Book Synopsis Finite Frame Theory: A Complete Introduction to Overcompleteness by : Kasso A. Okoudjou
Download or read book Finite Frame Theory: A Complete Introduction to Overcompleteness written by Kasso A. Okoudjou and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2016-07-13 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frames are overcomplete sets of vectors that can be used to stably and faithfully decompose and reconstruct vectors in the underlying vector space. Frame theory stands at the intersection of many areas in mathematics such as functional and harmonic analysis, numerical analysis, matrix theory, numerical linear algebra, algebraic and differential geometry, probability, statistics, and convex geometry. At the same time its applications in engineering, medicine, computer science, and quantum computing are motivating new research problems in applied and pure mathematics. This volume is based on lectures delivered at the 2015 AMS Short Course “Finite Frame Theory: A Complete Introduction to Overcompleteness”, held January 8–9, 2015 in San Antonio, TX. Mostly written in a tutorial style, the seven chapters contained in this volume survey recent advances in the theory and applications of finite frames. In particular, it presents state-of-the-art results on foundational frame problems, and on the analysis and design of various frames, mostly motivated by specific applications. Carefully assembled, the volume quickly introduces the non-expert to the basic tools and techniques of frame theory. It then moves to develop many recent results in the area and presents some important applications. As such, the volume is designed for a diverse audience including researchers in applied and computational harmonic analysis, as well as engineers and graduate students.

Book Synopsis New Perspectives on Approximation and Sampling Theory by : Ahmed I. Zayed
Download or read book New Perspectives on Approximation and Sampling Theory written by Ahmed I. Zayed and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-03 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Butzer, who is considered the academic father and grandfather of many prominent mathematicians, has established one of the best schools in approximation and sampling theory in the world. He is one of the leading figures in approximation, sampling theory, and harmonic analysis. Although on April 15, 2013, Paul Butzer turned 85 years old, remarkably, he is still an active research mathematician. In celebration of Paul Butzer’s 85th birthday, New Perspectives on Approximation and Sampling Theory is a collection of invited chapters on approximation, sampling, and harmonic analysis written by students, friends, colleagues, and prominent active mathematicians. Topics covered include approximation methods using wavelets, multi-scale analysis, frames, and special functions. New Perspectives on Approximation and Sampling Theory requires basic knowledge of mathematical analysis, but efforts were made to keep the exposition clear and the chapters self-contained. This volume will appeal to researchers and graduate students in mathematics, applied mathematics and engineering, in particular, engineers working in signal and image processing.
Download or read book Wavelets written by Amir-Homayoon Najmi and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2012-04-15 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduced nearly three decades ago as a variable resolution alternative to the Fourier transform, a wavelet is a short oscillatory waveform for analysis of transients. The discrete wavelet transform has remarkable multi-resolution and energy-compaction properties. Amir-Homayoon Najmi’s introduction to wavelet theory explains this mathematical concept clearly and succinctly. Wavelets are used in processing digital signals and imagery from myriad sources. They form the backbone of the JPEG2000 compression standard, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation uses biorthogonal wavelets to compress and store its vast database of fingerprints. Najmi provides the mathematics that demonstrate how wavelets work, describes how to construct them, and discusses their importance as a tool to investigate and process signals and imagery. He reviews key concepts such as frames, localizing transforms, orthogonal and biorthogonal bases, and multi-resolution. His examples include the Haar, the Shannon, and the Daubechies families of orthogonal and biorthogonal wavelets. Our capacity and need for collecting and transmitting digital data is increasing at an astonishing rate. So too is the importance of wavelets to anyone working with and analyzing digital data. Najmi’s primer will be an indispensable resource for those in computer science, the physical sciences, applied mathematics, and engineering who wish to obtain an in-depth understanding and working knowledge of this fascinating and evolving field.
