Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Experiment in Education: Also, the Ideas Which Inspired It and Were Inspired by It It was these conditions, superinduced on a ten dency previously formed - during a course at the Oswego State Normal School - to watch the pupil's mind more than the subject being taught, which forced, at last, a conviction that mind per se was not to blame, and that bad mental habits and mental life devoid of habit were legitimate prod nots of our processes of education. There natu rally followed some devising of means to lessen the evils, and so grew up a desire to experiment with children. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Easy Experiments for Schools and Families: With Home-Made Apparatus The author of these few pages on Experimentation with out costly apparatus, has felt the want of a cheap treatise on the subject, giving directions to teachers and others how to illustrate some of the important principles of natural science, by simple experiments. He has waited from year to year, heping that some one more competent than he might prepare a small volume on the subject. But while he waited in vain, he also felt that precious time and opportunities were lost, and that however imperfect, some directions of the kind here pre sented were better than none. He has also found by experi ence, in his school work of a quarter of a century, that there is nothing so well calculated to interest the young in the study of science, and to beget a taste for scientific research, as mak ing these simple experiments in the schoolroom, and even delegating the work to some members of the school. He has had the satisfaction of observing how his experimenting over a bucket full of water, twenty-five years ago, has resulted in producing some of the best and most practical scientists in the land, who, from the day that their interest was aroused, in this way. In the study of science, have pursued the study and attained efficiency and distinction. These few pages are submitted to parents, teachers and pupils, in the hope that similar and even greater good may be accomplished by the circulation of this volume, than by his oral instruction and lectures in schools and institutes, We are under obligations to Prof. G. Dallas Lind, Our Bodies, T/ie Scientific A me: ican, and others for assistance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: From acclaimed Nigerian storyteller Atinuke, the first in a series of chapter books set in contemporary West Africa introduces a little girl who has enchanted young readers. Anna Hibiscus lives in Africa, amazing Africa, with her mother and father, her twin baby brothers (Double and Trouble), and lots of extended family in a big white house with a beautiful garden in a compound in a city. Anna is never lonely—there are always cousins to play and fight with, aunties and uncles laughing and shouting, and parents and grandparents close by. Readers will happily follow as she goes on a seaside vacation, helps plan a party for Auntie Comfort from Canada (will she remember her Nigerian ways?), learns firsthand what it’s really like to be a child selling oranges outside the gate, and longs to see sweet snow. Nigerian storyteller Atinuke’s debut book for children and its sequels, with their charming (and abundant) gray-scale drawings by Lauren Tobia, are newly published in the US by Candlewick Press, joining other celebrated Atinuke stories in captivating young readers.

Book excerpt: “If you read only one book on educating children, this should be the book.… With a warm, informative voice, Bauer gives you the knowledge that will help you flex the educational model to meet the needs of your child.” —San Francisco Book Review Our K–12 school system isn’t a good fit for all—or even most—students. It prioritizes a single way of understanding the world over all others, pushes children into a rigid set of grades with little regard for individual maturity, and slaps “disability” labels on differences in learning style. Caught in this system, far too many young learners end up discouraged. This informed, compassionate, and practical guidebook will show you how to take control of your child’s K–12 experience and negotiate the school system in a way that nurtures your child’s mind, emotions, and spirit. Understand why we have twelve grades, and why we match them to ages. Evaluate your child’s maturity, and determine how to use that knowledge to your advantage. Find out what subject areas we study in school, why they exist—and how to tinker with them. Discover what learning disabilities and intellectual giftedness are, how they can overlap, how to recognize them, and how those labels can help (or hinder) you. Work effectively with your child’s teachers, tutors, and coaches. Learn to teach important subjects yourself. Challenge accepted ideas about homework and standardized testing. Help your child develop a vision for the future. Reclaim your families’ priorities (including time for eating together, playing, imagining, traveling, and, yes, sleeping!). Plan for college—or apprenticeships. Consider out-of-the-box alternatives.

This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 880 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is your child getting lost in the system, becoming bored, losing his or her natural eagerness to learn? If so, it may be time to take charge of your child’s education—by doing it yourself. The Well-Trained Mind will instruct you, step by step, on how to give your child an academically rigorous, comprehensive education from preschool through high school—one that will train him or her to read, to think, to understand, to be well-rounded and curious about learning. Veteran home educators Susan Wise Bauer and Jessie Wise outline the classical pattern of education called the trivium, which organizes learning around the maturing capacity of the child’s mind and comprises three stages: the elementary school “grammar stage,” when the building blocks of information are absorbed through memorization and rules; the middle school “logic stage,” in which the student begins to think more analytically; and the high-school “rhetoric stage,” where the student learns to write and speak with force and originality. Using this theory as your model, you’ll be able to instruct your child—whether full-time or as a supplement to classroom education—in all levels of reading, writing, history, geography, mathematics, science, foreign languages, rhetoric, logic, art, and music, regardless of your own aptitude in those subjects. Thousands of parents and teachers have already used the detailed book lists and methods described in The Well-Trained Mind to create a truly superior education for the children in their care. This extensively revised fourth edition contains completely updated curricula and book lists, links to an entirely new set of online resources, new material on teaching children with learning challenges, cutting-edge math and sciences recommendations, answers to common questions about home education, and advice on practical matters such as standardized testing, working with your local school board, designing a high-school program, preparing transcripts, and applying to colleges. You do have control over what and how your child learns. The Well-Trained Mind will give you the tools you’ll need to teach your child with confidence and success.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Montessori Method and the American School The Montessori Method has been given so much publicity by the American press that its peculiarities have become quite generally known, and one who attempts to describe them further is in danger Of repe tition. It is my aim, however, simply to offer to those who have a practical interest in its intimate details some of the impressions received through an investigation of the Method at first hand, as well as some results of experiments made among children with whom I work daily at the Iowa State Teachers College. The talks herein published are the substance of dis eussions conducted with classes, following my return from Rome. It is not their purpose to crystallize atten tion upon some one feature of the equipment or upon some one element of the method, but rather to promote the study of the principles underlying the entire equip ment and the entire method. All pedagogical history proves that reforms in edu cation develop slowly. It would' be a curious anomaly if the Children's House did not conform to this law of evolution. Its best friends are those who willingly sub mit it to the comparisons possible because of work done in the exceptionally good home, good kindergarten and good primary school of to-day, and to the tests that the psychological laboratories are urging for all educational procedure. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.
