Its primary Object is, as was the case in the lecture room, that of explaining with all the clearness at my command the leading principles of invariant algebra, in the hope of making it evident to the junior student that the subject is attractive as well as important, and that its early difficulties are only such as he can readily surmount. Lucidity in mathematical works has often suffered from undue compression. My constant aim has been to guard against such a possibility here. In a book of moderate size dealing with a great subject much must remain unsaid, if the fundamental considerations are to be presented with the thoroughness and the perspicuity necessary to enable the student adequately to realize them, and give him the interest in them which will prepare him to pursue for himself the study to which they introduce him. But it is no great abuse of language to give, in a special sense, the name "Modern Higher Algebra" to that which forms the principal subject of this volume - the Theory of Linear Transformations. Since Mr. Cayley's discovery of Invariants, quite a new department of Algebra has been created; and there is no part of Mathematics in which an able mathematician, who had turned his attention to other subjects some twenty years ago, would find more difficulty in reading a memoir of the present day, and would more feel the want of an elementary guide to inform him of the meaning of the terms employed, and to establish the truth of the theorems assumed to be known. With respect to the use of new words I have tried to steer a middle course. In this part of Algebra combinations of ideas require to be frequently spoken of which were not of important use in the older Algebra. This has made it necessary to employ some new words, in order to avoid an intolerable amount of circumlocution. But feeling that every strange term makes the science more repulsive to a beginner, I have generally preferred the use of a periphrasis to the introduction of a new word which I was not likely often to have occasion to employ. Book excerpt: Julius Petersen's paper, Die Theorie der regulären graphs in Acta Mathematica, volume 15 (1891), stands at the beginning of graph theory as we know it today. The Danish group of graph theorists decided in 1985 to mark the 150th birthday of Petersen in 1989, as well as the centennial of his paper. It was felt that the occasion called for a presentation of Petersen's famous paper in its historical context and, in a wider sense, of Petersen's life and work as a whole. However, the readily available information about Julius Petersen amounted to very little (not even a full bibliography existed) and virtually nothing was known about the circumstances that led him to write his famous paper. The study of Petersen's life and work has resulted in several papers, in particular a biography, a bibliography, an annotated edition of the letters surrounding Petersen's paper of 1891, an analysis of Petersen's paper and an annotated edition of parts of Petersen's correspondence with Sylow on Galois theory. The first four of these papers, together with a survey of matching theory, form the first part of this book. In addition to these five special papers, there are papers submitted in the celebration of the Petersen centennial.
