And this was done in spite of the fact that perhaps the greatest historian, all things considered, who has ever written in the English language, chose just this period for his theme. It is not improbable that the very title of Gibbon's great work may have done its part toward creating a false impression of the time he describes. If one comes to our period as a time of Decline and Fall merely, one can hardly fail to carry away from the study of it a depressing sense of gloom and wretchedness. Gibbon himself, great historian as he was, did not succeed in avoiding this danger. His splendid narrative is on the whole a mournful one. We feel ourselves to be dealing with the wild movements of men, either half brutal or wholly brutalized. We see a magnificent edifice crumbling to decay, but we are not impressed with the elements of life contained in this very process. But they have their defence: the "Oxford Manuals of English History" are intended to serve a particular purpose. There are several good general histories already in use, and there are a considerable number of scattered 'epochs' or 'periods'. But there seems still to be room for a set of books which shall combine the virtues of both these classes. Schools often wish to take up only a certain portion of the history of England, and find one of the large general histories too bulky for their use. On the other hand, if they employ one of the isolated 'epochs' to which allusion has been made, they find in most cases that there is no succeeding work on the same scale and lines from which the scholar can continue his study and pass on to the next period, without a break in the continuity of his knowledge. The object of the present series is to provide a set of historical manuals of a convenient size, and at a very moderate price. Each part is complete in itself, but as the volumes will be carefully fitted on to each other, so that the whole form together a single continuous history of England, it will be possible to use any two or more of them in successive terms or years at the option of the instructor. He was the author of seven books although History of the English People was arguably one of his finest. Although Green began his career as a clergyman, he was always an enthusiastic student of history. Ultimately he decided to change his chosen profession, quit the clergy and became the librarian at Lembeth. Writing history was always part of his plan and he began straightaway to bringing those plans to fruition. When he undertook the project that resulted in this book, he began with the thought in mind that there were not enough published and reputable materials about the history of England. "For the conquest of Britain by the English our authorities are scant and imperfect." Therefore, he took it upon himself to complete a comprehensive and well sourced document about English history. While completed later in his life, this book (along with his last of his books), were written during a period of ill health. Due to this, his wife, Alice Stopford, helped complete his writing when he was too ill to continue. That means that some of this book is written by her hand as well which makes it an interesting exploration of England and perhaps the first one written by both a man and a woman (although she is not given author credit). Only the reader can determine if Green was truly successful in his quest to achieve a complete work (with verifiable and strong sources) about the life and history of the English People. His work stands the test of time as a monument to the life and dedication of one man, relentless in his quest to pursue his dreams and ultimately make the world a better place. But while com bining in some degree the excellence of either, he possessed qualities in which both were utterly deficient; an indefatigable industry, a cool judgment, a command over others, a faculty of organization, a singular union Of patience and moderation with an imperious ambition, which marked him as a ruler Of men. He had besides a learning and skill in writing which no other of the Methodists possessed; he was older than any Of his colleagues at the start of the movement, and he out lived them all. His life indeed almost covers the century, and the Methodist body had passed through every phase of its history before he sank into the grave at the age Of eighty eight. It would have been impossible for Wesley to have wielded the power he did had he not shared the follies and extravagance as well as the enthusiasm of his disciples. Throughout his life his asceticism was that of a monk. At times he lived on bread only, and he Often slept on the bare boards. He lived in a world of wonders and divine interpositions. It was a miracle if the rain stopped and allowed him to set for ward on a journey. It was a judgment of Heaven if a hail storm burst over a town which had been deaf to his preach ing. One day, he tells us, when he was tired and his horse fell lame, I thought - cannot God heal either man or beast by any means or without any? - immediately my headache ceased and my horse's lameness in the same instant. With a still more childish fanaticism he guided his conduct, whether in ordinary events or in the great crises of his life, by draw ing lots or watching the particular texts at which his Bible Opened. But with all this extravagance and superstition, Wesley's mind was essentially practical, orderly, and conserv' ative.
