Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Inquiry Into the Connected Uses of the Principal Means of Attaining Christian Truth: In Eight Sermons Preached Before the University of Oxford at the Bampton Lecture for the Year 1840 There is a disadvantage, however, which I may request the reader to bear in mind, attending the discussion of any complex subject in a Lecture of this description. As the separate portions were to be treated in a limited number of distinct Discourses, designed for oral delivery on separate oc casions, they required to be formed each of them into something like a whole, and the effect of statements may often appear too strong and decided, whilst they seem to stand alone, when in fact they are modified and counterbalanced by other connected portions of the entire work. Book Synopsis The School Tradition of the Old Testament by : E. W. Heaton
Download or read book The School Tradition of the Old Testament written by E. W. Heaton and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1994-10-13 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vigorous interest of recent Old Testament scholars in Israel's so-called "Wisdom Tradition" has exposed much methodological confusion and achieved no agreed results. the "wise" have not been located in any recognisable structure of Israelite society and the "Tradition" has never been pinned down as a coherent historical phenomenon. The purpose of this book is to demonstrate that the literature which has been at the centre of the debate was the characteristic product of the schools of ancient Israel, and that scholars who deny the existence of schools or ignore their influence are mistaken. Through a review of a representative sample of Old Testament writings, Dr Heaton examines the intellectual stance and literary style of the school tradition, and relates them to Egyptian prototypes. He argues that the school tradition, with its moral and rational stamina, cannot be dismissed as an eccentric development on the margin of Old Testament thought, but should be recongised as playing a fundamental role in the transmission and re-interpretation of the heritage of Israel. The book offers a lively and important challenge to the conventional presentation of Old Testament theology and to those versions of Christian theology which represent the Church as the exclusive recipient and sole guardian of the truth about God and his world.

Book Synopsis The Ways of Judgement by : Oliver O'Donovan
Download or read book The Ways of Judgement written by Oliver O'Donovan and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2008-01-29 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this probing book Oliver O'Donovan extends the exploration into the correspondence between theology and politics that he began in The Desire of the Nations. While that earlier work took as its starting point the biblical proclamation of God's authority, The Ways of Judgment approaches political theology from the political side. Responsive to developments such as the uncertain role of the United Nations after the Cold War and the expansion of the European Union, O'Donovan also draws on the extensive tradition of Christian political thought and a range of contemporary theologians. Rather than supposing, as does some political theology, that the right political orientations are well understood and that theological beliefs should be renegotiated to fit them, O'Donovan considers contemporary social and political realities to be impenetrably obscure and elusive. Finding the gospel proclamation luminous by contrast, O'Donovan sheds light from the Christian faith upon the intricate challenge of seeking the good in late-modern Western society. Pursuing his analysis in three movements, O'Donovan first considers the paradigmatic political act, the act of judgment, and then takes up the question of forming political institutions through representation. Finally, he tackles the opposition between political institutions and the church, provocatively investigating how Christians can be the community instructed by Jesus to "judge not."
Book Synopsis God's Action in the World by : Maurice Wiles
Download or read book God's Action in the World written by Maurice Wiles and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does God act in the world? Does he affect what happens to us in the varied experiences of our daily life? If so, in what ways and by what means? In an age when so many of the particular cases in which communities or individuals find themselves led to speak of God's acting prove to be cases which appear to others both morally and spiritually unacceptable, we need to give thought to the deeper underlying issue. Can God be said to act in the world at all? Does God even exist? The nature of God's action is clearly of the utmost importance for Christians, because they claim that God does act in the world and has acted specifically in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. But how does his action here relate to his action elsewhere? How do we discern it? These questions lead Professor Wiles to discuss the nature of creation, the origin of evil, providence in public and private history, and finally God's action in Christ and in us. Concerned to give a consistent overall interpretation, he provides answers which at the same time question much current Christian thinking.
