definition of the Restricted Principle, which need not be given here, as it is fully dealt with in the following pages, is a compendium of the special theory and it is easily generalized. His definition of the General Principle simply repeats the definition of the Restricted Prin ciple in wider terms, and he makes it quite clear thatelativity as a whole is Me wary of Me stato mom ofgonemlfi/zysz'oal laws informs common to all oosem/ers) It is something of a puzzle why other writers of authority have not given this fact a more prominent place and stated it plainly and explicitly. It may have been because it seemed so obvious as not to require emphasis, but to the writer's mind the greater part of the mystery which has sur rounded the subject has arisen through failure to grasp it. It was certainly so in his own case. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Relativity This introduction to the Theory of Relativity is based in part upon a course of lectures delivered in University College, London, 1912-13. The treatment, however, has been made much more systematical, and the subject matter has been extended very con siderably; but, throughout, the attempt has been made to confine the reader's attention to matters of prime importance. With this aim in view, many particular problems even of great interest have not been touched upon. On the other hand, it seemed advantageous to trace the connexion of the modern theory with the theories and ideas that preceded it. And the first three chapters, therefore, are devoted to the fundamental ideas of space and time underlying classical physics, and to the electromagnetic theories of Maxwell, hertz-heaviside and Lorentz, from the last of which Einstein's theory of relativity was directly derived. In the exposition of the theory itself free use has been made not only of the matrix method of representation employed by Minkowski, but even more of the language of quaternions. Very little indeed of these mathematical methods is required to follow the exposition, and this little is given in Chapter V., in a form which will be at once accessible to those acquainted with the elements of the ordinary vector algebra. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREFACE. THE Author of this very practical treatise on Scotch Loch - Fishing desires clearly that it may be of use to all who had it. He does not pretend to have written anything new, but to have attempted to put what he has to say in as readable a form as possible. Everything in the way of the history and habits of fish has been studiously avoided, and technicalities have been used as sparingly as possible. The writing of this book has afforded him pleasure in his leisure moments, and that pleasure would be much increased if he knew that the perusal of it would create any bond of sympathy between himself and the angling community in general. This section is interleaved with blank shects for the readers notes. The Author need hardly say that any suggestions addressed to the case of the publishers, will meet with consideration in a future edition. We do not pretend to write or enlarge upon a new subject. Much has been said and written-and well said and written too on the art of fishing but loch-fishing has been rather looked upon as a second-rate performance, and to dispel this idea is one of the objects for which this present treatise has been written. Far be it from us to say anything against fishing, lawfully practised in any form but many pent up in our large towns will bear us out when me say that, on the whole, a days loch-fishing is the most convenient. One great matter is, that the loch-fisher is depend- ent on nothing but enough wind to curl the water, -and on a large loch it is very seldom that a dead calm prevails all day, -and can make his arrangements for a day, weeks beforehand whereas the stream- fisher is dependent for a good take on the state of the water and however pleasant and easy it may be for one living near the banks of a good trout stream or river, it is quite another matter to arrange for a days river-fishing, if one is looking forward to a holiday at a date some weeks ahead. Providence may favour the expectant angler with a good day, and the water in order but experience has taught most of us that the good days are in the minority, and that, as is the case with our rapid running streams, -such as many of our northern streams are, -the water is either too large or too small, unless, as previously remarked, you live near at hand, and can catch it at its best. A common belief in regard to loch-fishing is, that the tyro and the experienced angler have nearly the same chance in fishing, -the one from the stern and the other from the bow of the same boat. Of all the absurd beliefs as to loch-fishing, this is one of the most absurd. Try it. Give the tyro either end of the boat he likes give him a cast of ally flies he may fancy, or even a cast similar to those which a crack may be using and if he catches one for every three the other has, he may consider himself very lucky. Of course there are lochs where the fish are not abundant, and a beginner may come across as many as an older fisher but we speak of lochs where there are fish to be caught, and where each has a fair chance. Again, it is said that the boatman has as much to do with catching trout in a loch as the angler. Well, we dont deny that. In an untried loch it is necessary to have the guidance of a good boatman but the same argument holds good as to stream-fishing...