Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Inquiry Concerning the Origin of Christianity The analysis of the, four Gospels, proceeding on the admission that they may contain a mixture of truth and error, is a very com plicated but not impracticable task. It is necessary to form an opinion as to the date of each writing, the general character of each author, and his peculiarities as a writer; to institute continual comparisons between the events or discourses which he relates, and the opinions and controversies which arose subsequently to his own time to weigh the probability in favour of the real occurrence of a fact, considered in reference to the ascertained history of the time, with that in favour of its invention by the author or some intermediate narrator; to consider what greater degree of weight is due to the testimony from the accordance of all, or of several of the writers and to ascertain whether they wrote independently, or copied from each other. By this laborious method of sifting and examining, it must be admitted that it would be possible to obtain a tolerably correct history from a collection of records acknowledged to be of a very mixed character. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Origins of Christianity, Vol. 3 The fifteen or sixteen years of religious history comprised in this volume in'the embryonic age of Christianity, are the years with which we are best acquainted. Jesus and the primitive Church at Jerusalem re semble the images of a far-off paradise, lost in a mysterious mist. On the other hand, the arrival of St Paul at Rome, in consequence of the step the Author of the Acts has taken in closing at that juncture his narrative, marks in the history of Christian origins the commencement of a profound darkness into which the bloody glare of the barbarous feasts of Nero, and the thunders of the Apocalypse, cast only a few gleams. In particular, the death of the Apostles is enveloped in an impenetrable obscurity. On the contrary, the era of the missions of St Paul, especially of the second mission and the third, is known to us through documents of the greatest value. The Acts, till then so legendary, become suddenly quite authentic; the last chapters, com. Posed in part of the narrative of an eye-witness, are the sole complete historical writings which we have of the early times of Christianity. In fine, those years, through a privilege very rare in similar circum stances, provide us with documents, the dates of which are absolutely authentic, and a series of letters, the most important of which have withstood all the tests of criticism, and which have never been sub jected to interpolations. In the introduction to the preceding volume, we have made an ex amination of the Book of Acts. We must now discuss seriatim the different epistles which bear the name of St Paul. The Apostle informs us himself, that even during his lifetime there were in circulation in his name several spurious letters, and he often took precautions to prevent frauds. We are, therefore, only carrying out his intentions in subject ing the writings which have been put forth as his to a rigorous censorship. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Records: An Historical Enquiry Concerning the Age, Authorship, and Authenticity of the New Testament To deny that the truth of Christianity, the facts upon which it is built, and the doctrines which it inculcates, are Of the utmost importance to our best interests, and require to be most carefully examined, would better suit the days of intolerance on the One hand and of blind belief on the other, than the times in which we live. For the Christian religion not only sets forth a peculiar morality little insisted upon, though not wholly unknown, among the ancient nations of the world, but propounds also a variety of Speculative or scholastic doctrines, scarcely intelligible to the people - or even to a large number of their teachers - as the princi ples upon which it professes to base its moral code and, thirdly, recites a series of historical facts, on which both the moral and doctrinal codes are founded. The points Of enquiry, then, to all who would study Christianity with minuteness, are three: 1. Its moral or practical character; 2. Its doctrines or speculative aspect; and, 3. Its historical evidence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of the Idea of God: An Inquiry Into the Origins of Religion From the very beginning, however, a legend, true or false (but whose truth or falsity has no relation whatever to our present subject), gathered about the personality of this particular Galilean peasant reformer. Reverenced at first by a small body of disciples of his own race and caste, he grew gradually in their minds into a divine per sonage, Of whom strange stories were told, and a strange history believed by a group of ever-increasing adherents in all parts of the graeco-roman Mediterranean civilisa tion. The earliest of these stories, in all probability - cer tainly the one to which most importance was attached by the pioneers of the faith - clustered about his death and its immediate sequence. Jesus, we are told, was crucified, dead, and buried. But at the end of three days, if we may credit the early documents of our Christian faith, his body was no longer to be found in the sepulchre where it had been laid by friendly hands and the report spread abroad that he had risen again from the dead, and lived once more a somewhat phantasmal life among the living in his province. Supernatural messengers announced his resur rection to the women who had loved him he was seen in the flesh from time to time for very short periods by one or other among the faithful who still revered his memory. At last, after many such appearances, more or less fully described in the crude existing narratives, he was suddenly carried up to the sky before the eyes of his followers, where, as one of the versions authoritatively remarks, he was received into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God - that is to say, of Jahweh, the ethnical deity of the Hebrew people. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1976, Paul Johnson’s exceptional study of Christianity has been loved and widely hailed for its intensive research, writing, and magnitude—“a tour de force, one of the most ambitious surveys of the history of Christianity ever attempted and perhaps the most radical” (New York Review of Books). In a highly readable companion to books on faith and history, the scholar and author Johnson has illuminated the Christian world and its fascinating history in a way that no other has. Johnson takes off in the year AD 49 with his namesake the apostle Paul. Thus beginning an ambitious quest to paint the centuries since the founding of a little-known ‘Jesus Sect’, A History of Christianity explores to a great degree the evolution of the Western world. With an unbiased and overall optimistic tone, Johnson traces the fantastic scope of the consequent sects of Christianity and the people who followed them. Information drawn from extensive and varied sources from around the world makes this history as credible as it is reliable. Invaluable understanding of the framework of modern Christianity—and its trials and tribulations throughout history—has never before been contained in such a captivating work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The People of God, Vol. 2 of 2: An Inquiry Into Christian Origins Every Anglican who reflects upon his position finds himself placed in some difficulty. On the one hand, he sees that his Church, almost alone among the reformed communions, has retained a ministry which reaches back behind the Reformation and joins hands with the Church of the earliest centuries, it is not simply a type of ministry or a form of government which has been retained; it is a principle of authorization or ordination of ministers - that none may undertake the duties of the ministry, except they be ordained by those whom the Church for centuries and centuries has regarded as alone competent to ordain, i.e. the age-long and world-wide succession of Bishops. Here is this succession of Bishops reaching back through the centuries - a time-honoured continuity to which no other organization of any kind can show an equal. And if this chain is once broken, if this principle is once thrown overboard by allowing a generation to grow up without episcopal ordination of clergy, the continuity is gone for ever and cannot be re covered. For this reason every one must feel that a thing which has come down to us out of a past so remote, which has been sanctioned and hallowed by the practice of the entire Church for so many centuries, ought not to be lightly tossed aside. We must first make quite sure that it. has done the work intended of it and that it is now no more than an encumbrance. On the other hand, this adhesion to the ancient ministry though it is not the only obstacle, yet forms a serious barrier to Christian unity. It is, of course, quite true that every step we take towards the Protestant Churches takes us farther away from our Greek and Roman brethren. But one cannot help feeling that Christian divisions are nowhere more grievous or unnatural than they are between Anglicans and Nonconformists. On the evening of that day Dr. Bigg was seized by the illness of which he died, without any full return of consciousness, on July 15. A few days before he had told the Secretary to the Delegates that, though he might polish up his work to some extent as it passed through the Press, the book was as he meant it to stand. The work of the editor has therefore been narrowly limited. I have verified the references, and have added a few where it appeared that clearness required them but I have altered nothing except in the very few passages where the reference given seemed to me to be manifestly wrong. I do not know what changes Dr. Bigg himself might have introduced, but it has seemed right to leave the book as nearly as possible as it was when he sent it to the Press.
