Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a concrete solution to the challenges in developing higher education inIndonesia. The proposed perspectives and ideas are ideal to be developed by teachers and lecturers in their own classroom. The two best parts of this book are (1) how the educators, especially in universities, should form critical thinking habit in their classroom through respectful and scholarly discussion; and (2) how universities should become the centre of ‘teaching for learning’. Those are vital as educating today’s students is our best investment to develop their willingness of life-long learning and the ability of critical thinking. In the future, these students will determine the fate of Indonesia. Therefore, let’s empower higher education in Indonesia by applying the constructive suggestions proposed in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Indonesia, as elsewhere in Asia, education will inevitably play a key role in the national development experience as the twenty-first century unfolds. Not much international attention is paid to how the education sector is faring in Indonesia, but that is not because nothing is happening. The past decade has seen major changes in the structure of the education system and in the schooling trajectories of Indonesian children and adolescents. The administration of primary and secondary education has been decentralized to the regions. A new paradigm of school-based management has been introduced. Public spending on education has finally reached one-fifth of total government spending, as required by law. But although enrolment rates at all levels continue to increase, the quality of education remains low and has not improved, and the tertiary sector continues to experience problems of autonomy and unsatisfactory performance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the goals, efforts and outcomes of international assistance to higher education over the past three decades and investigates how these have impacted changing State-university relations. Focusing on the case study of Indonesia, Bastiaens demonstrates how international aid facilitated and at times actively encouraged changing patterns of state-university relations from state control towards greater institutional autonomy. Through the use of various case studies from throughout the country and critical analysis of the relationships between international donors and domestic reformers, Bastiaens shows how the educational system of Indonesia was able to diversify resources, generate income, and become increasingly autonomous from government.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesia's Muslims are still pondering the role of religion in public life. Although the religious violence marring the transition towards democratic reform has ebbed, the Muslim community has polarised into reactionary and progressive camps with increasingly antagonistic views on the place of Islam in society. Debates over the underlying principles of democratisation have further heated up after a fatwa issued by conservative religious scholars condemned secularism, pluralism and liberalism as un-Islamic. With a hesitant government dominated by Indonesia's eternal political elites failing to take a clear stance, supporters of the decision are pursuing their Islamisation agendas with renewed vigour, displaying growing intolerance towards other religions and what they consider deviant Muslim minorities. Extremist and radical exponents of this Islamist bloc receive more international media coverage and scholarly attention than their progressive opponents who are defiantly challenging this reactionary trend. Calling for a true transformation of Indonesian society based on democratic principles and respect for human rights, they insist that this depends on secularisation, religious toleration, and freethinking. Conceived as a contemporary history of ideas, this book aims to tell the story of these open- minded intellectuals and activists in the world's largest Muslim country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume provides an overview of the current state and indigenous practices of leadership development (LD) in a select group of emerging market economies, including BRICS, Southeast and East Asia, Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Africa. While some authors focus exclusively on LD in the business sector, others discuss such topics as LD in higher education, the role of higher education institutions in leadership development for managers and executives, the role of religious institutions, and LD in the government and public sectors. Further, chapters on Brazil, Malaysia, Russia, Thailand, South Africa and South Korea include case studies of LD in individual companies. These cases and examples can be used in discussions of indigenous LD practices in courses on international and cross-cultural HRD, HRM, and leadership and organization development. Readers will benefit from this unique view of indigenous practices and perspectives from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds: HRD, HRM, and management and leadership studies. It is an essential read for academic audiences who recognize leadership development as a dominant trend both in developed and emerging economies.
