Book excerpt: The aggregation of various Asian American ethnic groups into one homogenous block and the comparatively sparse amount of research on Asian Americans creates of one the most misunderstood groups in American society and scholarship. The aim of this dissertation is to study one Asian American ethnic group, Korean Americans, and to find the relationship between their ethnic identity formation and academic achievement. Other factors such as socialization, the role of the church, and religious identity are also investigated within the framework of the theories of second culture acquisition (SCA). Specifically, the alternation model was chosen because of the nonhierarchical nature of this two-dimensional model in which both Korean and American cultures could coexist whereby one culture does not necessarily have to be lost in order to acquire another. This quantitative study samples from Korean American students attending Bible study classes within ethnic Korean churches across two states. A battery of survey measures designed specifically for Korean Americans is used to test for ethnic and religious identity as well as socialization. To replicate academic achievement, two reading and two mathematics tests are also administered to the 45 participants. The results revealed that an additive phenomenon occurred in which students who were multicultural and/or are members of a Korean organization were shown to achieve higher scores on the achievement tests. These outcomes held true even on the reading tests when compared to students who only adhered to an American identity in which they only spoke English. The data also revealed the importance of the mastery of dual languages, in this case Korean, whereby those with higher levels of fluency exhibited increased test scores. Disaggregating Asian Americans and finding the mechanisms driving academic outcomes revealed the unique complexities and interactions of ethnicity, culture, history, migration, and language which influence and characterize one Asian American ethnic group. Using an in-depth and singular approach to studying Asian Americans revealed more piercing insights than relying on generalizations and “model minority” tereotypes as the lens with which to view this diverse group of peoples.

Book excerpt: This dissertation is a survey study that investigated Asian/Asian Americans' preferences for counselor self-disclosure (CSD) topics. The study examined the associations with participant cultural values acculturation, participant cultural values enculturation, and participant-counselor ethnic group match on participant preferences for various CSD topics. The CSD topics were derived from the Counselor Disclosure Scale (CDS; Hendrick, 1988), which was modified to include an additional subscale assessing disclosure of cultural content. The seven dependent variables were: counselor attitudes, interpersonal relationships, personal feelings, professional issues, sexual issues, success/failure, and cultural identity/experiences. Counselor-participant ethnic group match/mismatch was manipulated by indicating the hypothesized counselor's ethnicity as either "Asian American" or "White-American". Participant's enculturation level was assessed through the Asian American Values Scale - Multidimensional (AAVS-M; Kim, Li, & Ng, 2005). Participant's acculturation level was assessed through the European American Values Scale for Asian Americans - Revised (EAVS-AA-R; Hong, Kim, & Wolfe, 2005).

Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to explain the role of ethnic/racial identities and acculturation on the academic performance of Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) students (N =203) at one California community college. An ethnic identity development model was used as a framework to explain the relationships among ethnic/racial identity development, acculturation, and academic performance. A cross-sectional design was used to collect data at one point in time (during the month of October 2013) based on responses from self-identified AAPI students. Quantitative data was collected via Demographic/Background Information, the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM) (Phinney, 1992), People of Color Racial Identity Development Scale (PRIAS) (Helms, 2005), and Asian American Multidimensional Acculturation Scale (AAMAS) (Chung, Kim, & Abreu, 2004). The findings revealed that after an analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted using number of years living in the United States (p =.009) as the independent variable and grade point average as the dependent variable, there were statistically significant differences. In addition, ANOVA was conducted using age (p =.000), number of years living in the United States (p =.003), and level of education-participant (p =.002) as the independent variables and units completed as the dependent variable. There were statistically significant differences as well. The goal of this study illustrated the dynamic qualities and the contextual framework in which ethnic identity is organized at an individual level. This qualitative study focused on how ethnic identity is experienced at the individual level by exploring the words of female college students of East Asian descent using a narrative approach. Narratives are the building blocks of a person's life story and by nature are social events. Building on narrative theory, participants were asked to provide both a self-defining narrative as well as a telling narrative. The self-defining narrative is a story which conveys "how I came to be the person I am". The telling narrative asks for a recollection of a time when the participant told this story to another person. Both components of an individual's narrative can provide relevant and telling information. By employing both the narrative approach and the telling narrative approach, this study explores the subjective construction of self-defining memories and how those memories are given meaning when shared with others. This approach illustrates how rich personal narratives can be when embedded in a complex, dynamic process. The data collected from the narratives and telling narratives contributes to a greater understanding of ethnic identity development, both universally and individually, among East Asian females in the emerging adult stage of life.

