Book excerpt: Author's abstract: The Multidimensional Model for Sport Leadership (MML) (Chelladurai, 1980) states that athlete performance and satisfaction are functions of the congruency between the preferred leadership of student-athletes, the required behavior of the coach as dictated by the situation, and the actual behavior of the coach. The model was developed nearly 30 years ago and while research outside of sport has indicated that leadership preferences have changed with generations, the MML is still the most widely accepted model for sport leadership. As such, research in sport should examine how appropriate the model is to todays athletic culture. Gender, one member characteristic, has been researched considerably, with conflicting results, while race has been largely ignored with preferential leadership. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine what extent the preferred coaching behaviors reported by student athletes vary based on race, gender, and playing time and measure the congruency of those preferences with the actual coaching behaviors reported by coaches. NCAA Division-I student-athletes (n = 140) and head coaches (n = 14) in Baseball, Mens and Womens Basketball, Mens and Womens Soccer, Softball, and Volleyball were surveyed using the Revised Leadership Scale for Sport (RLSS). Using multiple regression analysis, the author attempted to predict what coaching behaviors student-athletes preferred based on student-athlete gender, race, and playing time. None of the regression models were significant, indicating a lack of variance between the predictor groups. Also, the current data revealed that student-athletes reported a significantly higher means in the Democratic Behavior and Situational Consideration subscales than head coaches, indicating a degree of incompatibility between student-athlete preference and actual coaching behaviors. A revision of the RLSS might yield more significant and meaningful results, as two of the subscales displayed low levels of internal consistency.

However, there is limited research in student-athlete personality dispositions and how those might influence student-athlete perceptions of preferred leadership behaviors. The purpose of the present study was to examine views of leadership in light of certain personality dispositions. This research examined the potential influence of optimism (Abramson, et al, 2000) on qualitative descriptions of preferred leadership behaviors using the Revised Leadership Scale for Sport (Zhang, & Jensen, 1998) to structure the interview questions. 106 NCAA Division I studentathletes in a southeastern university completed the Life Orientation Test-Revised (LOT-R), the results of which were split into three groups: low optimists, middle optimists, and high optimists. The low and high groups of student-athletes were considered for the qualitative interview. There were several similarities between the two groups regarding instructive behavior, feedback behavior, relatability, coach traits, and situational actions, but there are also several differences between the two groups in how the student-athletes prefer their coach to approach them. These differences are highlighted best in the category Reactive Behaviors with the high optimistic theme Encourages implying preference for a coach to focus on present emotions in order to attain future success while the low optimistic theme Reassures Athlete of Ability implies the 2 preference for a coach to focus on past successes in order to attain success in the present. The category Coach Orientation (relationship- v results/task-focused) was much more convoluted than expected following past research. All four categories and emergent themes are described in full. Four focus groups (male coach and male athletes, male coach and female athlete, female coach and male athletes, and female coach and female athletes) were used to assess athletes' perceptions of their past coaches' communication behavior compared to their preferred coach communication behaviors. Coding of the focus groups revealed that although females prefer to talk to their coaches about topics related to running, they also wanted to talk about more personal topics. However, for females to talk about personal topics they needed to feel comfortable with their coaches, which was dependent on the coaches' characteristics. Conversely, males desired to talk to their coaches about more serious topics, such as their training and competition, as well as other professional runners' training and competition. Although males desired to more often talk about serious topics, they also recognized there were times when joking around and being less serious with their coaches was appropriate and necessary. In short, men preferred to talk 'shop' more than women did. Based on these results, suggestions for coaches are discussed.

A total of 68 participants, both males and females, from 18 to 24 years old, with at least one year of high school varsity basketball experience read a scenario in which they were either taken out of the game or left in the game after a mistake. Results indicated that being taken out of the game did not lower athletes' sport-confidence, nor did their confidence differ from those that remained in the game. Those taken out of the game did report lower perceptions of the coach's competence. Future research should focus on different types of sports, athletes who consistently encounter this situation, and the type of feedback given by their coach.

