Book excerpt: "This classic text, originally published in 1967, is here reissued to coincide with the 800th anniversary of the City of Liverpool. Art in a City was a milestone in the examination of urban arts movements and also provides the starting point for looking at art in Liverpool from the 1960s to the present day and beyond." "Commissioned by the Bluecoat Society of Arts, John Willett surveyed the history of the visual arts in the city, looked at the cultural and institutional environment in which they developed, and asked the people of Liverpool how they viewed the visual arts in the city - both in terms of public art and art in enclosed spaces. This had never before been done far a single city, and arguably has never been done since, Willett saw a place with strong traditions in the visual arts, with new developments associated with the city's emergence in the 1960s as a centre for music and poetry." "His book concluded with an agenda for the development of art in Liverpool, and the spirit of this imbued much of the Bluecoat's work in the decades following publication. It is appropriate that Art in a City is being republished, with a new introduction by Bryan Biggs. Artistic Director of the Bluecoat, as Liverpool prepares for its year as European Capital of Culture in 2008, when the spotlight will again be on the city and how the arts can meaningfully engage with society."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book accompanies the first exhibition entirely of Jamaican art to take place in the north-west of the UK. The exhibition, Jamaica Making: The Theresa Roberts Art Collection, is sited at the Victoria Gallery and Museum, Liverpool in 2022, and is a comprehensive presentation of the best of Jamaican art since the 1960s. The Theresa Roberts Art Collection is the private collection of Theresa Roberts, a Jamaican-born businesswoman and philanthropist, who has made the UK her home. This collection offers an important insight into the development of Jamaican art since the country gained independence in 1962. Indeed, the exhibition also acts to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Jamaican independence in 2022. Included in the book are the following: an official welcome from the Prime Minister of Jamaica; an essay by the collector, exhibition donor and philanthropist, Theresa Roberts; an introduction by eminent British-Jamaican art historian, Edward Lucie-Smith; essays by Emma Roberts, the exhibition curator (Liverpool John Moores University), Davinia Gregory-Kameka, writer, educator and researcher (Columbia University, USA) and Sireita Mullings, arts practitioner and visual sociologist (University of Bedfordshire). The final section of the book is the full visual catalogue of the Jamaica Making exhibition – a unique record of this historic exhibition. An Open Access edition of this book is available on the Liverpool University Press website and the OAPEN library.

Published by the University of Liverpool Department of Art Collections in Autumn 1997, it is now also available from Liverpool University Press. Halliday is still remembered as a portrait painter, but he also worked successfully as a muralist, public speaker on art and design issues and as a radio and television broadcaster. All these aspects of Edward Halliday’s career are reviewed in the exhibition and catalogue Edward Halliday: Art for Life 1925–39 with a view to restoring a reputation that is richly deserved.

Book excerpt: Merseyside has one of the richest public collections of art in provincial Britain, much of it originally assembled in nineteenth-century private collections and then donated to public institutions by the owners. The essays in this booklet discuss four of the nineteenth-century collectors, men whose tastes in pictorial art ranged from old masters to the Pre-Raphaelites. One of the four also collected, on a large scale, ceramics and other decorative artifacts. These individuals commissioned the work of local artists, to encourage and support them. They also founded societies and institutions, partly in order to display their collections and thus educate the local public. The riches of the art they brought into Liverpool or their support generated in the locality was, inevitably, an expression of their personal wealth - riches in art indeed. But these particular individuals were more than merely avid collectors of lofty patrons. They held clear views about the social and moral value of art and about its contemporary "progress", views expressed implicitly in their collections and in two instances also in public statements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the phenomenally successful new Tate Modern to the DIA: Beacon and Liverpool Biennial, contemporary visual art seems more than ever enmeshed in prominent public institutions and new forms of patronage, whether public commissions or corporate sponsorships. In Art, Money, Parties, renowned figures from the art world--including artists, dealers, and gallery owners--join scholars to consider these new institutional faces of contemporary art, their influence on art and artists, and how they affect the future of art. The essays in this collection, which originated at a conference organized by Tate Liverpool and the University of Liverpool, offer frequently contentious positions on the role of new institutions and patronage in the world of contemporary art. For example, while Liverpool Biennial director Lewis Biggs delivers a fairly optimistic assessment of the state of contemporary art, scholar Paul Usherwood unleashes a scathing critique of recent public art commissions. From opposing perspectives, gallery owner Sadie Coles reviews the history of her own involvement in the art world during the 1990s, and artist Stewart Home offers a sharply contrasting view of the value of the art produced in that decade. Rather than an attempt to craft a consensus, though, Art, Money, Parties is instead an effort to map out the position of--and possibilities for--contemporary art in a period of growing public sponsorship and attention. The vibrant, growing interest in contemporary art--evidenced by the success of the institutions under consideration--makes Art, Money, Parties a timely and indispensable contribution to any debate on the present and future of art.

Book excerpt: This classic text, reissued to coincide with the 800th anniversary of the City of Liverpool, was originally published in 1967. It is a milestone in the examination of urban arts movements and also provides the starting point for looking at art in Liverpool from the 1960s to the present day and beyond. Based on a survey commissioned by the Bluecoat Society of Arts, the author did something that had never before been done for a single city, and arguably has never been done since. He surveyed the history of the visual arts in the city, looked at the cultural and institutional environment in which they developed, and asked the people of Liverpool how they viewed the visual arts in Liverpool - both in terms of public art and art in enclosed spaces. Willett saw a place with strong traditions in the visual arts, with new developments associated with the city's emergence in the 1960s as a centre for music and poetry. Willett concluded with an agenda for the development of art in Liverpool, and the spirit of this imbued much of the Bluecoat's work in the decades following publication. Revised with a new introduction Art in a City is a marker for the history of the visual arts in Liverpool.
