These issues, as well as numerous others, provoke emotions that run rampant--sometimes out of control and sometimes minimized to the point of being destructive. In turn, the school climate and learning environment is affected. Teachers need support to enhance their understanding of emotional intelligence (EI). Application of EI competencies can positively influence school climate. The purpose of this intrinsic case study was to understand the perceived impact of enhancing teacher knowledge and application of emotional intelligence on school climate. The study explored teacher emotional intelligence, school climate, and the intersection of the two. Emotional intelligence instruction and education were provided to the teacher research participants during the study to support their personal growth. This study provided an understanding of the impact of teacher emotional intelligence on school climate. Results indicated that teacher emotional intelligence can be developed or enhanced and that it does affect their perception of the school climate. The impact was reflected in greater teacher awareness, intentional application of EI strategies, recognition of the benefits of EI on school climate, acknowledgement of factors impeding EI and school climate, and an altered perception of their role in the school climate. The study revealed a continued need for emphasizing and enhancing teacher emotional intelligence as a means of improving school climate. Utilizing a model such as the Six Seconds Model for Emotional Intelligence proved worth the time and effort because it enhanced teacher EI and changed teacher perceptions of school climate. A need for additional time and continued EI training was also noted as a means for additional growth in a more positive school climate.

Teachers are expected to design a classroom climate that is positive and conducive to learning, fostered through meaningful interactions between and among the teacher and students. While positive classroom climate is essential for students, it is complex and difficult to achieve because of a multitude of variables that can go unseen. This research examined the relationship between classroom climate and emotional intelligence of 11 fourth-grade teachers in Garden School District. The mixed methods study includes quantitative data from both the district-wide school climate survey and the teacher emotional intelligence inventory. Additionally, interviews with both the teachers and the principals served to contextualize those findings. The findings of this study demonstrate that there is a relationship between teacher emotional intelligence and classroom climate in the subject classrooms. The competencies found in Goleman's Theory of Emotional Intelligence are strongly woven into the classroom climate. Based on the data collected, recommendations are made for the district to continue its work on improving classroom climate by promoting emotional intelligence understanding and development for teachers and students which includes providing opportunities for students to have voice and choice in their learning.

Correlations were analyzed between overall emotional intelligence and overall teacher self-efficacy, as well as between the subscales of both constructs. Furthermore, regression analysis was used to determine the predictability of teacher self-efficacy based on emotional intelligence, school socioeconomic status, and the subscales of emotional intelligence. Weak correlations were found between emotional intelligence of teachers and teacher self-efficacy levels. Emotional intelligence and school socioeconomic status were not found to be strong predictors of teacher self-efficacy. Subscales of emotional intelligence did not predict levels of teacher self-efficacy well. The current study calls into question the validity of the Reactions to Teaching Situations measure of emotional intelligence and suggests further research be conducted to determine the reason for the inconsistent findings as compared to prior studies on the relationship between emotional intelligence and teacher self-efficacy in field of education.

Data was collected from 75 teachers in three high performing schools and 75 teachers in three low performing schools from one school district. The Revised School Level Environment Questionnaire (Revised SLEQ) was the instrument utilized in the study to measure teachers' perceptions of overall school climate in addition to the five aforementioned subscales. The results obtained from the 150 surveys were analyzed using a multiple independent samples t tests to identify if there was a statistical difference between group means on the Revised SLEQ. This study is significant because it provide individuals in the field of education with evidence that their perceptions might be impacted by the academic achievement in their schools. The study was also intended to provide evidence that perceptions play a very important role in the overall effectiveness of an educational institution. The study revealed that there was a significant difference between the two populations with regards to overall school climate, student relations, school resources, instructional innovation while there was not a significant difference with regards to decision making and collaboration. Future research is recommended to investigate teachers’ perceptions of school climate with the incorporation of a larger population and the incorporation of more recent data.

In particular, the study investigated educators' perceptions regarding the influence of a principal's emotional intelligence on school culture; educators' perceptions regarding the manifestations of a principal's emotional intelligence on school culture; and educators' perceptions of the importance of school culture on a learning environment. Educators from a school district classified as rural and encompassing 105 square miles in central Pennsylvania, with an enrollment of approximately 2,600 students, completed the researcher-developed online Likert-scale survey and open-ended responses. Individual personal interviews via Zoom with 10 participants provided additional insight into their perceptions. The survey and interview questions were designed to examine the perspectives of educators' views on their principal's emotional intelligence and the influence it had on school culture. The findings of this research affirmed that educators viewed their principal's emotional intelligence as highly influencing the culture of a school. Findings indicated that principals who exhibited transformational leadership style characteristics also positively influenced a school's culture. Response data supported that the school's culture further influenced the learning environment of students, suggesting that when the learning environment was positive in nature, students' achievement and success were higher. These findings can guide future research for school administrators and leaders who want to improve their school's culture and increase overall student achievement and success.

Book excerpt: This study is intended to extend the current body of research on emotional intelligence by exploring the relationship between emotional intelligence, teacher effectiveness and teacher certification. A measure of emotional intelligence and perceived effectiveness was used to explore differences between special education teachers certified in emotional and behavior disorders (EBD) (n = 34) and general education teachers (n = 30). It was hypothesized that the special education teachers would score higher on both measures. Discriminant function analysis was performed using teacher certification as the grouping variable and scores on the intrapersonal, interpersonal and stress management composite scales of the BarOn Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i) and the Teacher Perception Scale as the predictor variables. No significant differences were found between the two groups. A secondary exploratory analysis of the data was completed to explore alternative differences between the 2 groups of teachers. Significant findings were found with regard to grade level and type of classroom setting. Overall results suggest that special education teachers reflect the general population of teachers and are not significantly different in their perceptions of effectiveness and their intrapersonal, interpersonal and stress management skills. the results of the study are presented within the context of previous empirical evidence in the field of emotional intelligence and teacher effectiveness. Limitations of the study, considerations, and recommendations for future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: In the present case study, a SEL initiative entitled the #WeCare approach was designed and implemented over a two-year time span within EM Elementary School. Through the support of school administration, the #WeCare approach provided staff training, curriculum modifications, construction of a multisensory environment room, as well as online interactive digital support tools to help teachers and support staff integrate SEL skills within their classrooms. A total of 23 teachers and support staff participated in initial training sessions, while 11 participants completed online surveys reporting on the results, including 3 participants who agreed to be interviewed in depth about their experiences. Results of surveys and interviews were analyzed and coded into four main themes including: the need for a proactive school climate, pedagogy using the RULER approach (Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing and Regulating emotions), Behaviour Management for the Digital Child, and Self-Regulation Strategies using the Harmony Room. Findings state that there was a positive climate change, where teachers created a safe and supportive environment for students. There need for further training was discussed by participants and that the teachers were motivated to implement the changes recommended. Potential limitations of the present study are discussed, and avenues for future research are highlighted with the focus of parental involvement in the #WeCare approach.
