Book excerpt: Data were obtained on a parallel-flow film- and convection-cooled test section placed in the exhaust stream of a rectangular-sector combustor. The combustor was operated at atmospheric pressure and at exhaust temperatures of 589 and 1033 K (600 and 1400 F). The cooling air was at ambient pressure and temperature. Test results indicate that it is better to use combined film and convection cooling rather than either film or convection cooling alone for a fixed total coolant flow. An optimum ratio of film to convection cooling flow rates was determined for the particular geometry tested. The experimental results compared well with calculated results.

Book excerpt: The relative performance of (1) counterflow film cooling, (2) parallel-flow film cooling, (3) convection cooling, (4) adiabatic film cooling, (5) transpiration cooling, and (6) full-coverage film cooling was investigated for heat loading conditions expected in future gas turbine engines. Assumed in the analysis were hot-gas conditions of 2200 K (3500 F) recovery temperature, 5 to 40 atmospheres total pressure, and 0.6 gas Mach number and a cooling air supply temperature of 811 K (1000 F). The first three cooling methods involve film cooling from slots. Counterflow and parallel flow describe the direction of convection cooling air along the inside surface of the wall relative to the main gas flow direction. The importance of utilizing the heat sink available in the coolant for convection cooling prior to film injection is illustrated.

Book excerpt: "Cooling gas turbine blades is a crucial technique to allow higher turbine inlet temperatures. A higher turbine inlet temperature allows boosting gas turbine efficiency, which reduces fuel consumption. One of the main cooling techniques of the turbine blades is film cooling where a relatively low air temperature is used to form a blanket of cool air around the blade to shield it from high temperature gases. Many complex interrelated geometry and flow parameters affect the effectiveness of the film cooling. The complex interrelations between these parameters are considered the main challenge in properly understanding the effect of these parameters on film cooling. Testing such cooling techniques under actual engine conditions is even more challenging due to difficulty of installing proper instrumentations. Numerical techniques are viable analysis techniques that are used to better understand film cooling techniques. In this study, a simplified 2D film cooling jet blown from the slot jet is investigated under multiple variable parameters, mainly, the blowing ratio, jet angle, density ratio and centrifugal force. The performance of the film cooling is reported using local and average adiabatic film effectiveness. The main contribution of this study is exploring the effect of the centrifugal force and wall material selection using conjugate heat transfer on film cooling effectiveness. The centrifugal force reduces the overall adiabatic film effectiveness. A correlation between the blowing ratio, density ratio and injection angle is developed in this work. The highest film cooling performance was founded at a blowing ratio of 0.8, an injection angle of 30° and density ratio of 1.2."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: Various parts of aircraft propulsion engines that are in contact with hot gases often require cooling. Transpiration and film cooling, new methods that supposedly utilize cooling air more effectively than the conventional convection cooling, have already been proposed. The present report presents material necessary for a comparison of the cooling requirements of these two new methods with conventional convection cooling. Correlations that are regarded by the authors as the most reliable today are employed in evaluating each of the cooling processes.

Book excerpt: Gas turbine engines are an important technology for power generation and aircraft propulsion due to their relatively high efficiencies compared to other methods of power generation. To further improve the efficiency, pressure ratios in modern gas turbine engines continue to rise, which also causes higher temperatures in the turbine and combustor. As such, advanced cooling methods are necessary to protect the engine components from the high temperatures that occur in the engine and to maintain durability. Modern combustors commonly use a double-walled liner with impingement and effusion cooling plates. The impingement cooling enhances the backside cooling, while the effusion cooling creates a protective film on the external surface. In addition, modern combustor liners also include large dilution holes to promote mixing of the air and fuel in a process that reduces NOx emissions. However, the dilution jets interrupt the cooling film, making it difficult to cool the combustor walls, especially near the dilution holes. This study evaluates the surface cooling effectiveness and flowfield for a double-walled combustor liner with impingement and effusion cooling as well as a row of large dilution holes. The effusion cooling hole pattern was varied with three different hole patterns in the region surrounding the dilution holes including: no additional effusion holes, effusion holes blowing radially outward from the dilution holes, and effusion holes blowing radially inward toward the dilution holes. The momentum flux ratio of the dilution jets and approaching freestream turbulence were also varied. The effusion hole patterns with addition effusion holes surrounding the dilution holes improved the cooling effectiveness through in-hole convection. For each panel geometry, increasing the momentum flux ratio generally increased effectiveness levels with diminishing returns. In addition, decreasing the approaching freestream turbulence intensity increased the effectiveness across the panels. Flowfield measurements showed that the outward blowing effusion jets created a vortex that transported a significant amount of freestream fluid toward the surface at the leading edge of the dilution hole.

Book excerpt: Film cooling holes permit gas turbine firing temperatures to significantly exceed the melting point of the constituent materials by venting compressor bleed air along the surface of a component forming a buffer between the wall and surrounding gas. A film cooling hole is a passive geometric feature with performance entirely derived from the holes geometry and the operating conditions of the coolant and mainstream. Significant effort has been made to characterize a wide variety of hole geometries but no method has been put forth to determine the optimal hole geometry for a given local flow field and component. Even for traditional, subtractive machined holes this would be a daunting task, but the difficulty grows exponentially as additive manufacturing (AM) permits greater design freedom to the thermal engineer. Presented here is a validated method for determining the optimal film cooling hole geometry of both traditionally or additively manufactured components using computationally inexpensive RANS CFD. Additionally, beyond just validating existing designs, this method can generate novel designs which leverage additive manufacturings unique design space to significantly enhance performance beyond what is possible with traditionally machined holes. While this method has many limitations inherited from RANS, which we will explore in depth, it has proven robust and effective at calculating performance in any coolant/mainstream flowfield. This work stands unique in film cooling literature but will hopefully be superseded by improved methods still to come. Realizable K-epsilon RANS is validated and found to be robust in predicting the flow field of film cooling holes. This information is used to investigate the flow inside of holes where traditional experimental methods are severely restricted. Key separation regions at the inlet and diffuser are identified to be severely detrimental to film cooling performance. CFD was used to predict geometries that would improve hole performance leveraging the unique design freedoms of additive manufacturing. This resulted in large performance gains as predicted by the RANS. Furthermore, as the gross separation regions within the hole were improved, the RANS predictions of surface temperature were found to be increasingly reliably. CFD was employed to search for better performing traditional and AM diffuser designs, the best of which were verified experimentally to significantly improve performance as predicted. Finally, adjoint optimization was used to fully optimize the hole geometry yielding further improvements in performance which were again experimentally validated
