Kind of guide-book for readers who are about to begin the study of Zoology. It aims at supplying a simple outline sketch of the animal kingdom, so as to enable the reader to map in, as it were, his own particular field of study in its right place in the general scheme of zoological know ledge. It is also intended to guide the reader to the use of standard works. A story has been told of a. Working man Who saved up money enough to buy an expensive work on natural history, and of his disappointment, when he found that much of it was obsolete and the whole of it old-fashioned. It is to prevent disappointments of this sort that this little book is intended. I have given a. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Zoology The many things that we encounter in our everyday life we soon learn to divide into two more or less sharply contrasted groups, the living and the non-living. This classification is a fundamental one, and when we come to the Sciences, that is, the ordered and intensive study of these things with a view to under standing them and explaining them, we find that they also fall into two corresponding fairly distinct categories, the Physical Sciences, treating of non-living things, and the Biological Sciences, concerned with living things. The two groups differ not only in their content, but, as the nature of this is dissimilar, the methods in which they can be investigated, that is to say, the technique, is also different in the two cases. Biology is the branch of science that treats Of living things in their manifold relations with one another and with non-living things. Living beings are generally recognised as being divided into Plants and Animals, and while, as a matter of fact, we find a certain amount of overlapping between the two when we study them in detail, this is a moderately clear cut division, to correspond with which Biology may be subdivided into Botany, the study of plants, and Zoology, the studv of animals. The present book is concerned with the latter, namely Zoology, or more accurately with some aspects of it as illustrated by certain type forms treated in an elementary manner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Zoology: A Guide to the Study of Animals; For the Use of Secondary Schools The aim of this book is first of all to lead young people to an acquaintance with the principal kinds of animals, especially as they are found in nature. Consequently little stress is laid on anatomy, although anatomy is, it is true, the basis of our present classification of animals. More stress is laid on the relation of organisms to environ ment - ec'ology or bionomics - and to man. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The present work is based chiefly upon the Introduction to the authors Manual of Zoology, much of which is given here in an unaltered form. A considerable portion, however, of the Introduction has been here recast, whilst fully two-thirds of the work consists of new matter. Illustrations also have been introduced wherever such appeared to be necessary. Many important subjects have, of course, been necessarily treated very superficially, or altogether omitted, as unsuitable for a merely elementary work. It is hoped, however, that most of those subjects are touched upon, a knowledge of which would be useful to the student of living or extinct forms of life, or to the general reader. Book excerpt: Excerpt from College Zoology This book is intended to serve as a text for beginning students in universities and colleges, or for students who have already taken a course in general biology and wish to gain a more com prehensive View of the animal kingdom. It differs from many of the college textbooks of zoology now on the market in several important respects: (1) the animals and their organs are not only described, but their functions are pointed out; (2) the ani mals described are in most cases native species; and (3) the relations of the animals to man are emphasized. Besides serv ing as a textbook, it is believed that this book will be of interest to the general reader, since it gives a bird's-eye View of the entire animal kingdom as we know it at the present time. Within the past decade there has been a tendency for teachers of zoology to pay less attention to morphology and more to physiology. As a prominent morphologist recently said. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zoology the Study of Animal Life The word zoology is derived from the Greek word zeon, which meant animal, and from the termination - logia, which signified a discourse. The name therefore, as might be ex pected, denotes the science of animals, and is therefore narrower in its scope than the science of biology, which deals with everything living and of which the science of zoology forms a subdivision. We see, therefore, that at the outset we are faced with two fundamental questions, viz. (1) What is life? And (2) What is an animal? To no two questions is it more difficult to give a precise answer than to these. If with Herbert Spencer we define life as the continuous adjustment of internal to external relations, who is the wiser, or who has any better conception of life as a result of the definition? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Zoology: A Book Devoted to Animals and Animal Life at the Cincinnati Zoological Garden Of course, in a book like this, it is not possible to be minutely descriptive, and so the author has aimed to tell as simply as possible what the attractions of the Gardens are and where they may be found, and gives a description, on a scientific basis, of the character and habits of many animals, birds and reptiles, with the hope that some thing may be found within the covers of the volume that will inspire more than one visitor to take up the careful study of Zoology - a branch of science one of the most useful because its study trains to habits of close observation and brings us near to nature's heart. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wonder of Life HE aim of this book is to illustrate the ever-growing wonder of animated Nature - with especial reference to animal life. It is an unconventional introduction to Natural History and Biology, taking broad views of the actual lives of living creatures and working inwards. It is therefore complementary to other books which begin with the minute analysis of the individual. The author hopes that it may be found useful in nature-study as a continuation of his Biology of the Seasons, and that teachers of Zoology may recommend it to their students as an introduction to the study of some of the problems for the discussion of which our crowded curricula leave little time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Zoology: With Directions for Practical Work (Invertebrates) IT is desirable, perhaps, to give some reason for adding another book on Natural History to the many that already exist, and to indicate in what way the book is intended to be used. The danger of the multiplication of small text - books is that they may conceivably be used in place of that firsthand investigation which must form the basis of all scientific work nevertheless, so long as the time allotted to Natural History is as limited as it is in the ordinary curriculum of school and college in this country, it is necessary to use to the best advantage the hours which teacher and pupils spend together, and I suggest that this time can at first be most profitably spent in practical work, during which the teacher directs and supplements the observations of the class, leading his pupils to reason about the facts they observe, and to record them by means of clear accurate drawings with brief explanatory notes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zoology: A Textbook for College and University Students After using much of the subject matter as a mimeographed text, the author prepared the manuscript in its final form, and during three summers has availed himself of the aid of many specialists at the Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole, Mass. Through the interest of various authorities who gave advance information about their work, certain chapters include material prior to the actual publication of the research discussed. Some of the most important features of the book are the logical arrangement of facts about the animals within a group, a statement of the chief characteristics at the beginning of the discussion, and a summary on the economic importance at the end of each section. The newer physiology has been introduced and a bibliography checked by experts in each field is given at the end of each chapter. Sources readily available have been selected and resumes chosen instead of the pioneer researches. Extensive discussions of Embry ology and Animal Behavior have been found undesirable since such studies cannot be comprehensively treated in an introductory course without excluding other fundamental subjects.
