Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Introduction to the Study of the Holy Scriptures The present volume is not an altogether new work. As stated in the title-page, it is an abridged edition of the larger volume on General Introduction which the present writer published a few years ago. Although this larger work was well received by the public, as proved by. The fact that its third edition is nearly exhausted, professors of Holy Scripture often expressed the wish that a shorter form of it could be issued. An abridged edition, it was argued, would enable students to cover more easily the ground of General Introduction within the short space of time at their disposal, while the unabridged work would prove to them a valuable book of reference, and continue to be useful to priests on the mission and to readers generally. It was also supposed that in its shorter form the General Introduction would be wel come as a text-book in colleges and other institutions where the larger work had but little chance to be adopted. It is for these and similar reasons that the present edition has been prepared. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Introduction to the Study of Holy Scripture: The Principles, Methods, History, and Results of Its Several Departments and of the Whole In 1883 the volume entitled Biblical Study, its Principles, Methods, and History, together with a Catalogue of Books of Reference was published. In the preface it was said: "This work is the product of the author's experience as a student of the Bible, and a teacher of theological students in Biblical Study. From time to time, during the past fourteen years, he has been called upon to give special attention to particular themes in public addresses and Review articles. In this way the ground of Biblical Study has been quite well covered. This scattered material has been gathered, and worked over into an organic system." The volume has been issued from the press nine times since that date, and there still seems to be a demand for it on the part of the public. The author has long felt the need of a more thorough revision of the volume, as the result of fifteen years' additional study; but he has been prevented by many hindrances from doing what he so greatly desired to do, until the present year. He has used his volume as a text-book in the Union Theological Seminary, New York, during all this period, and has gone over the whole subject afresh every year. This year being the twenty-fifth anniversary of his professorate, he felt impelled to undertake the task, and to make out of the volume a new one, which would cover the whole ground of the study of Holy Scripture, and the results of all that study during the past fifteen years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Critical Study and Knowledge of the Holy Scriptures, Vol. 4 The second portion of this volume consists of Introductions to the respective books of the New Testament. And here I am not author, but simply editor. Here I felt that I stood on very different ground from that which I had occupied with regard to the Textual portion of the volume. I had not so much to consider how I should have treated the subjects, as what addition might be needful, in consequence of modern research, to what the Rev. T. H. Home had him self stated. It was not for me to pull down one edifice in order to erect another in its stead; to do this for the mere sake of change, would be like removing an old manor house to make room for a trim Italian villa. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A General and Critical Introduction to the Study of Holy Scripture The works on Scriptural Introduction that we have in English are chiefly of protestant authors, and are inaccurate, filled with partisan hatred of Catholicity, and they have not kept pace with the progress of thought of this last half century. Thereupon, I conceived the design of writing my book, and it is the result of four years' unremitting toil. In this work, my aspirations have been very high. How far the achievement has come short of the aspirations, I leave to be decided by the judgment of the public. I have tried to write justly, not having in mind to advance any cause save the cause of truth. A chief feature of the present work is the arrangement of the traditional data favoring the deuterocanonical books in parallel columns with the scriptural passages therein quoted. This is the result of great labor, but I believe that the enhance ment of the evidential value of such data thus arranged repays such labor. Another feature of the work, which, I hope, will be grate ful to students, is the wide margins of the pages, which render it possible to write thereon things of special importance heard from the teacher. It would fill all my hopes of this present work to know that, in some degree, I had made the message of God more known and more loved.
