Book excerpt: "An extended Richardson extrapolation technique for unstructured grids is proposed: A discrete solution is obtained from an h-adaptive analysis in which the estimated error is reduced to a predetermined level and uniformly distributed over each element. The resulting mesh is then used as a base grid in constructing a hierarchy of grids via uniform element subdivision." --

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 850 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This special issue of ZAMP is published to honor Paul M. Naghdi for his contributions to mechanics over the last forty years and more. It is offered in celebration of his long, productive career in continuum mechan ics; a career which has been marked by a passion for the intrinsic beauty of the subject, an uncompromising adherence to academic standards, and an untiring devotion to our profession. Originally, this issue was planned in celebration of Naghdi's 70th birthday, which occurred on 29 March 1994. But, as the papers were being prepared for the press, it became evident that the illness from which Professor Naghdi had been suffering during recent months was extremely serious. On 26 May 1994, a reception took place in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Berkeley, at which Naghdi received The Berkeley Citation (which is given in lieu of an honorary degree) and where he was also presented with the Table of Contents of the present collection. Subse quently, he had the opportunity to read the papers in manuscript form. He was very touched that his colleagues had chosen to honor him with their fine contributions. The knowledge that he was held in such high esteem by his fellow scientists brought a special pleasure and consolation to him in his last weeks. On Saturday evening, 9 July 1994, Paul Naghdi succumbed to the lung cancer which he had so courageously endured.

Book excerpt: Dealing with general problems in fluid mechanics, convection diffusion, compressible and incompressible laminar and turbulent flow, shallow water flows and waves, this is the leading text and reference for engineers working with fluid dynamics in fields including aerospace engineering, vehicle design, thermal engineering and many other engineering applications. The new edition is a complete fluids text and reference in its own right. Along with its companion volumes it forms part of the indispensable Finite Element Method series. New material in this edition includes sub-grid scale modelling; artificial compressibility; full new chapters on turbulent flows, free surface flows and porous medium flows; expanded shallow water flows plus long, medium and short waves; and advances in parallel computing. A complete, stand-alone reference on fluid mechanics applications of the FEM for mechanical, aeronautical, automotive, marine, chemical and civil engineers. Extensive new coverage of turbulent flow and free surface treatments

Book Synopsis Mathematical and Computational Methods for Compressible Flow by : Miloslav Feistauer
Download or read book Mathematical and Computational Methods for Compressible Flow written by Miloslav Feistauer and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2003 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with mathematical and numerical methods for compressible flow. It aims to provide the reader with a sufficiently detailed and extensive, mathematically precise, but comprehensible guide, through a wide spectrum of mathematical and computational methods used in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for the numerical simulation of compressible flow. Up-to-date techniques applied in the numerical solution of inviscid as well as viscous compressible flow on unstructured meshes are explained, thus allowing the simulation of complex three-dimensional technically relevant problems. Among some of the methods addressed are finite volume methods using approximate Riemann solvers, finite element techniques, such as the streamline diffusion and the discontinuous Galerkin methods, and combined finite volume - finite element schemes. The book gives a complex insight into the numerics of compressible flow, covering the development of numerical schemes and their theoretical mathematical analysis, their verification on test problems and use in solving practical engineering problems. The book will be helpful to specialists coming into contact with CFD - pure and applied mathematicians, aerodynamists, engineers, physicists and natural scientists. It will also be suitable for advanced undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students of mathematics and technical sciences.
