Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boundary Layer and Flow Control: Its Principles and Application, Volume 2 focuses on the layer of fluid in the immediate area of a bounding surface where the effects of viscosity are substantial. This book is organized into two main topics—boundary layer control for low drag, and shock-induced separation and its prevention by design and boundary layer control. It specifically discusses the nature of transition, effect of two-dimensional and isolated roughness on laminar flow, and progress in the design of low drag aerofoils. The onset of separation effects for aerofoils and wings, shock-induced separation for laminar boundary layers, and shock-induced separation for laminar boundary layers are also deliberated. This volume is recommended to physicists and specialists interested in boundary layer and flow control.

Book Synopsis Investigation of Drag Reduction by Boundary Layer Suction on a 72.5-deg Swept Wind at M 2 and 2.25 by : S. R. Pate
Download or read book Investigation of Drag Reduction by Boundary Layer Suction on a 72.5-deg Swept Wind at M 2 and 2.25 written by S. R. Pate and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests were conducted in the 40-Inch Supersonic Tunnel (A) of the von Karman Gas Dynamics Facility to determine the effectiveness of boundary layer suction for laminar flow control on a two-dimensional, 72.5-deg swept wing having a subsonic leading edge. Test Mach numbers were 2 and 2.25 with a Reynolds number range based on wing chord from 3 to 14 million for angles of attack of 0.15, 0.45, and 0.75 deg. With suction, full chord laminar flow was maintained at M 2, alpha 0.15, 0.45, and 0.75 deg up to a length Reynolds number of approximately 9 million. At M 2.25 and alpha 0.15 deg, full chord lam inar flow was maintained up to a Reynolds number of 6.5 x 10 to the 6th power and for alpha 0.45 and 0.75 deg, up to a Reynolds number of 3 x 10 to the 6th power. Selected data are presented.

Download or read book Investigation of Boundary-layer Transition on Swept Wings at Mach Numbers 2.5 to 5 written by S. R. Pate and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests were conducted in the 12-in. Supersonic Tunnel of the von Karman Gas Dynamics Facility to determine boundary-layer transition locations on swept wings having a circular arc profile and modified arc profile. Test Mach numbers were from 2.5 to 5 over a Reynolds-number-per-inch range from 0.14 to 1. 08 million at sweep angles of 24, 36, and 50 deg for angles of attack of 0 and approximately -4 deg. Boundary-layer transition Reynolds numbers determined by a pitot probe, and results obtained visually with a sub limable solid are presented. The major factors influencing boundary-layer transition were wing sweep and model leading edge geometry. Increasing wing sweep and leading edge bluntness above a sweep angle of approximately 20 deg decreased the transition Reynolds number at all test Mach numbers.
Book Synopsis Analysis of the Effects of Boundary-layer Control on the Power-off Landing Performance Characteristics of a Liaison Type of Airplane by : Elmer A. Horton
Download or read book Analysis of the Effects of Boundary-layer Control on the Power-off Landing Performance Characteristics of a Liaison Type of Airplane written by Elmer A. Horton and published by . This book was released on 1950 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was made to determine the effects of boundary-layer control on the landing performance characteristics of a liaison type of airplane having a payload of 1500 pounds and a flight duration of 5 hours. The aspect ratio was varied from 5 to 15, the wing span from 30 to 100 feet, and the brake horsepower from 300 to 1200. The use of boundary-layer control caused reduction in total landing distance (25 to 40 percent), ground-run distance, gliding speed, and stalling speed whereas sinking speed was increased only slightly.

This book was released on 1948 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A performance analysis is given to determine whether bondary-layer control by suction might reduce the minimum take-off distance of a four- or five-place airplane. Results indicate that boudary-layer control might be effective in improving the take-off characteristics of this type airplane having wing loading of 10 or more pounds per square foot and aspect ratios of 10 or more.

Book Synopsis Summary of Laminar Boundary Layer Control Research by : Northrop Corporation Boundary Layer Research Section
Download or read book Summary of Laminar Boundary Layer Control Research written by Northrop Corporation Boundary Layer Research Section and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At subsonic speeds, full length laminar flow and low drags were obtained up to high length Reynolds numbers on a thin straight, on a swept laminar suction wing and on a suction body of revolution. Moderately increased suction rates in the most critical region of a straight and a swept laminar suction wing enabled full chord laminar flow in the presence of external sound. Theoretical investigatiions are concerned with nonlinear boundary layer oscillations and stability investigations (assuming small disturbances) of a supersonic laminar boundary layer on a flat plate up to high supersonic speeds as well as on a highly swept supersonic low drag suction wing of low wave drag. On a supersonic flat laminar suction plate with and without weak incident shock waves, extensive laminar flow and low equivalent drags were obtained at M = 3 up to length Reynolds numbers of 26 x 1000000. Further supersonic low drag suction experiments on a suction body of revolution, on a 36 degree supersonic yawing wing, as well as on a 72 degree supersonic yawing wing (swept behind the Mach cone) of low wave drag, are described. The latter wing showed full chord laminar flow with a subsonic type pressure distribution at M = 2 and R sub C approximately equal to 1000000. (Author).
