Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Intermediate Logic This book is based upon the Manual of Logic of which the last edition was first published fifteen years ago. Since that time the need has arisen for a simpler and briefer treatment adapted to the intermediate university examinations to which Logic has been transferred from the final degree examinations. Moreover, controversy on the more modern parts of logical doctrine has had its legitimate outcome in a general agreement among thinkers on the subject. We are glad, in consequence, to be able to adopt a less controversial tone than was deemed advisable in the presentation of induction in the former work. Especially in the material logic of method and of induction, then, a new version was desirable, and the opportunity was seized for a thorough revision of the treatment of the long accepted doctrines of formal logic, and for some important re-arrangement of topics. In particular we believe that much is gained by placing the treatment of 'Method' in such a position that the old doctrine of the syllogism is seen still to be an essential part of logical theory, and not merely an archaeological monument of the perverted ingenuity of our forefathers. We have also deemed it convenient to our readers to treat of the various forms of fallacy in immediate connexion with those parts of logical doctrine against which they offend. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formal logic provides us with a powerful set of techniques for criticizing some arguments and showing others to be valid. These techniques are relevant to all of us with an interest in being skilful and accurate reasoners. In this highly accessible book, Peter Smith presents a guide to the fundamental aims and basic elements of formal logic. He introduces the reader to the languages of propositional and predicate logic, and then develops formal systems for evaluating arguments translated into these languages, concentrating on the easily comprehensible 'tree' method. His discussion is richly illustrated with worked examples and exercises. A distinctive feature is that, alongside the formal work, there is illuminating philosophical commentary. This book will make an ideal text for a first logic course, and will provide a firm basis for further work in formal and philosophical logic.

Book excerpt: Studying formal logic can be intimidating without the right help, but knowing how to think logically isn't just for "experts." Logic should be your secret weapon. It's the tool for learning how to use other tools. It's the bones that give a clenched fist its structure (and knuckles). With that in mind, we have painstakingly designed Intermediate Logic for everyday students, teachers, and parents who've never used truth tables or formal proofs of validity to work with syllogisms, but who know just how important and applicable learning logic is. In Intermediate Logic, you'll get the benefit of Jim Nance's twenty years of experience to help you master propositional arguments. Brand new, clean, easy-to-read layout, lots of margin notes for key points and further study, a step-by-step modern method, and exercises for every lesson (plus review questions and review exercises for every unit) all make Intermediate Logic the perfect choice for a logic course.

Book excerpt: Intermediate Logic fills a serious gap in the range of university logic texts by offering a clear, reliable, general guide for students taking a second course in logic after completing a basic introduction. It will serve as an ideal follow-up to any of the standard introductory texts, and will give excellent preparation for advanced work in logical theory or applications of logic in philosophy, mathematics, or computing theory. - ;Intermediate Logic is an ideal text for anyone who has taken a first course in logic and is progressing to further study. It examines logical theory, rather than the applications of logic, and does not assume any specific technological grounding. The author introduces and explains each concept and term, ensuring that readers have a firm foundation for study. He provides a broad, deep understanding of logic by adopting and comparing a variety of different methods and approaches. In the first section, Bostock covers such fundamental notions as truth, validity, entailment, quantification, and decision procedures. Part two lays out a definitive introduction to four key logical tools or procedures: semantic tableaux, axiomatic proofs, natural deduction, and sequent calculi. The final section opens up new areas of existence and identity, concluding by moving from orthodox logic to examination of `free logic'. Intermediate Logic provides an ideal secondary course in logic for university students, and a bridge to advanced study of such subjects as model theory, proof theory, and other specialized areas of mathematical logic. -

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Algebra of Logic The primary significance of a symbolic calculus seems to lie in the economy of mental effort which it brings about, and to this is due the characteristic power and rapid development of mathematical knowledge. Attempts to treat the operations of formal logic in an analogous way had been made not in frequently by some of the more philosophical mathematicians, such as leibniz and lambert; but their labors remained little known, and it was boole and DE morgan, about the middle of the nineteenth century, to whom a mathematical - though of course non-quantitative - way of regarding logic was due. By this, not only was the traditional or Aristotelian doctrine of logic reformed and completed, but out of it has developed, in course of time, an instrument which deals in a sure manner with the task of investigating the fundamental concepts of mathematics - a task which philosophers have repeatedly taken in hand, and in which they have as repeatedly failed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revised and considerably expanded 2nd edition brings together a wide range of topics, including modal, tense, conditional, intuitionist, many-valued, paraconsistent, relevant, and fuzzy logics. Part 1, on propositional logic, is the old Introduction, but contains much new material. Part 2 is entirely new, and covers quantification and identity for all the logics in Part 1. The material is unified by the underlying theme of world semantics. All of the topics are explained clearly using devices such as tableau proofs, and their relation to current philosophical issues and debates are discussed. Students with a basic understanding of classical logic will find this book an invaluable introduction to an area that has become of central importance in both logic and philosophy. It will also interest people working in mathematics and computer science who wish to know about the area.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introductory Logic The present\edition represents a somewhat thorough revision of this book, which had remained substantially unchanged since its first publication, eleven years ago. Changes of more or less importance have been introduced into every chapter; new paragraphs have been added to many of the sections; and, especially in the Second Part, many of the sections have been entirely rewritten. Chap ter XIII. Of the old text, on the Problem of Induction, has been expanded into two chapters; and, throughout this Part, an attempt has been made to bring the treatment of the various inductive methods into closer relation with a general philosophical theory. The chapter with which the text formerly closed, Rational and Empirical Theories, has been replaced by one entitled The Unification of Knowledge. It has seemed important to conclude the discussion of the nature of thought with some statement of the meaning and function of the main categories which experience involves, and, in this connection, to Indicate in a general way the necessity of a philosophical interpreta tion of the results of the special sciences. The number of problems and examples of reasoning to be analyzed has been more than doubled in the belief that fresh material of this nature will prove welcome to teachers of the subject.
