Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Explorer in the Air Service It may fairly be said that the Air Service was a genuine expression of the American Idea, defined by Strunsky in one of his charming essays as splen did courage accompanied by a high degree of dis order. We lacked men Of experience; we lacked aviators Of mature judgment; we lacked able exec utive Officers with a sympathetic knowledge of avia tion; we lacked airplanes fit to fly against the Huns; and we lacked facilities for building them. The air plane industry was still in the experimental stage. NO one really manufactured airplanes in the gener ally accepted sense Of that word. NO one had even had any experience in the quantity production Of airplane motors. Yet in July, 1917, Congress appro priated in the fond expectation that before many months we could obtain air planes. In other words, America expected to win the war in the air and was utterly unprepared to do so. The American people laid an impossible task on the shoulders Of the Officers and citizens who Obedi ently undertook to produce on a gigantic scale, and without adequate plans, one of the most difficult arms Of modern warfare. Book excerpt: Hiram Bingham was a visionary, widely acknowledged in his own time for his talents as an academic, explorer and United States senator. Hailing from Hawaii, where his family before and since have provided much public service, and an expert in South American history, he became world famous for his ‘discovery’ of the Quecha capital, Machu Picchu. His amazing breadth of service also encompassed service in the national guard, and he became an aviator and organized the United States Schools of Military Aeronautics at eight universities to provide ground school training for aviation cadets. Head of the famed Third Aviation Instruction Center at Issoudun in France, he was responsible for the training of pilots from initial flying to advanced pursuit training. Accompanied by many notes and diagrams of the tactics, schemes and manoeuvres (many illustrated) used in the air war over France, these memoirs from his days as head of the Training school make for fascinating reading. Author — Lt. Col. Bingham, Hiram, 1875-1956. Text taken, whole and complete, from the edition published in New Haven, Yale university press; [etc., etc.] 1920. Original Page Count – xiv, 260 pages. Illustrations — numerous illustrations and maps.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1920 edition. Excerpt: ... advanced training for pursuit pilots it is not my intention in this chapter to furnish a manual whereby a pilot can learn to do stunts or become a good military aviator. On the contrary, since the science of aviation is so very new and the art of flying has been practised for so few years and aerial tactics are scarcely more than a few months old, the object of setting down these details is historical rather than practical. Many of the pilots that went through the course will probably find that at the time they went through things were not exactly as set down here. I have tried to portray the system as it was at the time the Armistice was signed. A few years from now, many of these manoeuvres and formations will undoubtedly seem very crude and extraordinary. The pilots who are born this year will look upon us, who strove to the best of our ability to give the most advanced course of flying in the world, as foolish old idiots. At the same time, some of them may be glad to see how we did it, and their fathers may be glad to be reminded of how it was done in November, 1918. Fields 4, 5, and 6 were under the very competent direction of Captain St. Clair Street, a most conscientious and successful commander. These fields were equipped with the 15-meter Nieuport, using the same motor as the 18-meter and the 23-meter. While not quite as small as the Baby Nieuport, it was the smallest practical avion that the Nieuport Company produced, and it was probably the most difficult plane to land. It was used extensively at the Front in 1916, but proved to be almost too delicate. Consequently, we believed that when a student had mastered this plane, he could feel confident of his ability to master readily any other type that might be assigned to him at...

Tell me how it feels to look down on the world from- the clouds." "Oh, I expect to have a high old time, Jack - three thousand feet of it, in fact. And my nerves seem to be as steady as ever." "You're a lucky boy, all right, to get this chance to try for altitude after being in the harness at the aviation field for only two months." "But my instructor tells me I was born for the life of a birdman, Jack." "I know you've talked, read, and dreamed of little else these two years back. And now, Tom, at last the germ has caught me almost as fiercely in its grip." "Yes, old boy, it means the pair of us working tooth and nail now, learning to fly, so when the time comes, we can take our places for Uncle Sam in the great game. And it isn't going to be so very far off now, with that fear ful war raging across the sea." "Well, look out for yourself, Tom. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Curtiss Aviation Book He must be so completely in harmony with Na ture and her moods that he can tell just when is the right time to attempt a dangerous experiment, and so thoroughly in control of himself that he can refuse to make the experiment when he knows it Should not be made, even though urged by all those around him to go ahead. He must feel that nothing is impossible, and yet he must not at tempt anything until he is sure that he is ready and every element of danger has been eliminated, so far as lies in human power. He must realise that he cannot change the forces of nature, but that he can make them do his work when he under stands them. Some of these qualities must be in bred in the man, but the life-story of Glenn H. Curtiss shows how far energy, courage, and tire less perseverance will go toward bringing them out. Can you count them yet? Don't tell me any of our boys are missing!" and the speaker, one of two young men, wearing the uniform of the Lafayette Escadrille, who were standing near the hangars of the aviation field "somewhere in France," gazed earnestly up toward the blue sky that was dotted with fleecy, white clouds. There were other dots also, dots which meant much to the trained eyes of Tom Raymond and Jack Parmly, for the dots increased in size, like oncoming birds. But they were not birds. Or rather, they were human birds. The specks in the sky were Caudrons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Here for the first time in a single volume are three of Richard Bach's most compelling works about flight. From his edgy days as a USAF Alert pilot above Europe in an armed F84-F Thunderstreak during the Cold War to a meander across America in a 1929 biplane, Bach explores the extreme edges of the air, his airplane, and himself in glorious writing about how it feels to climb into a machine, leave the earth, and fly. Only a handful of writers have translated their experiences in the cockpit into books that have mesmerized generations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the pantheon of air power spokesmen, Giulio Douhet holds center stage. His writings, more often cited than perhaps actually read, appear as excerpts and aphorisms in the writings of numerous other air power spokesmen, advocates-and critics. Though a highly controversial figure, the very controversy that surrounds him offers to us a testimonial of the value and depth of his work, and the need for airmen today to become familiar with his thought. The progressive development of air power to the point where, today, it is more correct to refer to aerospace power has not outdated the notions of Douhet in the slightest In fact, in many ways, the kinds of technological capabilities that we enjoy as a global air power provider attest to the breadth of his vision. Douhet, together with Hugh “Boom” Trenchard of Great Britain and William “Billy” Mitchell of the United States, is justly recognized as one of the three great spokesmen of the early air power era. This reprint is offered in the spirit of continuing the dialogue that Douhet himself so perceptively began with the first edition of this book, published in 1921. Readers may well find much that they disagree with in this book, but also much that is of enduring value. The vital necessity of Douhet’s central vision-that command of the air is all important in modern warfare-has been proven throughout the history of wars in this century, from the fighting over the Somme to the air war over Kuwait and Iraq.
