Book excerpt: "Come, all ye peoples, and let us venerate the blessed Wood, through which the eternal justice has been brought to pass." So sings the Church on Eve of the Feast the Universal Exaltation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross. The love of the Cross is deeply implanted in the heart of the Church, for she finds there bottomless wells of refreshment. Her song continues: "By the blood of God the poison of the serpent is washed away; and the curse of a just condemnation is loosed by the unjust punishment inflicted on the Just." In the Church's reflection on the death of Christ, the Scriptures provide a host of divinely inspired images. Whether that of sacrifice, ransom, or victory over the powers of evil, each Scriptural paradigm is necessary, and none can be ignored or denied without doing harm to the unity and totality of Christian faith and praxis. One image which has been severely underappreciated, even denied, is that of Penal Substitutionary Atonement. Although it is not widely known, the Church Fathers did not ignore this aspect of Christ's Atoning work, and the present work seeks to make their views on the subject known. From St. Cyril of Alexandria's commentaries to St. Symeon the New Theologian's and St. Gregory Palamas' homilies to Patriarch Jeremiah's correspondence with the Lutherans to St. Philaret of Moscow's sermons, each era of the Church has affirmed what is today called Penal Substitutionary Atonement. Although the term was coined in the West, the substance of its content is Patristic. Not satisfied with merely knowing about Christ's historical sacrifice, the Church has sought to internalize the truth of the Cross. Orthodox mystical theology therefore takes up the theme of the Cross as a living reality which works in the heart to transform man through his participation with the divine nature. The present work seeks to make this connection, that between the historical cross and the living Christ, clearer in order that the Christian way of life might stand more firmly. The Christian path of practice is centered in the life of prayer. Prayer, however, is not a haphazard endeavor. The Church Fathers have ever endeavored to provide instruction that aided the faithful into deeper communion with the Lord. The ability to attend to Him without distraction, however, is constantly being obstructed by the passions. The passions are those internal motions which darken, confuse, and lead the mind astray. Therefore the passions were a principle focus of the Fathers. The present work therefore seeks to address the manner in which the Atonement speaks to the interior life of the Christian, and then to elucidate the methodology of its practice. The twin pillars of watchfulness and stillness, rooted in the reality of our co-crucifixion, co-resurrection, and co-ascension with Christ, provide the means by which a Christian can learn to walk in his new identity in Christ. Seeing the connection between theology and praxis will help the Christian avoid the trap of reducing the spiritual disciplines to mere pious duties to be performed, and give tools to aid in the deconstructing of the false identities that fallen man weaves for himself. Lastly, the very nature of what it means to be human will be touched upon. It is well known that God transcends conceptualization, but it is less well known that, since man is made in God's image, man in his experience of himself also transcends conceptualization. In other words, there is a mysterious depth to man's being which exceeds his ability to conceive, and yet he can experience these mysterious depths of his own being due to his apophatic anthropology. God, moreover, who comes to dwell in the hearts of the faithful, can thus be experienced apophatically in the mysterious depths of one's own being. In the depths of interior silence, the image bearer, man, communes with the Original Image, God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2002 Catholic Press Association Award Winner The classical expression of soteriology (salvation theology) has tended to spiritualize salvation and place it on a supernatural plane where it loses contact with the existential lives of people. In the face of this heritage, questions have risen from contemporary experience that challenge the Christian tradition. Does life have meaning? Is love at the core of all reality? In Gifted Origins to Graced Fulfillment, Kerrie Hide searches for responses to these questions. Hide examines the soteriology presented in the Revelations of Divine Love, composed by Julian of Norwich. She analyzes the understanding of salvation expressed in the Visions, or showings of Julian and expands previous theological inquiry into Julian's texts. After demonstrating how Julian's theology is a trinitarian theology of love, Hide addresses each aspect of Julian's soteriology within the framework of her trinitarian formula. The theological precis reveals that, for Julian, salvation is a process of oneing in a mystical, three-part journey from our origins with God to our ultimate return to God. Hide's analysis provides a hermeneutic for examining mystical literature theologically and demonstrates the important contribution mystical theology makes to the broader field of theology. She contributes a systematic study of Julian's understanding of salvation not undertaken previously. In Part One, Hide examines Julian's Visionary experience and her expression of the experience that led others to reflect on, record, and write about her texts. She also presents a hermeneutic for interpreting Julian's showings. Part Two presents Julian's soteriology as a trinitarian soteriology of oneing and explores how our life is in three stages. In Part Three, Hide delves into our gifted origins. She surveys Julian's creation theology and her anthropology. Part Four focuses on Christology. This section presents Christ's role in redemption through the cross, through his work as servant, and through his function as mother. Part Five inquires into graced endings. The chapters examine the present experience of graced fulfillment in the power of the Holy Spirit and the hope for fulfillment in the eschaton. Finally, in Part Six, Hide draws together Julian's understanding of salvation. She appraises the relevance of these teachings for today. Hunsinger not only offers a new and authoritative interpretation of Barth's mature theology, but also places Barth's work in relation to contemporary discussions of truth, justified belief, double agency, and religious pluralism. Through a fresh and compelling reading of Church Dogmatics, Hunsinger offers a new account of the coherence of that work as a whole.

