Book excerpt: Saudi Arabia is among the top 10 countries from which students have enrolled in U.S. universities. The scarcity of research about Saudi students in the USA was the inspiration for this study. Previous researchers have examined Saudi students' challenges and adjustment issues in the USA, but the topic of social support and academic performance remained lacking. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between perceived social support (PSS) and academic performance among Saudi international students in USA. This study was a cross-sectional quantitative survey design with a sample of 384 Saudi students enrolled in USA universities and colleges. The perceived social support (PSS) was measured by the Interpersonal Support Evaluation List (ISEL) while the academic performance variable was included in the demographic questionnaire and measured by GPA. The findings indicate that Saudi students maintain a high level of perceived social support, and more than half of the participants have a GPA higher than 3.50. The results reveal that gender, age, and having children have a significant relationship with the PSS. In addition, age, marital status, having children and years living in the USA are significantly associated with academic performance. Furthermore, findings indicate a weak relationship between perceived social support and academic performance. Demographic variables including gender, marital status, having children, and years living in the USA show statistically significant differences with PSS; in reference to academic performance, the statistically significant differences exist with the demographic variables of marital status, having children, age, and level of education.

Book excerpt: Because of the lack of support for Saudi female students in the United States and the lack of literature addressing social and academic challenges facing them, this qualitative study sought to fill the gap and answer the question of how studying abroad in the U.S. influences Saudi female students academically and socially. Since Saudi Arabia is an old country with rooted traditions that is against any new change, Structural Inertia Theory (Hannan & Freeman, 1984), Hofstede's cultural dimension theory (2001) and Schlossberg's Adult Transition theory (1995), were used as the theoretical framework for the research. These theories provided a grounded understanding to guide the research analysis. During the analysis process, the researcher divided the finding section into three main themes: (1) social challenges, (2) academic challenges, and (3) emotional and spiritual challenges. Each them included many sub-themes. The social challenges include sub-themes such as: social judgments, making friends, fitting in, mahram issues, racism and safety, balancing responsibilities, different traditions, and mobility. The academic challenges include sub-themes such as: admission and language issues, different teaching styles and laws, lack of academic support, financial hardship. While the emotional and spiritual challenges include: homesickness, stress, and missing spirituality. Since the number of Saudi female students is increasing in the United States, educational professionals might need to pay more attention to addressing their needs and ensuring that they are having a successful educational experience. According to the findings of the research, one can say that educational professionals working with Saudi female students might be encouraged to get a better understanding of the unique challenges those students are going through. Therefore, special workshops can be designed to better prepare faculty members in dealing with Saudi students in general and Saudi females in particular. Moreover, special mentoring programs may be created to assist Saudi female students during their educational experience and help them to better adjust in their new environment. It is recommended that such programs should reach out to those students since they tend to struggle in silence and do not seek help.

Book excerpt: Globalization, digitalization, and a rapid technological development of many areas of life and society, bring humanity to another level of development. Changes in the educational organizations are inevitable and the university must meet new requirements in a new paradigm (Gafurov, Safiullin, Akhmetshin, Gapsalamov, & Vasilev, 2020). Universities, as institutions capable of thinking the future, assume an increasingly relevant role at the level of the growing importance of science and its social and economic impact. In this line of thought, their metamorphosis should be promoted. This renewal requires four movements: from employability to general, humanistic, and scientific education; from the excellence of academic productivism to the valorisation of pedagogy and teaching and training work; from entrepreneurialism to a sense of community; from entrepreneurship to public responsibility (Nóvoa, 2019).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Countries in the Arab Gulf are currently experiencing some of the fastest rates of growth and progress in the world. Transforming Education in the Gulf Region argues that education systems in these countries need to use innovative pedagogies and best practices in teaching and learning to educate all citizens so that they obtain the knowledge and skills to be productive members of society. This book will contribute to the transformation of education in the Gulf countries by suggesting best practices, research outcomes and case studies from experts in the Gulf region. It has become increasingly evident in recent years that Gulf countries need to use emerging learning technologies to cater for the needs of learners and to provide maximum flexibility in learning. There is also a growing practical need to use electronic technologies, since learning materials are more widely available in electronic formats than in paper-based formats. This book focuses on the role of emerging technologies and innovative pedagogies in transforming education in six Gulf countries in the region (Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain). With contributions from experts around the world, the book argues that the time is right for Arab Gulf countries to make the transition to electronic learning and that they need to implement the outcomes of research and adopt best practices to transform and revolutionize education to prepare learners in the Gulf region for the 21st Century. The book should be of interest to academics and students in the areas of higher education, learning technologies, education policy and education reform. It should also be of interest to educators and policymakers in the Gulf region.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The number of Saudi students studying in the United States quintupled over the last five years due to a fully funded Saudi government scholarship. The presence of this growing student group on American campuses has significant implications for student affairs professionals, college professors and university administrators. Moreover, Saudi students are experiencing circumstances different from other international students due to distinctive economic, academic, psychological, social, cultural, religious, and political factors. Therefore, the problem dealt with in this study is a three faceted issue: 1) the recruitment circumstances of the Saudi students as a different category of international students and the implications entailed once they are admitted into their programs; 2) the different accommodating mechanisms in place to help them achieve success, attain degrees, obtain expected college experiences; and 3) how effective the aforementioned mechanisms are with regard to Saudi students' expectations, challenges, motivation, and self-efficacy beliefs. Following a pilot study, the qualitative case study approach was determined to be best suitable for exploring the various dimensions of Saudi students' circumstances especially those concerning cultural, psychological, and social issues. The study followed the traditional qualitative method for data collection and analysis. After conducting initial site observations and document reviews, primary data were collected from open-ended interviews with students, administrators, and professors at the university. Study findings revealed various implications arising from the continuous increase of Saudi students on American higher education campuses. Relevant themes emerged from the data analysis including: cultural adjustment, self-efficacy, challenges, stereotypes, persistence, success, support mechanisms, and academic integrity. Participant responses and university support systems were utilized to develop a replicable model that can be adopted to ease the cultural adjustment of new international student groups. Findings also demonstrated how various campus units developed techniques to increase Saudi students' engagement for academic success. The current study showed that, self-efficacy beliefs, success perceptions, and cultural aspects as relevant constructs of student academic achievement, can be utilized to increase the performance level of Saudi students. Using the New International Student Group Response Model to guide orientation programs, college success seminars, freshman year programs, student life planned activities, multicultural events, and other academic activities. When coupled with an academic awareness of the case, the informed planning of these activities can increase Saudi students' academic persistence and enhance their college experience outcomes consequently.
