Combining features of a reference work, bibliographic guide, and literary history, it records the output of almost 400 authors who wrote both in Armenia and in the communities of the Armenian diaspora. Presents a general history of the literature, with chapters devoted to a single century and prefaced by information on the era's social, cultural, and religious milieus; followed by a section of biobibliographical entries for Armenian authors, a section of bibliographies and reference works, and a listing of anthologies of literature both in Armenian and in translation. Includes references to earlier authors and to sources of influence, both Armenian and non-Armenian. A final section contains bibliographies devoted to particular genres and periods, such as minstrels, folklore, and prosody. A thematic discussion of the works of more than 150 poets, historians, monks, and others highlights the themes that captured the imagination of Armenian authors.--From publisher description.

Book excerpt: ""The Book of Sadness" is the principal literary masterpiece of the great Armenian writer St. Grigor Narekatsi (951-1003). Throughout the centuries it has been revered as sanctity. The wonder-working strength of "The Book of Sadness" is featured in multiple legends and traditions. Being a masterpiece of Medieval Christian writing, this book has been largely unknown to the Christian world because it is written in Old Armenian which is presently familiar only to a restricted number of scholars. Consisting of eleven thousand poetic lines arranged in 95 chapters, the book is an appeal to God by a mortal asking for forgiveness to his sins. St. Grigor Narekatsi assumes upon himself all the sins committed by mankind. There is hardly another text enumerating the human sins in more detail. ... The text contains allusions and references to the Bible in almost every line, in fact it serves as an illustration of the at-oneness of the Bible and a Christian's life. The reader finds himself in a situation where his soul and the truths and events of the Bible are closely intertwined, he eventually perceives the Holy Book as a room for his own existence rather than as a story to read. ... Throughout the centuries this book enjoyed a reputation of a universal healer. It has been believed that a person will be cured of all ailments by its mere possession. This quality of the book is many times mentioned by the author. The book is an extremely powerful proof of God's existence, the mere acquaintance with its contents will convert thousands of people into genuine faith and repentance. The book has been translated into different languages, however this is the first ever complete English translation."--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a 3000 year history of one of Europe's most fascinating and important peoples. Situated on the south-east coast of the Black Sea, Armenia has been a pivotal point between the forces of the east and of the west over most of its long history. That history has thus been very largely one of conquest by rival empires. In the classical period Armenia was conquered successively by the Persians, Seleucids and the Greeks (under Alexander). The flourishing of an independent and powerful Armenian society in the last three centuries before Christ was dissipated by successive invasions of Romans, Parthians and Persians. The conversion of Armenia to Christianity in AD 301 was the prelude to conquests first by Byzantium and then by the Arabs. The dissipation of Armenian culture continued through many centuries of subjugation under the Ottoman Empire and more recently as part of the Soviet Empire. Perhaps not surprisingly emigration from their troubled homeland has been a popular option among Armenians for at least the last 1,500 years. Armenian culture, as the author shows, has survived in enclaves throughout Europe, the Middle East and the United States. The book closes with a consideration of Armenia's first experience of independence after a gap of 1000 years. Redgate's vivid, analytical narrative is illustrated with numerous photographs and maps.

It covers not only the normative tradition but, more importantly, also describes the colloquial language as it is used in Armenia today. With regard to methodological approach and terminology it fully meets the demands of modern general linguistics and typology. This grammar will be of interest not only to the specialised readership of descriptive and comparative linguists, of typologists and of armenologists, but to all those who would like to acquaint themselves with linguistic data from living Armenian. It will also be of use to students wishing to learn Modern Eastern Armenian and to lecturers in Modern Eastern Armenian language courses.

This book was released on 1982 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a fully annotated translation of an Armenian literary classic, the first made from the critical Armenian text. The sixth-century History of Vardan and the Armenian War describes a revolt of Armenians against the shah of Sasanian Iran in 450-451 in protest against the persecution of Christianity. Elishē uses this occasion to express in more general terms his attitude as a Christian Armenian to the problems of cultural survival and patriotism in a hostile environment. His history profoundly influenced Armenian writers from classical times to the present; its hero, Vardan, remains the ideal figure of a patriot even in Soviet Armenia. Mr. Thomson's introduction places the work in its historical context, while extensive notes identify people and places, explain allusions, and clarify details of the account.

Book excerpt: The papers in this volume derive from the conference on textile terminology held in June 2014 at the University of Copenhagen. Around 50 experts from the fields of Ancient History, Indo-European Studies, Semitic Philology, Assyriology, Classical Archaeology, and Terminology from twelve different countries came together at the Centre for Textile Research, to discuss textile terminology, semantic fields of clothing and technology, loan words, and developments of textile terms in Antiquity. They exchanged ideas, research results, and presented various views and methods. This volume contains 35 chapters, divided into five sections: - Textile terminologies across the ancient Near East and the Southern Levant - Textile terminologies in Europe and Egypt - Textile terminologies in metaphorical language and poetry - Textile terminologies: examples from China and Japan - Technical terms of textiles and textile tools and methodologies of classifications
