Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to measure the effects of a volunteer music therapy program on the self-esteem and locus of control of children survivors of domestic violence residing in a shelter for domestic violence. An experimental group which received music therapy and a no-contact control group were used in this study. The Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory Scale was used to measure the subjects' selfesteem while the Nowicki-Strickland Locus of Control scale was used to measure the subjects' locus of control in both groups. These tests were administered before and after treatment for the experimental group. The control group was pre-tested during their first week in the shelter, and post-tested during their last week. No significant difference between groups was found for the subjects' self esteem while significant differences were found between groups for the subjects' locus of control. It appeared that some individual subjects in the experimental group benefited from their involvement in the music therapy sessions.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of music therapy on the quality of life of people with symptoms of dementia. Both self-reported and caregiver-reported quality of life scores were recorded before and after an eight-week treatment period. A control group of discussion and an experimental group of music therapy were included in the study, with a sample size of N = 13. Analysis of the data was done with t tests. No statistical significance was found when comparing the average quality of life scores in the discussion group or the music therapy group from pretest to posttest, in either the self-reported or caregiver-reported scores. Also, there was no statistically significant difference in the changes of scores between the experimental or control group from pretest to posttest in either self-reported or caregiver-reported quality of life scores. Finally, there was no difference in the posttest scores between the self-reported and caregiver-reported quality of life scores. Recommendations for further research include using a larger sample size, comparing the results of participants with different levels of symptoms of dementia, and comparing different types of music therapy, including vocal versus instrumental, live versus recorded music, or active versus passive participation.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to gain a richer understanding of the effect of community-based group music therapy on quality of life for individuals with developmental disabilities through the insights of four sub-groups in two community-based group music therapy choirs: choir members (people with developmental disabilities), parents/caregivers, choir leaders (music therapists) and the program supervisor. The study provided valuable feedback concerning how satisfied persons with developmental disabilities were with the group music therapy services that they had received, what benefits the choir members had derived from participating in the community-based group music therapy choirs, and how the benefits were related to the choir members' quality of life. Data were collected in group and individual interviews that were conducted with 29 individuals consisting of 18 choir members, 8 parents/caregivers, 2 choir leaders and 1 program supervisor. Key statements of each subgroup were summarized according to the transcript texts. Global themes shared by part or all of the subgroups were identified by comparing and contrasting subgroups' key statements. The result of this study showed that there is a significant positive effect of community-based group music therapy on the quality of life for individuals with developmental disabilities in the five categories of "emotional well-being," "social inclusion," "interpersonal relations," "self-determination," "personal development" and eleven subcategories of "safety," "self-concept," "happiness," "community integration/participation," "lifestyle," "friendships," "family relationships," "personal control," "choices," "education," and "skills." Thirty global themes of the effect of community-based group music therapy on quality of life for people with developmental disabilities shared by part or all of the subgroups were identified and described.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of group music therapy sessions on the psychosocial well-being of older adults living in assisted and independent living communities. Pre-and posttest was used in two different communities with twenty one participants who engaged in group music therapy sessions for eight consecutive weeks. All sessions included following interventions- music listening, singing, lyric analysis, and music-assisted movements. The researcher tested and compared participants' life satisfaction, happiness, self-esteem, and social interaction by conducting and analyzing pre and posttests. The researcher also examined whether participants' demographic variables such as age and gender would influence their psychosocial well-being. Results indicated that there were significant effect of group music therapy sessions on their life satisfaction, self-esteem, and social interaction. Further analyses of participants' demographic variables on their psychosocial well-being showed that gender indicated significant influence on their self-esteem and social interaction. These findings of the present study have implicated that the group music therapy sessions may increase the level of psychosocial well-being of older adults living in independent and assisted living communities.

Book excerpt: There has been a limited amount of research on the use of experiential education with music therapy students. Most of the research conducted has focused on the experiences of graduate level students. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to understand the potential effect of experiential music therapy education on undergraduate and graduate equivalency students' reported empathy and self-esteem. Five undergraduate and five graduate equivalency students were enrolled in a music therapy course in which they were asked to role-play the therapist and the client in mock music therapy sessions. Undergraduate participants completed the Davis Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) and the Janis-Field Feelings of Inadequacy Scale (Janis-Field) as pre and posttest measures. Undergraduates also provided responses to elicited journal questions and participated in a semi-structured telephone interview. Graduate participants completed the IRI and the Janis-Field as a posttest measure after the completion of the semester, provided responses to elicited journal questions, and participated in a semi-structured telephone interview. There were no significant changes from pretest to posttest for undergraduate students and no significant relationships between the posttest scores of undergraduate and graduate participants. Qualitative data analysis for undergraduate and graduate students indicated that participants were able to identify changes in their own empathy and self-esteem as a result of the role-playing experiences. Implications for further research are discussed.

Book excerpt: Standardized measures revealed that children's attitudes towards older adults improved, though not significantly so, after participation in the intergenerational program. Results of biweekly post-session questionnaires revealed a decrease in negative descriptions of older adults and an increase in positive descriptions of older adults -- suggesting a more positive view towards aging. Results revealed that older adults' attitudes towards children improved significantly after their participation in the intergenerational program. Improvements were found for three of four attitudinal dimensions, indicating that older adults perceived children to be more "positive," "mature," and "good" after participating in the intergenerational program. Data analysis of the psychosocial well-being measures revealed that older adults did not perceive a significant improvement in their generativity or sense of self-worth after participation in the intergenerational program. Although pre-posttest results on standardized measures of well-being were not significantly different, older adults' mean scores on the generativity and self-worth measures increased after participation in the intergenerational program. The results of other measures indicated that older adult participants enjoyed the intervention sessions, and that they perceived personal benefits from their interactions with the child participants. Over the course of the intergenerational program, participants also perceived increased feelings of usefulness. Suggestions for future research, the utility of varied measurement instruments, and implications for music therapy practice are discussed.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of group improvisational music therapy on depression in adolescents and adults with substance abuse was investigated. It was hypothesized that group improvisational music therapy would relieve depressive symptoms. Twenty-four Spanish-speaking patients receiving outpatient and inpatient treatment for substance abuse at Fundación José Felix Ribas (FJFR), located in Mérida State-Venezuela participated in the study. All participants completed the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HRSD) before being randomly assigned to experimental or control groups, each consisting of three cohort groups recruited over a nine month period. The experimental group received 12 group improvisation sessions over a three-month period, along with the standard treatment program provided at the facility, and the control group received only the standard treatment program. Post-test measures were completed at the end of each three-month treatment cycle. Differences between groups in pre-test and post-test scores were calculated using the Mann-Whitney U Test. Results showed that both groups were equally matched on all pretest measures. As for post-test measures, significant differences were found between the groups on HRSD, but not the BDI. The experimental group was significantly less depressed after treatment than the control group, as measured by the HRSD. Improvisational music therapy led to statistically significant greater improvements in psychologist-rated depression (HRSD) when compared to the regular treatment program alone; although no statistical differences were found in the improvements on the BDI between the two treatments, improvisational music therapy had a clinically significant effect. Possible explanations are offered. The most important limitations of the study were the small sample size, absence of a depression assessment tool specifically for substance abuse, and the use of the first version of the BDI instead of the second version as well as lack of information on demographic and clinical data.