Book excerpt: Christian theology in recent decades has seen an explosion in the number of books published seeking a renewal of Trinitarian ontology. There has also been a proliferation of studies dedicated to the theology of Wisdom. Few if any of these books on the Trinity or on Wisdom have drawn for inspiration on the comprehensive vision of French Oratorian priest Louis Bouyer (1913–2004), one of the greatest theologians of the modern age. Bouyer produced a comprehensive work of theology that integrated these two seminal concerns based on a vast “re-sourcing” of the Christian tradition. Dr. Keith Lemna explores Bouyer’s achievement in depth, showing that at the heart of his venture was a deep, contemplative penetration into God’s mediation to the world—his creation, sustenance, and redemption of creation in the Wisdom of the Eternal Son. Bouyer is a decisive resource for theologians wanting to develop the Christian understanding of the Trinity and creation based on tradition but in dialogue with modern cosmological thought. The Trinitarian Wisdom of God: Louis Bouyer’s Theology of the God-World Relationship gets to the heart of Louis Bouyer’s theology of the God-World relationship more deeply than any other has done before. In doing so, Lemna recovers a great theologian at his best.

A number of the essays in this book emanate from a conference at the Berkeley Divinity School of Yale University in 2000 that discussed the import of this momentous declaration for ecumenism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Timothy W. Reardon uncovers thesalvation narrative developed within Luke-Acts and its key themes as they develop within the Lukan presentation of time and space, while being attentive to overcoming a facile compartmentalization of religion and politics. Reardon argues that Luke-Acts offers a complete, holistic, embodied, and theopolitical soteriology, cosmic in scope, that includes both the what and how of salvation. In contrast to recent arguments for some form of vicarious expiation in Luke-Acts, Reardon instead suggests that Luke-Acts' presentation of salvation - though exhibiting elements of multiple atonement models - noticeably takes a Christus Victor form, using Irenaeus's Christus Victorparadigm in particular as a point of comparison. Throughout this book, Reardon repeatedly demonstrates that Lukan soteriology is political, examining Jesus' role as herald of God's kingdom, the salvific space of heaven and the Church, and the mission of salvation. Reardon concludes that Luke-Acts is a theopolitical salvation unfolding in space, aiming toward the reconciliation of all things.

Book excerpt: Metaphysics and Mystery: The Why Question East and West is a critical analysis, comparison and evaluation of philosophical answers, Western and Asian, to the question: “Why is there something rather than nothing?” The question, first posed by the 17th C. philosopher, Leibniz, was reintroduced in the 20th C. by Heidegger. Volume One begins with an introduction that lays out the issues raised by the Why question. It then analyzes contemporary Western philosophers who provide either cosmological-metaphysical or existential-ontological answers to the question. It also considers transitional answers that bridge the two. Volume Two examines Asian philosophers, classical and contemporary, who, though rejecting the assumptions behind the question, put forward nondualist answers that have a direct bearing on it. It concludes with an argument for a revised understanding of the Why question that draws on the strengths and weaknesses of these Western and Asian philosophies and explores implications for ethics and religious thought

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Critical Realist's Theological Method explores a systematic theology method grounded in critical realism in the wake of Alister McGrath, Imre Lakatos, Nancey Murphy, N. T. Wright, and Dale Allison. Kennard surveys philosophical and traditional theological approaches for contributions and limitations in order to set out a method for theology and science. Kennard extends this method to a Thiselton-Ricoeur hermeneutic that can fund insightful exegesis and Biblical theology in the wake of Ladd, Dunn, Vos, and Goldingay. This Biblical theology method is illustrated by wisdom literature, the traditional reef of the discipline and then developed for the contributions toward systematic theology as Gabler had originally envisioned. With contextualized Scripture sourcing most of the content for systematic theology the trajectory is shown in the subtitle Returning the Bible and Biblical Theology to be the Framer for Theology and Science. The method is exampled in exegesis of creation texts which frame possibilities for science. Likewise, Biblical theology frames a bio-ethics integration of psychology and theology setting out a transactional model for psychological recovery with University of Chicago professor Paul Holmes. A theology for peer review and work is also framed.

The triune God uses Scripture to make the community of believers live in Christ. We hear the words of Scripture in the light of Easter and Pentecost. We understand Scripture from faith in Christ and with the mind of Christ. At the same time, we come to know Christ in Scripture and we receive the mind of Christ by reading Scripture. We remain in Christ by remaining in the Word. Understanding Scripture and Christlikeness mutually reinforce each other. Living a Christian life with God and our neighbor in God’s world will deepen our understanding of Scripture. This book explores the complex relationships between Jesus Christ, participation in Christ, theological hermeneutics, and the doctrine of Scripture. It shows the necessity of a holistic approach of life, knowledge, understanding, and renewal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africans’ prevailing interest in the prosperity gospel is not only connected to the influence of American prosperity teachers reaching a worldwide audience through their imaginative use of the media, but is also related to the African worldview and African traditional religion, and its lasting influence on contemporary Africans and the way they think about prosperity, as well as their interest in prosperity in post-colonial Africa. The research from a classical Pentecostal perspective about the impact of the prosperity message on Africa is necessary, timely, and relevant because of its influence in the African Pentecostal movement and its potential to harm the faith of believers, leading to the potential disillusionment of Christian believers who put their trust (and money) in formulas and recipes that seemingly only work for others, especially the prosperity leaders who lead by example with incredulous riches and wealth.
