Book excerpt: There is currently in Madagascar a rich literary production (short stories, poetry, novels, plays) that has not yet reached the United States for lack of diffusion outside the country. Until recently, Madagascar suffered from political isolation resulting from its breakup with France in the 1970s and the eighteen years of Marxism that followed. With little hope that their voices would be heard outside the island, writers nevertheless have continued to express themselves in French (alongside a literature written in the Malagasy language). Malagasy literature in French had begun in the colonial era with three poets: Jean-Joseph Rabearivelo, Jacques Rabemananjara, and Flavien Ranaivo, all three presented in Léopold Senghor's celebrated Anthologie de la nouvelle poésie nègre et malgache (1948). More recently, although a few Malagasy writers living outside the country have been published in France, the bulk of Malagasy literature today has remained largely unpublished, circulating locally mostly in manuscript form. Voices from Madagascar will bring a wide selection of these texts, both in French and in English, to the North American public.

That they must not trust simply to what they can learn from books, or they will acquire but a stiff and bookish style of speaking. On the other hand, it is equally certain that if they are contented to pick up the language by ear only, though they may gain facility in speaking, they will lack accuracy and precision. Careful study of the grammar should go hand in hand with free intercourse with the natives. A beginner should give his main strength during the first year or two to the thorough mastery of the grammar. He should from the outset endeavour as far as possible to avoid forming sentences on English models; and especially should he direct his attention to those points in which the Malagasy language differs so much from his own; eg. In the absence of the logical copula and the consequent difference in the formation of sentences, the common use of the passive, the peculiarities of the relative form, the way in which the agent of an adjunctive verb is expressed, the uses of the particle no, delicate distinctions in the use or omission of the article, etc. If these and similar things are firmly grasped at the outset, a good foundation will exist on which to build. On the other hand, the failure to recognise some of these peculiar features of the language, may lead one to adopt awkward and erroneous modes of expression from which it may be extremely difficult to free one self in after years. Ibonia is the epic tale of the birth and exploits of a royal hero. His mother, a queen of heroic caliber, is barren until she consults a diviner, who brings about the hero's conception. An unusual birth and precocious strength prepare the hero to go in quest of his betrothed, who has been abducted. Such tests of worth as combat with a crocodile, supernatural aid, and a victorious struggle with her abductor prove him a true epic hero worthy of ruling his people. Haring's translation makes this Malagasy epic at last available to the general reader as well as to the scholar, also providing extensive notes and translating six shorter variants of the story."
