Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream T remains to be seen, whether the labours of former commentators have, as some imagine, exhausted all that proper and useful annotation on the works of Shakespeare, which the lapse Of two centuries, and the continual change in our language and manners, have rendered necessary. We shall not here pause to consider those, if any there be, who despise even the most minute illustration of the works of our great dramatist. The merits of those works are beyond the reach of criticism, in the common acceptation of the term, and an unanimous voice has pronounced every thing relating to them and their author, hallowed and sacred. The judg ment of time has classed them amongst the noblest productions of human genius, and nothing now re mains for us, but to hail them as the immortal pro geny Of an immortal author. They are full, and so far as they have a common spirit it is a spirit of inquiry. No question of history or criticism has been treated dogmatically when it could be treated otherwise. There is indeed no part of literary history where dogma is less in place. It is impossible for any editor of Shakespeare to write a preface without remembering his debts. There are parts of these Introductions where I am conscious of no obligation, but wherever scholarship or learning or interpretation was needed I have found my best guides in the eighteenth-century editors, in Dr. Aldis Wright, and in the Oxford Dictionary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's Comedy of a Midsummer Night's Dream I have also omitted most of the Critical Com ments from the introduction, as the books from which they were taken are now to be found in public and school libraries. For these extracts I have sub stituted familiar comments of my own, and have added more of the same kind in the Appendix. A concise account of Shakespeare's metre has also been inserted as an introduction to the Notes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Midsummer Night's Dream IN this edition of shakespeare an attempt is made to present the greater plays of the dramatist in their literary aspect, and not merely as material for the study of philology or grammar. Criticism purely verbal and textual has only been included to such an extent as may serve to help the student in the appreciation of the essential poetry. Questions of date and literary history have been fully dealt with in the Introductions, but the larger space has been devoted to the interpretative rather than the matter-of-fact order of scholar ship. Aesthetic judgments are never final, but the Editors have attempted to suggest points of view from which the analysis of dramatic motive and dramatic character may be profitably undertaken. In the Notes likewise, while it is hoped that all unfamiliar expressions and allusions have been adequately explained, yet it has been thought even more important to consider the dramatic value of each scene, and the part which it plays in relation to the whole. These general principles are common to the whole series in detail each Editor is alone responsible for the play or plays that have been intrusted to him. Every volume of the series has been provided with a Glossary, an Essay upon Metre, and an Index; and Appen dices have been added upon points of special interest, which could not conveniently be treated in the Introduction or the Notes. The text is based by the several Editors on that of the Globe edition: the only omissions made are those that are unavoidable in an edition likely to be used by young students. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Midsummer-Night's Dream: Edited, With Introduction, Notes, Glossary, and Index In arrangement the volume closely resembles my edi tions of Paradise Lost, though its general character is more elementary. My aim has been to make the Notes tolerably simple and for the most part brief. They explain rather than illustrate by parallel passages, and little space is devoted to textual matters, of which the young student seldom makes anything. To relieve and simplify the ivotes, and partly also that this aspect of Shakespeare may be studied separ ately from the text, the philological matter has been placed almost entirely in the Glossary. It will be observed that the Introduction and Notes contain a certain amount of literary criticism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream: The Second Quarto, 1600; A Fac-Simile in Photo-Lithography In his Introduction prefixed to the photo-lithograph of Fisher's Quarto, the present writer has attempted to show the probable date of A Midsummer [veg/zl's Dream to have been not earlier than I 593, or later than 1596. It cannot possibly have been produced later than August, 1598 (judging from the mention of it by Meres); although the entry of Fisher's Quarto in the Registers is not until the 8th of October, 1600.
