The essay on Blois is the only one of the series which now makes its first appeal to the public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The National Character of English Architecture: The Chancellor's Essay MCMVIII Such a description would leave little room for an inquiry like the present. It sees in architectural evolution a necessary system proceeding step by step on a sequence dictated from without as new materials or new resources of science modify the constructional problem. Design, it is sometimes said, never, in the vital stages of architec tural art, is more than the effort, tentative sometimes, to roof this or span that it may happen upon beauty, but only in so far as it persuades us of its technical success, and the single significance which can reasonably be looked for in it is the significance of construction - the lucid statement in the finished work of the mechanical problem, and the means of its mechanical solution. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preface by Kenneth Frampton Winner of the 1985 Architectural Critics Award for the best book published on architectural criticism over the past three years. Since the early 1950s, Alan Colquhoun's criticism and theory have acted as a conscience to a generation of architects. His rigor and conceptual clarity have consistently stimulated debate and have served as an impetus for the pursuit of new directions in both theory and practice. This collection of 17 of his essays marks a watershed in the development of architectural thinking over the past three decades, comprising a virtual "theory of Modernism" in architecture. In his earliest essays, Colquhoun concentrated on themes that for him comprised the modernist attitude in architecture - language, typology, and the structure of form. His stance since then has consistently been to try to relate these issues to current practice and to analyze the nature of architectural expression in relation to culture. Alan Colquhoun divides his time between England, where is is a principal in the firm of Colquhoun & Miller, and the United States, where he is Professor of Architecture at Princeton University. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Six Essays: On I. The State of English Architecture; II. The Hope of English Architecture; III. The Profession of an Architect; IV. The Bane of English Architecture; V. The Ethics of Urban Leaseholds; Vi. Religious Art This, then, is the quality of mind that an architect who would be successful must attempt to satisfy; and, if he has experience and knowledge of the world, he naturally adopts the most direct and easiest method to command success. Prettiness is, of course, essential; What else is architecture for, if not'to be pretty? Of the shortcoming and offensive ness of his design he may be perfectly, or possibly imperfectly, aware; but he overlays it with ornament, and encrusts it with carving, until the whole is pronounced to be beautiful. In this great requisite of modern architecture Mr. Street fails; he has no sense of prettiness, and he substitutes con fusion; he was afraid of simple expressiveness, and he has become incoherent. He has grievously erred, not, however, from negligence or want of will, but merely from natural incapacity. Every man is not a born confectioner and if his work falls through subjection to the influence of a depraved and vulgar 'public taste, ' which yet he is unable to satisfy, Mr. Street can hardly be reproached for this unfortunate result. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Architecture, Vol. 1: Ancient Architecture While reading merely for an exercise, scholars usu ally devote very little attention to the subject matter. This is a bad habit, for two reasons -their emphasis will not be correct, if they do not read understanding ly; and, if they glide over books without gaining ideas at school, they will be apt to do so ever afterwards. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Essay on the History of English Church Architecture Prior to the Separation of England From the Roman Obedience This is but an essay upon a subject to do justice to which a treatise of many volumes would be required. It has, however, a distinct and definite aim, which should give a unity to what would otherwise appear heterogeneous in its composition. By the greater or less success with which this aim is attained this little work must be judged. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
