Book Synopsis An Affair of State by : Richard A. Posner
Download or read book An Affair of State written by Richard A. Posner and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: President Bill Clinton’s year of crisis, which began when his affair with Monica Lewinsky hit the front pages in January 1998, engendered a host of important questions of criminal and constitutional law, public and private morality, and political and cultural conflict. In a book written while the events of the year were unfolding, Richard Posner presents a balanced and scholarly understanding of the crisis that also has the freshness and immediacy of journalism. Posner clarifies the issues and eliminates misunderstandings concerning facts and the law that were relevant to the investigation by Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr and to the impeachment proceeding itself. He explains the legal definitions of obstruction of justice and perjury, which even many lawyers are unfamiliar with. He carefully assesses the conduct of Starr and his prosecutors, including their contacts with the lawyers for Paula Jones and their hardball tactics with Monica Lewinsky and her mother. He compares and contrasts the Clinton affair with Watergate, Iran–Contra, and the impeachment of Andrew Johnson, exploring the subtle relationship between public and private morality. And he examines the place of impeachment in the American constitutional scheme, the pros and cons of impeaching President Clinton, and the major procedural issues raised by both the impeachment in the House and the trial in the Senate. This book, reflecting the breadth of Posner’s experience and expertise, will be the essential foundation for anyone who wants to understand President Clinton’s impeachment ordeal.
Book Synopsis Indian Politics Vs. Indian Constitution by : Hari Babu E.
Download or read book Indian Politics Vs. Indian Constitution written by Hari Babu E. and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2021-01-06 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there any authority in India, who is elected, other than the President of India? None. All ministers are appointed people. They need not even be members of a house when appointed as ministers. Ours is not parliamentary democracy. It is Republican Democracy under which, there would be only one government in India which is of the President, with Governors as his subordinates in states. 30 mutually conflicting governments and perennial elections to them cannot make India one country; much less a “Sovereign Democratic Republic”. How, India is federal if Ambedkar refused to add “Federal” in the preamble? 42nd amendment of 1976 too added only “Socialist and Secular”. Constitution is ignored, President is made ineffective, people are divided on caste lines and religious lines, regional parties are formed to rake up regional issues, press became pure business, courts turned late comers, corruption and immorality in politics reached its peak. External commercial aggression is on the rise. How long India can stay independent and united?

Book Synopsis Presidential Impeachment in Latin America by : Gustavo Palamone
Download or read book Presidential Impeachment in Latin America written by Gustavo Palamone and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-12-29 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book pursues a comparative and interdisciplinary approach to assess presidential impeachments in Latin America. Mixing methodologies from legal studies and political science, it provides a novel and comprehensive assessment of some of the most controversial questions regarding the constitutional function of impeachment and its place in the theory of government. Presidential impeachments have become frequent in Latin America, yet they are still largely misunderstood by legal practitioners and the general public. As such, impeachments frequently provide for heated and polarizing debates. The misunderstandings stem from skewed expectations arising from different theories of government, legal interpretation, and presidential impeachment. The empirical evidence and arguments presented here will help to find common ground on these topics and pacify some latent tensions in society and academia. In addition, the book’s case studies cover cases that have been rarely or incompletely addressed in the literature. Some cover events so recent that they have never been analyzed elsewhere. The book proposes reconsidering certain assumptions made about systems of government, which are based on skewed expectations of impeachments. It also draws on new evidence to re-examine existing impeachment theories and develop new ones. By doing so, it offers valuable insights that may guide lawmakers to redesign their own systems, optimizing them to achieve certain goals. It will also acquaint legal practitioners with the strategies of prosecution, defense, and decision-making in connection with impeachments.

Book Synopsis Six Months in the Sandwich Islands by : Isabella L. Bird
Download or read book Six Months in the Sandwich Islands written by Isabella L. Bird and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02-19 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic of Hawaiian literature offers a charming glimpse at the splendid and fascinating world of pre–American Hawaii. Isabella Lucy Bird won fame in her own time as the most remarkable woman traveler of the nineteenth century, and Six Months in the Sandwich Isles, in which she describes her sojourn in Hawaii in 1873, is one of the gems of Pacific literature. It is safe to say that no other book about Hawaii surpasses it in fascination. Much of the charm of Isabella's writing is due to her use of personal letters for conveying her her experiences and her impressions. The thirty–one letters that compose the book were written to her beloved sister Henrietta, who dutifully stayed at home in Edinburgh to take care of the household while Isabella was away on her travels. The book is an authentic record of daily life in Hawaii in the late nineteenth century. It describes a life style during the brief reign of King Lunalilo, not too may years before the sad reign of Queen Liliuokalani ended her dethronement by revolution. Isabella Bird met royalty, missionaries, cowboys, and ordinary, everyday Hawaiians. It is fortunate that she left such a vivid narrative of her Hawaiian Interlude.
