Book excerpt: This final report describes the research work done to investigate the behavior of a packed column contactor as an ozonation reactor for destruction of organic contaminants in groundwater treatment. Both a laboratory and pilot-scale column have been used during experiments to gather scale up information for such a system. The columns have been operated in either cocurrent and counter current mode using trichloroethylene (TCE) at low ppm levels in water as the contaminant. The TCE removal and destruction has been measured as a function of gas to liquid (G/L) ratio, contacting pattern, and ozone concentration. Using the experimental results and literature information, mathematical modeling has been done to describe and simulate the system behavior.

Book excerpt: Present efforts have developed photocatalysts best suited for the destruction of hydrophobic and hydrophilic organic contaminants. Using solar Insolation with Pt-TlO2 supported on silica gel, the best supported photocatalyst identified in a systematic evaluation, can mineralize trichioroethylene (8 mg/l) completely in a short time of 1.3 minutes. The destruction rate using this supported catalyst is four times greater than that using the optimized slurry made with the best photocatalyst Identified, and sixteen times greater than using a slurry made with the best commercially available catalyst. Catalyst supports are successfully surface-modified to increase adsorption capacity and in turn the overall destruction rates. Using solar insolation or artificial light sources for the applications in both water and air phases, the fixed-bed processes utilizing the supported photocatalyst have successfully mineralized other compounds with a wide range of adsorbabilities and photoactivities. Present efforts also have developed an adsorbent regeneration strategy: using saturated steam followed by photocatalysis to regenerate the spent adsorbents, and to destroy the desorbed organic compounds in the steam or steam condensate. Limited efforts have been made to model photocatalysis and steam desorption. The technologies have been tested successfully in the field at Tyndall AFB, FL and K.I. Sawyer AFB, MI and at a water treatment plant in Wausau, WI.

Book excerpt: Assessment of Supercritical Water Oxidation System Testing for the Blue Grass Chemical Agent Destruction Pilot Plant reviews and evaluates the results of the tests conducted on one of the SCWO units to be provided to Blue Grass Chemical Agent Destruction Pilot Plant. The Army Element, Assembled Chemical Weapons Alternatives (ACWA) is responsible for managing the conduct of destruction operations for the remaining 10 percent of the nation's chemical agent stockpile, stored at the Blue Grass Army Depot (Kentucky) and the Pueblo Chemical Depot (Colorado). Facilities to destroy the agents and their associated munitions are currently being constructed at these sites. The Blue Grass Chemical Agent Destruction Pilot Plant (BGCAPP) will destroy chemical agent and some associated energetic materials by a process of chemical neutralization known as hydrolysis. The resulting chemical waste stream is known as hydrolysate. Among the first-of-a-kind equipment to be installed at BGCAPP are three supercritical water oxidation (SCWO) reactor systems. These particular hydrolysate feeds present unique non-agent-related challenges to subsequent processing via SCWO due to their caustic nature and issues of salt management. This report provides recommendations on SCWO systemization testing inclusive of durability testing and discusses systemization testing objectives and concepts.

Book excerpt: Commonly used treatment methods for chemical contamination of groundwater and industrial wastewaters is not always effective and some technologies, such as in situ soil venting and air stripping, create an adverse secondary environmental impact, since the contaminants are simply transferred from soil to air. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are promising alternatives for the treatment of hydrocarbons (halogenated and non-halogenated) and other organic chemicals found in contaminated water and in off- gases produced by other treatment technologies. This symposium discussed state-of-the-art and emerging technologies in the field; examined case studies that have successfully demonstrated, at bench-scale, pilot-scale, and full-scale levels, the use of AOPs for the removal of organics from water and air; and discussed current and pending R,D&D studies. The document presents the papers given at the symposium, covering the need for AOP; theory, chemistry and kinetics; product development and emerging technologies; and current state-of-the-art field applications and case studies.

Book excerpt: In recent decades, scientific insight into the chemistry of water has increased enormously, leading to the development of advanced wastewater and water purification technologies. However, the quality of freshwater resources has continually deteriorated worldwide, both in industrialized countries and in developing countries. Although traditional wastewater technologies are focused on the removal of suspended solids, nutrients and bacteria, hundreds of organic pollutants occur in wastewater and affected urban surface waters. These new pollutants are synthetic or naturally occurring chemicals that are not often monitored in the environment but have the potential to penetrate the environment and cause known or suspected adverse ecological and/or human health effects. These contaminants are collectively referred to as the "Emerging Contaminants" and are mostly derived from domestic use and occur in trace concentrations ranging from pico to micrograms per litre. Environmental contaminants are recalcitrant for conventional wastewater treatment processes and most of them remain unaffected, leading to the contamination of receiving water. This scenario leads to the need for an advanced wastewater treatment process that can remove environmental contaminants to safely monitor fresh water sources. This book explains the technologies of biological and chemical wastewater treatment processes. The biological wastewater treatment processes presented include: (1) bioremediation of wastewater that includes aerobic treatment (oxidation ponds, aerating lagoons, aerobic bioreactors, active sludge, percolation or drip filters, biological filters, rotating biological contactors, biological removal of nutrients) and anaerobic treatment (anaerobic bioreactors), anaerobic lagoons); (2) phytoremediation of waste water consisting of engineered wetlands, rhizofiltration, rhizodegradation, phytodegradation, phytoaccumulation, Phyto transformation and hyperaccumulators; and (3) mycoremediation of wastewater. The chemical wastewater treatment processes discussed include chemical precipitation (coagulation, flocculation), ion exchange, neutralization, adsorption, and disinfection (chlorination / dechlorination, ozone, UV light). In addition, this chapter explains the wastewater treatment plants and illustrates them in terms of plant size, plant layout, and plant design and installation location.
