Book excerpt: Among other tools, the Air Force employs computer models of the chemistry in afterburning rocket plumes to assess the environmental impact of rocket launches on the upper atmosphere and, in particular, the ozone layer. To improve the accuracy of these models, it is necessary to verify the chemical mechanisms and reaction rate constants used in the models. One method by which verification can be achieved is by comparing the results of laboratory flame measurements with model predictions of combustion products. Nitrogen is present in the atmosphere at all altitudes and is entrained with oxygen into the afterburning exhaust plume of a rocket motor as it rises through the troposphere and lower stratosphere. In the laboratory, we have examined the low-pressure combustion of nitrogen-doped H2 + O2 and H2 + CO + O2 flames. The experiments were carried Out at a pressure of 50 Torr, simulating rocket plume afterburning conditions at 20 km altitude. The cool, post-flame combustion products were analyzed with a mass spectrometer and a specially modified NO(x), chemiluminescence analyzer, as the stoichiometry of the flame was varied to simulate the range of afterburning mixtures encountered in a real rocket plume. Comparisons of the experimental results with preliminary computer flame simulations are used to test the accuracy of the chemical mechanisms employed in modeling nitrogen combustion at low pressures.

Combustion-specific topics of chemistry and fluid mechanics are considered and tools described for the simulation of combustion processes. This edition is completely restructured. Mathematical Formulae and derivations as well as the space-consuming reaction mechanisms have been replaced from the text to appendix. A new chapter discusses the impact of combustion processes on the atmosphere, the chapter on auto-ignition is extended to combustion in Otto- and Diesel-engines, and the chapters on heterogeneous combustion and on soot formation are heavily revised.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title study investigates the combustion characteristics of moist H2/oxidizer and moist H2/CO/oxidizer mixtures. It involves experimental determination of laminar flame speeds with emphasis on the effect of moisture addition (0-35% in fuel mixture) using a counterflow burner apparatus. Autoignition delays of H2/oxidizer mixtures at high pressure (10, 30 and 70 bar) and intermediate temperature (907–1048K) are also experimentally determined using a new Rapid Compression Machine (RCM). The H2/oxidizer mixture is further studied with 0-40% molar concentration of moisture in the mixtures to determine the effect of water addition on ignition delay at various post compression pressures. This new RCM is designed to attain higher post compression pressures (up to 140 bar) and wider compression ratios (5-25) compared to its predecessor. Experimental results provide extensive high fidelity data for H2/oxidizer and H2/CO/oxidizer mixtures with a wide range of water addition. It can be used for the refinement of the H2/CO/O2 combustion chemistry which not only is important for simulating syngas or high hydrogen content (HHC) fuel combustion but also forms the basic building block of the hydrocarbon chemistry. Additionally, a laser absorption setup meant for in-situ, real-time, non-intrusive measurement of temperature and important species in RCM is designed using a Quantum Cascade Laser (QCL) in the mid-IR region. The transition lines of water near 7.6 om are used for the temperature and species measurements. A calibration test cell similar in dimension to the RCM reaction chamber is used to determine the line strengths and line broadening parameters in different bath gases required for the RCM study. The method of temperature and species concentration measurements in RCM is developed and demonstrated for non-reactive as well as reactive mixtures. Detailed discussions on uncertainty analysis for the temperature and species concentration measurements are also presented

This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The flame extinction limits of syngas (H2-CO) flames were measured using a twin-flame-counter-flow burner. Plots of Extinction limits vs. global stretch rates were generated at different mixture compositions and an extrapolation method was used to calculate the flame extinction limit corresponding to an experimentally unattainable zero-stretch condition. The zero-stretch extinction limit of H2-CO mixtures decreases (from rich to lean) with the increase in H2 concentration in the mixture. The average difference between the measured flame extinction limit and the Le Chatelier's calculation is around ≈ 7%. The measured OH− chemiluminescent data indicates that regardless of mixture compositions the OH radical concentration reduces (within the experimental uncertainties) to an extinction value prior to the flame extinction. Flame extinction limits of H2-CO mixtures measured in a flat-flame burner configuration also show a similar relation. Additionally, the measured laminar flame velocity close to the extinction indicates that regardless of fuel composition the premixed flame of hydrogen fuel blends extinguishes when the mixture laminar flame velocity falls below a critical value. The critical laminar flame velocity at extinction for H2-CO premixed flames (measured in the flat flame burner configuration) is found to be 3.77(±0.38) cm/s. An externally perturbed H2-CO twin flame was not experimentally achievable for the mixture conditions used in the present investigation. A slightest perturbation in the flow-field distorts the H2-CO twin-flame. The flame becomes highly unstable with the introduction of an externally excited flow oscillation.

Book excerpt: This newly reissued debut book in the Rutgers University Press Classics Imprint is the story of the search for a rocket propellant which could be trusted to take man into space. This search was a hazardous enterprise carried out by rival labs who worked against the known laws of nature, with no guarantee of success or safety. Acclaimed scientist and sci-fi author John Drury Clark writes with irreverent and eyewitness immediacy about the development of the explosive fuels strong enough to negate the relentless restraints of gravity. The resulting volume is as much a memoir as a work of history, sharing a behind-the-scenes view of an enterprise which eventually took men to the moon, missiles to the planets, and satellites to outer space. A classic work in the history of science, and described as “a good book on rocket stuff…that’s a really fun one” by SpaceX founder Elon Musk, readers will want to get their hands on this influential classic, available for the first time in decades.