Book excerpt: This study investigated Chinese Americans' perceptions and behaviors related to their race, ethnicity, overall quality of life, racism-related stress, and coping strategies. There were 4 main purposes: to determine (a) what extent ethnic identity and racial identity shared a relationship with level of distress experienced in response to racism, (b) whether there was a relationship between racial identity status and coping strategy used in response to a racist encounter, (c) whether there was a relationship between type of coping strategy utilized and racism-related stress, and (d) whether there was a relationship between racial identity and quality of life in terms of satisfaction with physical health, psychological well-being, and social relationships. Through the use of an Internet-based data collection modality, a total of 99 Chinese American adults participated in this study. They were recruited via psychology-related listservs, Chinese churches, universities, not-for-profit Asian American organizations, Internet advertising, and the snowball sampling method. Respondents were diverse in terms of age, level of educational attainment, occupation, and socioeconomic status. A series of standard multiple regression analyses were used to test study hypotheses. Results indicated that individuals higher in Conformity attitudes reported lower levels of racism-related stress and individuals higher in Immersion-Emersion attitudes tended to report higher racism-related stress. Results also indicated that individuals higher in Conformity attitudes tended to use Avoidance strategies to cope with racism and individuals higher in Immersion-Emersion attitudes tended to engage in Problem-Solving strategies. Interestingly, the use of Problem-Solving was associated with an increase in racism-related stress, regardless of respondents' racial identity status. Finally, this study found that individuals with higher Dissonance attitudes tended to report lower levels of satisfaction with their physical health, psychological health, and social relationships, and individuals with higher Internalization attitudes reported higher levels of satisfaction with their psychological health. Implications of the findings of the study with regard to service delivery to Asian American clients are discussed.

Book excerpt: Sense of belonging on campus has been identified as one of the most important factors that affect college students' persistence, retention, and graduation. The purpose of this quantitative research was to explore the within-group heterogeneity of sense of belonging among Asian American undergraduate students on campus. Specifically, I explored how institutional context, campus involvement, and students' experiences with diversity and campus climate related to sense of belonging. I also examined if there were differences in sense of belonging across Asian American student ethnic groups and if there were differences in the variables that significantly related to each ethnic group's sense of belonging. The theoretical framework used to ground this study was Astin's (1993) "Input-Environment-Outcome" (I-E-O) college impact model. A critical quantitative paradigm was used. I analyzed data from the 2015 Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership (MSL) which included responses from 6,609 Asian American college students from over 90 higher education institutions. This study found that sense of belonging among Asian American college students varied by ethnicity. Korean American students' sense of belonging was significantly lower than the overall sense of belonging level of All Asian Americans. Asian Indian students, on the other hand, reported a higher level of sense of belonging on campus, relative to the overall sense of belonging level in the sample. Factors significantly related to sense of belonging of students also varied by ethnicity. For example, number of types of academic-based experiences engaged was positively related to multi-racial Asian Americans' sense of belonging, but negatively related to that of Filipino American students.Future research is needed to assess the impact of the quality of campus involvement on sense of belonging and to understand why same factors related to each ethnic groups' sense of belonging to various degrees. As campus educators, including faculty, staff, and other personnel, work to connect Asian American college students to the campus community, they also need to move away from a color-blind approach toward a culturally responsive approach that acknowledges and celebrates students' diversity in terms of race, ethnicity, and country of origin. The finding that factors related to sense of belonging varies by ethnicity indicates that a one-size-fits-all approach to improving their sense of belonging on campus is inadequate and inappropriate. Programs and resources should be tailored to the needs of different segments of the Asian American population.
