Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is one of the last forms of congenital heart disease to yield to effective treatment. Over the past 20 years major advances in diagnostics, surgical intervention, and our understanding of the pathophysiology of HLHS - much of it developed at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia - has led to marked improvement in overall outcome for children born with this complex form of congenital heart disease. The extensive experience with over 1,000 consecutive cases of HLHS treated at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia forms the basis of knowledge for this book. Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome is a complete compendium of the "state-of-the-art" on the subject of HLHS and related conditions. The spectrum of topics covered include: genetics and prenatal evaluation, diagnostic assessment, pre- and post-operative management, latest developments in surgical strategies, as well as short and intermediate term outcomes. Sections on quality of life issues such as neurological status, feeding, and late complications are also included. Unique chapters on the impact of congenital heart disease on health care economics, concerns of the pediatrician caring for these patients, and a poignant chapter offering thoughts from a patient and families with HLHS round out the book. Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome is a single source, complete text for cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, nurses, pediatricians, parents and others who care for, or have an interest in, this complex congenital heart anomaly.

Book excerpt: "There's something wrong with your baby's heart." Until the day I die, I will never forget those words. For those words marked the beginning of our battle against congenital heart defects (CHD). They came in the middle of my pregnancy as I carried the child I'd wanted all my life. I chose to fight for my child's life, and this story was born out of that choice. Essentially a field guide for parents and grandparents of children facing CHD, this book chronicles all the details of my son's journey. Every test, every surgery, every victory that led him to today. Today he is a beautiful, intelligent, normal child. There are also facts on CHD to help you navigate the often murky waters of the medical community. This is the book that I wanted when we discovered my son's CHD. Through it, may you find the hope and guidance you need to conquer each step of your own CHD journey.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite approximately 50 years of progress in the management of com plex congenital heart disease, hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) has been one of the last cardiac malformations to yield to effective surgical treat ment. The surgical therapies for hypoplastic left heart syndrome have evolved by two quite disparate routes. One approach has been the staged reconstruc tion operations utilizing an initial operation pioneered by many but developed by Dr. William Norwood and subsequently modified by many other investigators. The first stage reconstruction operation has been refined and standardized such that the majority of infants now proceed to second and third stage reconstruc tive operations culminating in a Pontan Kreutzer single ventricle physiology. An alternative surgical approach has been the development of neonatal and infant heart transplantation for HLHS. This approach also has had a signifi cant impact on the treatment of HLHS and other cardiac malformations and has been associated with good intermediate term results. Both of the thera peutic approaches devised for treatment of hypoplastic left heart syndrome have been effective and the outcomes are continuing to improve with each.

Book excerpt: Thoroughly revised edition of this well-known text is prompted by the popularity of the previous edition among both students and practitioners. The revised edition has been endeavoured keeping the key objective of Dr Fernando Arias alive—to provide Obs & Gynae residents, fellows in Maternal–Fetal Medicine, obstetricians, general physicians and interested nurses and medical students with a source of practical information about complications of pregnancy. • Most of the chapters have been completely re-written. • A new chapter ‘Impact of Advances in Genetics on Prenatal Diagnosis’ has been added, which does justice to the enormous advances in the field of Prenatal Genetics in the recent years. • Our understanding of multiple pregnancies has increased considerably. A separate chapter on multiple pregnancy has been added given that multiple pregnancies are at high risk of developing problems and therefore require greater attention. • An entire section of intrapartum problems has been added, making this a comprehensive Obstetric text. • The editors have managed to persuade leaders in the field to write for this edition. The chapters are authored by researchers working on the coalface. Their first-hand experience, knowledge, wisdom and hard work are evident in this edition.
