Was made of which the book is a lithographed, or rather zincographed, copy is not known. Appel, it is supposed, was a German by whom the process of zincography was practised, a process which consisted in writing with a prepared pencil on very thin prepared paper, and transferring the work to a plate of zinc, from which it was printed. It entailed considerable difficulty, but the result in the present case is very clear, and the writing is good. The numerous contractions it contains have been expanded in the printed book, which it is hoped, with this exception, is an accurate copy of the original, even to the very evident misspellings of names of persons and places which frequently occur, but which will be patent to any student of Worcestershire History. It must be remembered that the book is an Index only to the Fines, and does not profess to contain in any sense full abstracts of them. The consultation of them at the Record Office will reveal many names covered in the list by the words alios and aliis, and possibly much information of which there is no indication at all.