Book excerpt: "Recent literature suggests that coaches play a significant role in creating a climate that fosters self-determined motivation among athletes. Coaching style influences athlete perception, motivation, and performance. Research supports that an autonomy-supportive coaching style is an effective motivational tool for coaches, whereas a controlling coaching style is ineffective. Previous research has shown that an autonomy-supportive interpersonal style increases self-determined motivation among athletes. However, previous research typically includes only one interpersonal coaching style. In addition, there is minimal research looking at needs satisfaction mediating the relationship between coaching behavior and athlete motivation through the SDT continuum. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of autonomy-supportive and controlling coaching behaviors with high school athletes' motivation as well as needs satisfaction. High school athletes from the Western region of North Carolina (n=162) completed the Coach Behavior Scale in Sport, Controlling Coach Behavior Scale, Behavior Regulation in Sport Questionnaire, and the Basic Needs Satisfaction Sport Scale. Correlations and multiple regression analyses were used to analyze relationships among coaching behaviors, needs satisfaction, and motivation. The hypotheses were 1) autonomy-supportive coaching behavior is positively related to higher forms of self-determined motivation and needs satisfaction, 2) controlling coaching behavior is negatively related to self-determined forms of motivation and needs satisfaction, and3) needs satisfaction mediates the relationship between coaching behavior and athlete motivation. As predicted, autonomy-supportive coaching behavior was positively and significantly correlated with higher forms of self-determined motivation (intrinsic: r=.463; integrated: r=.512; and identified: r=.558), whereas controlling coaching behavior was positively and significantly correlated with more extrinsic forms of motivation (external: r=.411 and amotivation: r=.279). Autonomy-supportive coaching behavior was positively correlated with all three needs (competence: r=.479, autonomy: r=.583, and relatedness: r=.582), and in turn, the three needs positively predicted higher forms of self-determined motivation. Multiple regression results indicate that the relationships of autonomy-supportive and controlling coaching behaviors with motivation are partially mediated by perceived needs satisfaction, but the relationships differed for different forms of motivation. Evidence for mediation was strongest for intrinsic motivation, and for integrated motivation and identified motivation, autonomous coach behavior added to the prediction suggesting the relationship was not fully mediated by needs satisfaction. For external regulation, controlling coaching behavior was a strong direct predictor with no evidence of mediation. The results indicate that autonomy-supportive coaching behavior predicts need satisfaction and enhances athlete motivation whereas controlling coaching behavior reduces self-determined motivation. In addition, the study also aimed to see what male and female student-athletes prefer in their coaching leadership behaviors. The study consisted of 21 (N=21) people, 19 student-athletes between 18-21 and two coaches. The Leadership Scale for Sport (LSS) and Sport Motivation Scale-II (SMS-II) were both utilized in order to determine the relationships. Results showed there is no significant relationship between leadership styles of coaches and athlete intrinsic motivation. In addition, results show that male student-athletes prefer training & instruction and female student-athletes prefer positive feedback in their coaches’ leadership behaviors. Future studies could look into the relationship of leadership styles and athlete intrinsic motivation in DI and DII athletes. A larger sample size of both coaches and many different team sports are two areas to be also further examined.

The study included 121 NCAA Division I, team sport student-athletes and their respective head coaches from two institutions in the Midwest. One of the institutions was a medium sized, four-year, co-educational private university and the second was a large sized, four-year, coeducational public university. The first research question examined the demographic profile of the collegiate student-athletes participating in this study. The second research question studied the relationship between how NCAA Division I student-athletes perceived themselves demonstrating the Five Practices of Exemplary Student Leadership (Kouzes & Posner, 2008; Kouzes & Posner, 2013; Kouzes & Posner, 2014) and their respective head coaches' perceptions of these behaviors. Using Pearson product-moment correlation, three significant relationships existed between student-athletes and their head coaches for Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, and Enable Others to Act. The third research question undertook paired samples t-tests to investigate the difference between how NCAA Division I student-athletes perceived themselves as demonstrating the Five Practices of Exemplary Student Leadership (Kouzes & Posner, 2008; Kouzes & Posner, 2013; Kouzes & Posner, 2014) and how their respective head coaches perceived them demonstrating these behaviors. Paired samples t-tests revealed significant differences between student-athletes and head coaches for each practice, Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart. The fourth research question explored the difference between how NCAA Division I female and NCAA Division I male student-athletes perceived themselves as demonstrating the Five Practices of Exemplary Student Leadership (Kouzes & Posner, 2008; Kouzes & Posner, 2013; Kouzes & Posner, 2014) and how their respective head coaches perceived them demonstrating these behaviors. The researcher used ANOVAs and paired samples t-tests to analyze the question. ANOVAs revealed statistically significant differences for the practices of Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart. Paired samples t-tests revealed statistically significant differences for both genders with all Five Practices of Exemplary Student Leadership. In addition, paired samples t-tests showed differences in 18 out of a possible 20 cases involving academic year in school and The Five Practices of Exemplary Student Leadership. In conclusion, scores between student-athletes and coaches for Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, and Enable Others to Act showed a small, positive relationship; therefore, as student-athletes' scores increased so did their head coaches' scores. ANOVAs revealed significant mean differences in scores between female student athletes and their respective head coaches to male student-athletes and their head coaches. For all five practices, paired samples t-tests showed that the difference between mean student-athletes scores and mean head coaches scores were significant and that gender was not a differentiator when comparing scores for the practices. The independent variable with the most influence was academic year in school. Six-of-the-seven significant findings revealed smaller mean differences in scores between the upper-level student-athletes and coaches compared to lower-level student-athletes and coaches. Finally, significant differences existed in 18 of 20 possible cases comparing the mean scores of student-athletes to their head coaches for the Five Practices of Exemplary Student Leadership when examining student-athlete academic year in school.

In the past, researchers have found links between coaching styles and the behavior and thought processes of athletes, but no research has been conducted regarding the effects of coaching behavior on the development of social physique anxiety in athletes, male or female. The results of this research have the potential to benefit the athletic community by providing them with more information regarding the mental health of athletes. This was an ex post facto correlational study. Each participant completed two surveys: The Social Physique Anxiety Scale (SPAS) and the Coaching Behavior Scale for Sport (CBS-S). The data were analyzed using a one-tailed bivariate correlational analysis. There was no statistically significant correlation found between levels of SPA and general previous coaching behaviors experienced (r= -0.24, p= 0.07). However, there was a statistically significant correlation of -0.30 (p= 0.03) between levels of SPA and the Competition Strategies construct of the CBS-S.--
