Book Synopsis Understanding by Design by : Grant P. Wiggins
Download or read book Understanding by Design written by Grant P. Wiggins and published by ASCD. This book was released on 2005 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is understanding and how does it differ from knowledge? How can we determine the big ideas worth understanding? Why is understanding an important teaching goal, and how do we know when students have attained it? How can we create a rigorous and engaging curriculum that focuses on understanding and leads to improved student performance in today's high-stakes, standards-based environment? Authors Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe answer these and many other questions in this second edition of Understanding by Design. Drawing on feedback from thousands of educators around the world who have used the UbD framework since its introduction in 1998, the authors have greatly revised and expanded their original work to guide educators across the K-16 spectrum in the design of curriculum, assessment, and instruction. With an improved UbD Template at its core, the book explains the rationale of backward design and explores in greater depth the meaning of such key ideas as essential questions and transfer tasks. Readers will learn why the familiar coverage- and activity-based approaches to curriculum design fall short, and how a focus on the six facets of understanding can enrich student learning. With an expanded array of practical strategies, tools, and examples from all subject areas, the book demonstrates how the research-based principles of Understanding by Design apply to district frameworks as well as to individual units of curriculum. Combining provocative ideas, thoughtful analysis, and tested approaches, this new edition of Understanding by Design offers teacher-designers a clear path to the creation of curriculum that ensures better learning and a more stimulating experience for students and teachers alike.

Book Synopsis Professionalizing Teacher Education by : Claire Wyatt-Smith
Download or read book Professionalizing Teacher Education written by Claire Wyatt-Smith and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-06-30 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a significant contribution to conversations about teacher quality and graduate readiness for teaching. It presents empirical insights into how a multidisciplinary team of researchers, teacher educators, and policy personnel mobilized for collective change in a standards-driven reform initiative. The insights are research-informed and critically relevant for anyone interested in teacher preparation and credentialing. It gives an account of a bold move to install a collaborative culture of evidence-informed inquiry to professionalize teacher education. The centerpiece of the book is the use of standards and evidence to show the quality of graduates entering the teaching workforce. The book presents, for the first time, a model of online cross-institutional moderation as benchmarking to generate large-scale evidence of the quality of teacher education. The book also introduces a new conceptualization of a feedback loop using summative data for accountability and formative data to inform curriculum review and program renewal. This book offers the insider story of the conceptualization, design, and implementation of the Graduate Teacher Performance Assessment (GTPA). It involves going to scale with a large group of Australian universities, government agencies, and schools, and using participatory approaches to advance new thinking about evidence-informed inquiry, cross-institutional moderation, and innovative digital infrastructure. The discussion of competence assessment, standards, and change processes presented in the book has relevance beyond teacher education to other professions.

Book excerpt: This book is intended for students, instructional designers, professors, instructors, teachers, trainers, software developers, and development team leaders who: • are taking a course on creating computer-based training/educational software applications • are or will be working on a computer-based training/educational software development team • need to expand their skills into the multimedia technology field • are excited about the possibilities of teaching with multimedia • have worked on their own and unsuccessfully tried to do it all • may have created mediocre computer-based training/educational software • want to do it right the first time • need a practical reference • need practical guidelines for creating computer-managed presentations This book focuses on the practical principles of creating computer-based training/educational software applications and computer-managed presentations. In computer-based training/educational software applications, the computer assumes the teaching role. In computer-managed presentations, you maintain the responsibility for teaching the learners and use what is contained in the presentation as a resource. In a sense, computer-managed presentations are a subset of computer-based training/educational software applications. Their differences will be highlighted throughout this book. This book will not make you an expert in designing computer-based training/educational software applications. Expertise comes through years of experience and continual learning. However, this book will provide you with the foundations for creating professional, instructionally-effective products. To gain support for your computer-based training/educational software applications and computer-managed presentations and to silence the critics, it is important to create excellent products. People will notice quality much more than quantity. This is especially true for your first project. This book, with its numerous practical hints, will help you do it right from your first project onward.

This book was released on 2024-07-25 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classroom full of students can be overwhelming for teachers. It is critical that teachers are able to filter and meaningfully interpret the relevant information in this complex scenario. Much of this filtering and interpretation occurs through selective visual perception. Over the last decade, a rapidly growing number of studies in empirical educational research used eye tracking to investigate teachers' selective visual perceptual processes in the classroom. Theoretically, visual attention and perception are often conceptualized as knowledge-based noticing coupled with knowledge-based reasoning about what is visually perceived. Recent eye-tracking studies have shown that experienced teachers, in particular, show improved selective attention of classroom events through faster detection of relevant information and improved monitoring of learning-relevant situations. Researchers agree that a critical driver of selective attention processes is the professional knowledge (declarative, procedural, and metacognitive) of (experienced) teachers, which controls selective perceptual processes in a top-down process. The findings are significant and provide important insights for research on teacher professionalization.
