Book excerpt: The study of complex hysteresis problems has become increasingly important in recent years, since the hysteresis phenomenon affects significantly the decisions that have to be rendered in a wide range of real-world practical applications. For example, the so-called hysteresis effects may influence substantially some fields not directly related to the natural sciences such as finance, economy, or fiscal policy. In addition, such phenomenon is also typically present in many engineering and physics applications of interest such as in magnetism, spin-valve technology, semiconductors, surface physics, aeronautical and civil engineering aerodynamics, complex battery systems, biology, etc. This book focuses on the most recent attempts for modeling a diverse variety of complex hysteresis problems faced in economics, engineering, and physics. The chapters of this book provide a self-contained, rigorous, and clear treatment of the different types and sources of hysteresis under a large spectrum of applications. The book also highlights how stochastic control and other mathematical tools as well as econometric techniques can be applied for analyzing the complex properties of hysteresis problems. This authoritative book is a definitive guide on how to understand the newest designs for modeling hysteresis in highly complex systems and thus it will be an essential reading for graduate students and researchers in economics, engineering, and physics.

Book Synopsis Mathematical Models of Hysteresis by : I.D. Mayergoyz
Download or read book Mathematical Models of Hysteresis written by I.D. Mayergoyz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to describe in sufficient detail the mathematical models of hysteresis nonlinearities with "nonlocal memories. " The distinct feature of these nonlinearities is that their future states depend on past histories of input variations. It turns out that memories of hysteresis nonlinearities are quite selective. Indeed, experiments show that only some past input extrema (not the entire input variations) leave their marks upon future states of hysteresis nonlinearities. Thus, special mathematical tools are needed to describe nonlocal selective memories of hysteresis nonlinearities. The origin of such tools can be traced back to the landmark paper of Preisach. The book is primarily concerned with Preisach-type models of hysteresis. All these models have a common generic feature; they are constructed as superposi tions of simplest hysteresis nonlinearities-rectangular loops. The discussion is by and large centered around the following topics: various generalizations and extensions of the classical Preisach model (with special emphasis on vector generalizations), finding of necessary and sufficient conditions for the represen tation of actual hysteresis nonlinearities by various Preisach-type models, solution of identification problems for these models, and numerical implementa tion and experimental testing of Preisach-type models. Although the study of Preisach-type models constitutes the main subject of the book, some effort is also made to establish some interesting connections between these models and such topics as the critical state model for superconducting hysteresis, the classi cal Stoner-Wohlfarth model for vector magnetic hysteresis, thermal activation type models for viscosity, magnetostrictive hysteresis and neural networks.

Book Synopsis Scaling in Ecology with a Model System by : Aaron Ellison
Download or read book Scaling in Ecology with a Model System written by Aaron Ellison and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking approach to scale and scaling in ecological theory and practice Scale is one of the most important concepts in ecology, yet researchers often find it difficult to find ecological systems that lend themselves to its study. Scaling in Ecology with a Model System synthesizes nearly three decades of research on the ecology of Sarracenia purpurea—the northern pitcher plant—showing how this carnivorous plant and its associated food web of microbes and macrobes can inform the challenging question of scaling in ecology. Drawing on a wealth of findings from their pioneering lab and field experiments, Aaron Ellison and Nicholas Gotelli reveal how the Sarracenia microecosystem has emerged as a model system for experimental ecology. Ellison and Gotelli examine Sarracenia at a hierarchy of spatial scales—individual pitchers within plants, plants within bogs, and bogs within landscapes—and demonstrate how pitcher plants can serve as replicate miniature ecosystems that can be studied in wetlands throughout the United States and Canada. They show how research on the Sarracenia microecosystem proceeds much more rapidly than studies of larger, more slowly changing ecosystems such as forests, grasslands, lakes, or streams, which are more difficult to replicate and experimentally manipulate. Scaling in Ecology with a Model System offers new insights into ecophysiology and stoichiometry, demography, extinction risk and species distribution models, food webs and trophic dynamics, and tipping points and regime shifts.

Book Synopsis The Hysteresis Machines by : S.C. Bhargava
Download or read book The Hysteresis Machines written by S.C. Bhargava and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-12-09 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes in detail the construction and working principle of a variety of commercially available hysteresis machines. The last part of the book is devoted to a comprehensive study of an experimental hysteresis machine. The contents of this part derive entirely from the experimental and analytical work carried out by the author during his doctoral research at the University of Aston in the UK. The exhaustive range of tests and measurements, obtained by the use of uniquely devised transducers and techniques—many of these having been evolved for the first time—showcase numerous aspects of a hysteresis machine. These relate mainly to the measured waveforms of radial and peripheral flux density in the airgap and active part of the rotor as influenced by the hysteretic properties of the rotor material.