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work of a master, Relativity, the Special and the General Theory: A Popular Exposition, Volume One is Albert Einstein's own attempt to present his theories of relativity to non-physicists. The book is composed of three parts. Part one presents the Special Theory of Relativity and the intimate connection of space and time (spacetime, or "ST"). Part two highlights the General Theory of Relativity, in which Einstein argues that space and time are not absolute and are modified by gravitational forces. In part three, Einstein applies these theories to a consideration of the universe as a whole, with specific discussion about Newton's Law and a sketch of the structure of space according to the General Theory of Relativity. The book frequently refers to an analogy involving a man on a train and a man on and embankment, to which Einstein applies his theories to present varying outcomes. These analogies greatly enhance the layperson's understanding. Einstein's stated goal in Relativity, the Special and the General Theory was to "present the ideas in the simplest and most intelligible form," and in this regard he was largely successful. One does not need to have an understanding of the mathematical principles of theoretical physics in order to read this book. However, that is not to say this book is not a challenging read. The layman will likely find some of the passages quite dense, and the mathematical calculations that are presented may be difficult to follow. While this will not greatly impact one's surface level understanding of Einstein's theories, one's ability to fully grasp the theories presented will depend on their scientific and mathematical background. Relativity, the Special and the General Theory is highly recommended. It is an important work by one of the world's great thinkers, and it presents complex theories in an accessible manner. This book is a worthy addition to anybody's library. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most important feature in this book is the simple presentation with details of calculations. It is very easy to follow. Fairly sophisticated calculations are developed very rapidly. The presentation is logical and the detailed coverage makes this book very readable and useful. The contents develop Relativity as a modern theory of motion, starting by placing it in historical perspective and proceeding to show its logical necessity. The development of the Lorentz transformation is given using only one assumption rather than two. Right away in Chapter 3, geometry as required in Special Relativity for extension to General Relativity is introduced. This enables the use of the four-vector formalism of Minkowski. By the end of Chapter 4, the general Lorentz transformations for three-dimensional motion and their relation to four-dimensional boosts have already been explained. In Chapter 5 applications of relevance in Physics are provided. After a brief introduction to elementary electromagnetic theory, it is reformulated as a theory in four-dimensions using tensors in Chapter 6. Finally in Chapter 7, the theory is extended to deal with accelerated motion as “corrections” to Special Relativity.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of General Relativity and Gravitation Some of my readers will miss, perhaps, in this volume the enthusiastic tone which usually permeates the books and pamphlets that have been written on the subject (with a notable exception of Einstein's own writings). Yet the author is the last man to be blind to the admirable boldness and the severe architectonic beauty of Einstein's theory. But it has seemed that beauties of such a kind are rather enhanced than obscured by the adoption of a sober tone and an apparently cold form of presentation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the year 1900, most of physics seemed to be encompassed in the two great theories of Newtonian mechanics and Maxwell's theory of electromagnetism. Unfortunately, there were inconsistencies between the two theories that seemed irreconcilable. Although many physicists struggled with the problem, it took the genius of Einstein to see that the inconsistencies were concerned not merely with mechanics and electromagnetism, but with our most elementary ideas of space and time. In the special theory of relativity, Einstein resolved these difficulties and profoundly altered our conception of the physical universe. Readers looking for a concise, well-written explanation of one of the most important theories in modern physics need search no further than this lucid undergraduate-level text. Replete with examples that make it especially suitable for self-study, the book assumes only a knowledge of algebra. Topics include classical relativity and the relativity postulate, time dilation, the twin paradox, momentum and energy, particles of zero mass, electric and magnetic fields and forces, and more.
