Book excerpt: Este trabalho descreve um sistema gráfico interativo, denominado FTOOL (Frame Analysis Tool), para o ensino e automatização das tarefas de projeto estrutural de pórticosplanos. No trabalho foram incorporadas as tarefas de dimensionamento de estruturas de aço segundo a Norma Canadense de projetos de estruturas de aço de edificações - CAN/CSAS16.1-94. A integração completa das fases de pré-processamento, análise estrutural, pósprocessamentoe dimensionamentos, através de uma interface amigável e eficiente, cria um ambiente onde os resultados de um passo da modelagem podem ser interpretados pelo estudante e usados como informação para determinar as modificações de modelagem no passo seguinte. Ao testar diferentes concepções estruturais, acredita-se que os estudantes podem vir a compreender melhor o comportamento estrutural e as fases de dimensionamento dos pórticos. Com as implementações realizadas no programa FTOOL, os estudantes de engenharia e os engenheiros civis executam um projeto estrutural com maior rapidez. Isso se deve ao fatode que diversas análises podem ser realizadas em um curto espaço de tempo para uma mesma estrutura, testando-se diferentes tipos de perfis metálicos. Com tal recurso, o usuário define uma estrutura mais econômica que pode atender com segurança as solicitações previstas emprojeto. Pode-se também testar possíveis padronizações de elementos visando uma facilidade de fabricação e montagem. Os critérios de dimensionamento implantados no programa permitem aos usuários não só a automatização das etapas, bem como explorar melhor as possibilidades de entendimentodos modos de ruína dos elementos estruturais e dos parâmetros controladores do dimensionamento da estrutura metálica. Estas etapas compreendem desde a determinação daclasse até a cálculo dos estados limites últimos e de utilização dos perfis pertencentes à estrutura. Estas verificações são feitas através da visualização dos resultados realizados na estrutura como um todo ou através de consultas individuais, barra a barra. A memória decálculo gerada pelo programa auxilia os alunos no entendimento de todas as etapas do processo de dimensionamento estrutural em aço.
