Book excerpt: Early identification of children with reading problems is a vital element of academic success at all grade levels. Thus, it is crucial that educators select and implement efficient reading assessments and procedures. The purpose of this study was to investigate third grade archival data of students over a 2-year period at one school to determine if a relationship existed between the DIBELS 3rd grade oral reading fluency scores and the reading scores on Stanford Achievement Test and the reading scores on the Alabama Reading and Math Test. Archival data from 80 third grade African American students who were assessed with all three assessments was used to conduct this study. Pearson and Spearman statistical tests were performed on the data to examine the relationship between DIBELS (oral reading fluency) and the reading section of the Stanford Achievement Test and the reading section of the Alabama Reading and Math Test. The results indicated a relationship existed between DIBELS oral reading fluency scores and the reading scores on Stanford Achievement Test and the reading scores on the Alabama Reading and Math Test during the 2009-2010 school years.

Book excerpt: If DIBELS [Dynamic indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills] oral reading fluency (ORF) is found to predict student achievement on the Integrated Louisiana Educational Assessment Program (iLEAP), then having this data is critical to identifying and meeting the needs of struggling readers. . . . The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between oral reading fluency and reading comprehension. Additionally, the study explored the relationship between student performance on DIBELS-ORF and its prediction of student performance in reading comprehension as measured by the iLEAP. Moreover, this study examined socioeconomic status (SES) as a factor influencing reading subscores of reading achievement. The data were obtained from 15 elementary schools (seven Title I schools and eight non-Title I schools) in a North Louisiana school district. A total of 1,094 participants were administered the . . . DIBELS diagnostic screener and the . . . iLEAP in fall 2008 and spring 2009. . . . Results showed a significant relationship between oral reading fluency and reading comprehension. Also, it was determined that DIBELS-ORF is a statistically significant predictor of student performance of iLEAP reading subscores. This study provided evidence that DIBELS-ORF is a reliable diagnostic tool that educators can use to assist in planning and implementing prescriptive interventions to address weaknesses of students with reading deficiencies. Further implications for practice as well as recommendations for future research are discussed. -Author

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the predictive strength and decision-making utility of oral reading fluency as it relates to reading comprehension. The relationship of DIBELS ORF scores and the Language Arts (LA) Mississippi Curriculum Test 2 (MCT2) scores was explored. Specifically, the research questions addressed were: (1) Is there a significant relationship between third grade students' Oral Reading Fluency score on DIBELS and Reading Achievement level on the third grade Mississippi Curriculum Test, second edition (MCT2) for language arts? (2) Is there a significant relationship between third grade students' obtained MCT2 proficiency levels of minimal, basic, proficient, and advanced and DIBELS Oral Reading Fluency performance levels? and (3) Is there a significant relationship between third grade students' obtained MCT2 language arts scale score (student achievement) and other factors: gender, lunch status, and attendance. When DIBELS ORF scores and MCT2 Language Arts scores were compared using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation, a positive correlation existed for the data collected from 261 third grade students in the Mississippi delta region (2007-2008 and 2008-2009 cohorts). A Two-Way Chi Square revealed that students who performed at the low risk benchmark for DIBELS ORF also performed in the proficient and above ranges on the MCT2 (LA). Finally, an Independent Samples T-Test demonstrated that other factors such as gender and attendance were not significant in predicting MCT2 (LA) performance. However, lunch status showed some significance with one cohort of third grade students. Nevertheless, the findings from this study are in alignment with other states such that a high correlation between the state assessment (MCT2) and DIBELS ORF exists. The researcher found evidence that the use of DIBELS ORF as a formative assessment tool, along with other variables, may provide useful data to educators to identify students at risk of reading failure on the third grade end- of- year MCT2 (LA). The information provided from this research supports the contention that DIBELS ORF data may be used to inform intervention decisions in order to prevent future reading failure.

Book excerpt: Current emphasis on adequate academic progress monitored by standardized assessments has increased focus on student acquisition of required skills. Reading ability can be assessed through student achievement on Oral Reading Fluency (ORF) measures. This study investigated the effectiveness of using ORF measures to predict achievement on high stakes tests. Study participants included 312 students across four Title 1 elementary schools in a Southwestern United States school district utilizing the Response to Intervention (RTI) model. Participants' ORF scores from first through third grade years and their third grade standardized achievement test scores were collected. In addition, information regarding reading interventions was obtained. Pearson product-moment correlations were used to determine how ORF scores and specific reading skills were related. Correlations were also used to assess whether the ORF scores from the fall, winter, or spring were most related to high stakes test scores. Additionally, the difference between computer-based versus instructor-led interventions on predicting high stakes test scores was assessed. Results indicated that correlation coefficients were larger between ORF and reading comprehension scores than between ORF and basic reading skills. ORF scores from spring were more highly related to high stakes tests than other times of the year. Students' ORF scores were more strongly related to high stakes tests when in computer-based interventions compared to instructor-led interventions. In predicting third grade high stakes test scores, first grade ORF scores had the most variance for the non-intervention sample, while third grade ORF scores had the most variance for the intervention sample.

