Book excerpt: Cores from 36 bridge decks were evaluated to assess the condition and quality of the concrete by petrographic methods and direct and indirect measures of the transport properties. Transport properties were measured by a rate of absorption test (ASTM C 1585) and by electrical conductance using the rapid chloride permeability apparatus (ASTM C 1202). The decks were distributed across Virginia to reflect the varied geographic and climatic regions. Two bridge age groups, each constructed under different specifications, were represented: (1) from 1968 through 1971, where portland cement concrete with a maximum specified water-cementitious material ratio (W/C) of 0.47 was used with uncoated reinforcing steel; and (2) from 1984 through 1991, where the specification required a maximum W/CM of 0.45, required epoxy-coated reinforcement, and allowed the use of fly ash or ground slag as supplementary cementitious materials. The older group included 10 decks, and the younger included 26. In the younger group, 8 were identified as containing fly ash and 7 were identified as containing slag. Five of the concretes exhibited excessively high spacing factors, suggesting susceptibility to freezing and thawing damage, although only two showed signs of such damage. Four of the decks exhibited excessively small spacing factors that could significantly affect strength. Signs of poor paste quality attributable to excessive water were noted in approximately one-third of the concretes. Cracking was of significance in 12 decks but was limited to paste cracking in 6; of these, 5 contained either fly ash or slag. Four showed signs of damage related to alkali-aggregate reactions, including 3 with carbonate rocks, 1 of which contained slag. A general assessment based on petrographic observations showed a fairly even distribution of good, fair, and poor ratings. Fly ash and slag concretes tended to have initial rates of absorption in the lower third, often despite their petrographic rating, suggesting they are providing beneficial reductions in transport properties in field concretes. The secondary (longer term) rate of absorption related better with the petrographic ratings, and the fly ash and slag concretes again tended to have lower rates. Of the fly ash and slag concretes exhibiting paste cracking, only one consistently had high absorption rates. In contrast to the rate of absorption results, the electrical conductivity results suggested little differences between the concretes, raising questions about its usefulness in evaluating mature field concretes. This study demonstrates the beneficial contributions that fly ash and ground slag as supplementary cementitious materials provide to concrete durability, and they should continue to be used as an integral part of efforts to increase the service life of concrete structures. ASTM C 1585 provides a direct measure of the transport properties of concrete and should be incorporated into both the concrete materials acceptance and asset evaluation and management programs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to “High-Performance Eco-Efficient Concrete” and concrete fatigue behavior, more sustainable construction materials, capable of complying with quality standards and current innovation policies, aimed at saving natural resources and reducing global pollution. The development of self-compacting concretes with electric arc furnace slags is a further achievement. In addition, the technical and economic viability of using coarse recycled aggregates from crushed concrete in shotcrete, enhanced quality and reduced on-site construction time are the basic features of prefabricated bridge elements and systems, biomass bottom ash as aluminosilicate precursor and phosphogypsum were discussed. On the other hand, basalt fiber improving the mechanical properties and durability of reactive powder concrete, alkali-activated slag and high-volume fly ash and the potential of phosphogypsum as secondary raw material in construction industry, the effects of fly ash on the diffusion, bonding, and microproperties of chloride penetration in concrete were studied. Increasing amounts of sustainable concretes are being used as society becomes more aware of the environment. Finally, the circular economy as an economic model of production and consumption that involves reusing, repairing, refurbishing, and recycling materials after their service life are presented in this book.

Book excerpt: NCHRP Report 566 is designed to help facilitate the use of supplementary cementitious materials to enhance durability of concrete used in highway construction, especially bridge decks. The report includes a methodology for selecting optimum concrete mixture proportions that focuses on durability aspects of concrete and the performance requirements for specific environmental conditions. The methodology is presented in a text format and as a computational tool, in the form of a Visual Basic?driven Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. Background information and a hypothetical case study was published as NCHRP Web-Only Document 110: Supplementary Cementitious Materials to Enhance Durability of Concrete Bridge Decks. The Statistical Experimental Design for Optimizing Concrete (SEDOC), the computational tool for the concrete mixture optimization methodology, and the user?s guide are available in a ZIP format for download.

Book excerpt: A two part laboratory experimental program was conducted to evaluate strength and durability of various concrete mix designs. In Part I of the study, the influence of using Grade 120 ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) on the strength and durability properties of concrete was evaluated. GGBFS was used to replace Portland cement at replacement rates ranging from 0 to 75 percent. In Part II of the study, the influence of coarse aggregate size on the strength and durability of the ODOT Class C mix designs was evaluated. Coarse aggregate sizes included #57, #46, and #357. The ODOT high performance concrete mix designs were also included in this study.

Book excerpt: Since it was first recognized as a mineral admixture for concrete in the 1930's, fly ash has been the subject of worldwide study as researchers work to maximize its economical and environmental benefits. In recent years, investigations have focused on the physical, chemical and mineralogical characteristics of fly ash and their specific correlation to the performance of concrete. This book collects the latest results from these various studies and offers a complete review of the advantages of fly ash as an admixture in concrete, including strength development and improved chemical resistance and durability. A review of the current international standards on fly ash usage is provided, in addition to an extensive reference list and a complete survey of various other fly ash products, such as bricks, mineral wool and gypsum wall boards, as well as the use of fly ash in waste management.

Book excerpt: High-Volume Mineral Admixtures in Cementitious Binders: Towards Carbon-Neutral Construction delivers an overview of the broad applications of high-volume supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) in cementitious binders, addressing the most promising ways to use them to reduce carbon emissions in the construction and building industry. This book focuses on the applications and scientific challenges of high-volume SCMs blends, elaborating on the possibilities as well as offering original perspectives on using different kinds of blended cements in the manufacturing process. Emphasis is placed on activity estimation and quality assessment, the properties of high-volume SCM-blends at both the fresh and hardened stages, self-hydraulic properties, and potential use as the sole binder, as well as associated environmental impacts and carbon footprint reduction. Presents the macro-/microproperties of high-volume (SCMs) cements. Introduces the state of the art in the use of high-volume SCM cements. Discusses the associated environmental impacts and the contribution to carbon neutrality by using high-volume SCMs. Associated with the disposal of man-made waste in the production of building materials. Discusses the advantages of using waste materials in cement production which reduce environmental impacts and contribute to sustainable development.
