Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Creeds When the Introductions to Old and New Testament History in the series of Elementary Theological Class-Books, which have since had such a wide circulation, were originally projected, it was suggested to the Publishers that they should follow them up with similar Introductions to the Church Catechism, the Prayer-Book, the Creeds, the Articles, and the History of the Church during the first three Centuries, and so make a somewhat complete course. This has already been partially done, and the Introductions to the Church Catechism and the Prayer-Book have for some time been in extensive use. The present Volume forms an Introduction to the Creeds, and it is hoped it will supply a want, which has been often expressed by many teachers at our Theological Colleges in England and those engaged in various Missions abroad. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Creeds: And to the Te Deum The following Introduction to the Creeds and to the Early History of the Te Deum has been designed, in the first instance, for the use of students reading for the Cambridge Theological Tripos. I have edited all the Creed-forms set for that examination, with the exception of three lengthy formularies, which belong rather to a history of doctrine than to my present subject. These are - the letter of Cyril to Nestorius, the letter of Leo to Flavian, and the Definition of the Council of Chalcedon. At the same time, I hope that the book may be useful to a wider circle of readers - to clergy and candidates for Holy Orders. The subject is of supreme importance to all teachers of Church doctrine; and the only excuse for adding to the number of books which already deal with it, is the desire to enable others to gather the first-fruits of many writers and of recent researches in England and abroad. During the past three years I have had the privilege, with the aid of the Managers of the Hort Memorial Fund at Cambridge, of visiting many libraries to collate MSS., and have endeavoured to make good use of the opportunities so kindly offered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Church Creeds The object of the present article is to discuss, as briefly as may be, the above-named subject, which, to bring the whole idea at once before the mind, may be stated in the following form: Church Creeds or Confessions of Faith, their History and Value, and their proper Limits for Use in the Public Recep tion of Believers into the Church. This subject has troubled not. A few of the pastors of our churches. Each separate church often has its separate creed and it seems to many as if order could be brought out of this confusion, only, either by the rejection of all local creeds, or by the adoption of a uniform standard in all our churches. Such treatises have their place and value, but they present our system, and only the anti-arminian part of it at that, in its bones. They furnish no adequate con ception of that divinely vital and exuber ant Calvinism, the creator of the modern world, the mother of heroes, saints and martyrs in number without number, which history, judging the tree by its fruits, crowns as the greatest creed of Christen dom. This historic faith of the Presbyterian Church'has in recent years been assailed with the most searching criticism, the most merciless caricature, the most vivid and eloquent abuse. That in this and every other conflict it will come off more-than conqueror, we have no shadow of doubt. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Three Creeds The object of the Oxford Library of Practical Theology is to supply some carefully considered teaching on matters of Religion to that large body of devout laymen, who desire instruction, but are not attracted by the learned treatises which appeal to the theologian. One Of the needs of the time would seem to be, to translate the solid theological learning, of which there is no lack, into the ver nacular of everyday practical religion; and while steering a course between' what is called plain teaching on the one hand and erudition on the other, to supply some sound and readable instruc tion to those who require it, on the subjects in cluded under the common title The Christian Religion, ' that they may be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh them a reason of the hope that is in them, with meekness and fear. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip Schaff's The Creeds of Christendom is a massive set, originally published in three volumes and here reproduced across five volumes, cataloging and explaining the many different creeds from the myriad Christian denominations. The differences in belief between Calvinists, Lutherans, and Presbyterians, for example, can often be subtle, so a thorough examination of the particulars as well as an explanation for how those different beliefs result in a different worldview is necessary. Volume One: Part I covers: . creeds in general . the Ecumenical creeds . the creeds of the Greek Church . the creeds of the Roman Church . the creeds of the Evangelical Churches . the creeds of the Evangelical Lutheran Churches . the creeds of the Evangelical Reformed Churches. This volume contains the table of contents for all of Volume One. Swiss theologian PHILIP SCHAFF (1819-1893) was educated in Germany and eventually came to the United States to teach at the German Reformed Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania. He wrote a number of books and hymnals for children, including History of the Christian Church and The Creeds of the Evangelical Protestant Churches.