The scores that were analyzed were from the Reading Comprehension subtest of the SAT 10 and the Oral Reading Fluency (ORF) subtest of DIBELS. The research question this study answers is as follows: Is there a correlation between the DIBELS Oral Reading Fluency subtest (ORF) scores and the Reading Comprehension score on the SAT 10 for third grade students? The statistical results of this study were gathered for approximately 50 third grade students from a public school in central Alabama. A Pearsons R was used to analyze the data to see if there was a significant correlation. After the data was evaluated, the results proved that there is not a statistically significant correlation between DIBELS ORF scores and the Reading Comprehension scores. Recommendations for further research includes collecting data from a larger number of students, collecting data from another school system, analyzing specific demographics within the data collected, etc.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between reading fluency and reading comprehension by measuring both constructs using grade-level academic text, and to determine the relationship between reading fluency and reading comprehension when reading fluency performance was examined at the quantile level. Six hundred and five second and third grade students in a Mountain West state participated in this study and were assessed on their reading fluency and reading comprehension abilities using the Narrative Language Measures: Reading (NLM:R), a subtest of the CUBED, which measures reading fluency through a timed reading task and reading comprehension through a narrative retell task. This assessment is based on grade-level, academic text which is aligned with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) (Petersen & Spencer, 2016). As prior research has demonstrated (Reese, Suggate, Long & Schaughency, 2010; Shapiro, Fritschmann, Thomas, Hughes, & McDougal, 2014), this study found a weak relationship between reading fluency and reading comprehension when reading comprehension was assessed using a narrative retell task. When the relationship between reading fluency and reading comprehension was examined at every 10th percentile of fluency performance, reading fluency and reading comprehension demonstrated a tenuous relationship. The differences between reading comprehension performance at the 10th percentile of reading fluency and all other percentiles were not significant. The results of this study suggest that curriculum based measures for oral reading (CBM-Rs) may not be an appropriate indirect measure for grade-level reading comprehension.

Book excerpt: The quantitative research design that used pre-existing data compared Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) Retell Fluency Skills among students in the third grade at one rural south Alabama school. The research began when the teacher researcher determined that students at the site of study may score higher in reading comprehension on standardized tests when instructed by a particular reading program. The purpose of the project was to compare reading test scores when instructed with a certain reading program: Open Court verses Scott Foresman Reading Street. The project involved a random selection of 25 students in third grade in the school years of 2007/2008 and 2008/2009. In this study, the researcher included empirical research on the history of reading and reading comprehension strategies. Research was collected on each reading program as well. The null hypothesis was not rejected due to the fact that there was not a statistically significant difference in reading comprehension test scores.

Book excerpt: The goal of this study was to determine if Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) Oral Reading Fluency is an indicator for Scantron Performance Series Reading Comprehension. Using a mixed methods research study, the researcher utilized existing end of the year DIBELS and end of the year Scantron Performance Series data, and teacher perception questionnaires to measure the relationship between the two assessments. Results indicated that DIBELS Oral Reading Fluency subtest at the end of first grade is an indicator for Scantron Performance Series Reading Comprehension assessment at the end of third grade. Implications and suggestions for future research or interventions provided between the two assessments have been included.

Book excerpt: Recent legislation allowing educational agencies to use Response to Intervention (RTI) in determining whether a child has a specific learning disability, coupled with a focus on large-scale testing and accountability resulted in the increasing use of curriculum based measurement (CBM) as a tool for understanding students' progress towards state standards, particularly in reading through the use of oral reading fluency measures. Extensive evidence of oral reading fluency's predictability of reading comprehension exists, but little research on differential effects across racial, gender, and socioeconomic subgroups is available. This study investigated racial, gender, and socioeconomic bias in DIBELS Oral Reading Fluency (DIBELS ORF) probes predictive and concurrent relationship with MAP reading comprehension scores for African American and Caucasian students. Participants were 834 second through fifth grade students in a school district located in a southeastern US state. The dataset consisted of student fall and spring DIBELS ORF scores and spring MAP reading comprehension scores. Concurrent correlation results between spring DIBELS ORF and MAP reading comprehension scores were moderate to large and statistically significant across all grades and demographic groups; however, correlations between fall DIBELS ORF and MAP reading comprehension scores were generally weak. Stepwise multiple regression analyses were used to examine the best variable, or combination of variables, in predicting MAP reading comprehension scores. Models differed for each grade level; however, spring DIBELS ORF scores were always included, whether alone or in combination with demographic variables, in the best prediction model. Potthoff's procedure was used to simultaneously test for slope and intercept differences among regression equations to determine if DIBELS ORF scores from fall and spring differentially predicted MAP reading comprehension scores across demographic groups. Nine of 24 simultaneous contrasts demonstrated a significant effect; seven were related to race, one was related to gender, and one was related to socioeconomic status. Racial bias in predicting MAP reading comprehension performance from spring DIBELS ORF was found. Differential prediction among gender and SES groups was not consistent indicating little to no practical significance. Results are discussed in the context of practical implications of differential validity, both predictive and concurrent, and potential impact on disproportionality.
