Book excerpt: This is a fully integrated course book aimed at university students of English in the German-speaking region. It presents a staged and clearly developed introduction to the theory of pronunciation combined with a wealth of transcription exercises provided online. The book requires no prior knowledge of linguistics. From the outset, it explains key concepts in easy-to-understand language, highlights key terms in the text for easy review, and gives translations of many of the terms into German. Additionally, a glossary provides students with a handy quick reference. The transcription exercises guide students from exploratory tasks to basic transcription to the more demanding transcription of natural dialogue, and all exercises are supplied with annotated solutions. The book is carefully divided into lessons and exercises which can be managed in 12 two-hour classes, leaving enough time for review and examination in a university term of 14 weeks or more. "a well structured and easy-to-follow introduction to the basics of the theory of pronunciation, accompanied by a carefully designed set of practical exercises and a step-by-step transcription course" (Snezhina Dimitrova, Linguist List)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive account of the segmental phonology of Hungarian in English. Part I introduces the general features of the language. Part II examines its vowel and consonant systems, and its phonotactics (syllable structure constraints, transsyllabic constraints, and morpheme structure constraints). Part III describes the phonological processes that vowels, consonants, and syllables undergo and/or trigger. The authors provide a new analysis of vowel harmony as well as discussions of vowel length alternations, palatalization, voice assimilation, and processes targeting nasals and liquids. The final chapters cover processes conditioned by syllable structure, and briefly describe a selection of surface phenomena. This authoritative account of the sound pattern of this unique language will interest phonologists and advanced students throughout the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first detailed investigation and description of phonotactic sound patterns affecting Khoesan click consonant inventories. It also includes the first quantitative study of phonation types in Khoesan languages, and the first study of phonation types associated with pharyngeal consonants all around. Although bases of OCP constraints have been presumed to be perceptual, this is the first quantitative study showing the acoustic basis of a particular OCP constraint in a specific language. Amanda L. Miller-Ockhuizen describes the phonetics and phonology of gutturals in the Khoesan language of Ju|'hoansi. Hers is the first study of voice quality cues associated with epiglottalized vowels. Thus, it is the first study to show that laryngeal and pharyngeal vowels are unified phonetically by non-modal voice qualities associated with them. It is also the first study to show that in addition to laryngeal coarticulation, whereby voice quality cues associated with laryngeal consonants are spread to a following vowel, pharyngeal coarticulation also involves spreading of voice quality cues. Thus, guttural consonants are united in that they all spread voice quality cues onto a following vowel. Voice quality cues found on vowels following guttural consonants are as large as similar cues associated with guttural vowels. This acoustic similarity is shown to be the basis of a novel Guttural OCP constraint found in the language, which is demonstrated to exist via co-occurrence patterns found over a recorded database of all of the known roots. Thus, this is the first book to provide a detailed perceptual basis of an OCP constraint. The database study also reports several other novel phonotactic constraints involving gutturals, as well as a reanalysis of the well-known Back Vowel Constraint. This book describes both phonetics and phonology of the natural class of guttural consonants, and shows through a quantitative acoustic investigation how the phonetic cues associated with these sounds are the bases of phonotactic constraints involving them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed study of Old English, taking as its point of departure the 'standard theory' of generative phonology as developed by Chomsky and Halle. Dr Lass and Dr Anderson set out all the main phonological processes of Old English and against their larger historical background (including subsequent developments in the history of English). They propose many fresh solutions to long-standing problems in the history and structure of Old English. The result is an extensive and sophisticated treatment of this subject. An important theory is examined against a well-studied body of linguistic knowledge, and is partly validated and partly revised. The book will be important for all linguistics and historians of English and Indo-European.
