Book excerpt: The main objective of this study is to evaluate the hog marketing system in Canada, considering such questions as whether the system ensures adequate supply, encourages growth and expansion, and provides investment and employment opportunities. Various performance indicators are used to evaluate marketing goals. These indicators are developed from sources including interviews with hog-pork sector representatives and many types of secondary data. After an introduction, chapter 2 provides an overview of the Canadian hog-pork sector, including production, exports, and the role of various marketing bodies. Chapter 3 reviews the hog-pork sector in the United States, including markets and pricing systems for finished, feeder, and breeding hogs. Chapter 4 contains the evaluation of Canadian hog marketing goals using the performance indicators developed. The final chapter explores opportunities and challenges facing the Canadian hog-pork sector at the close of the 20th century.

Book excerpt: Growing interest in the teletype marketing system of selling hogs, following the implementation of such a system in Ontario and Manitoba, and the possibility of an integrated Western Canadian system, prompted the initiation of this study. The object of the study was to determine the optimum number, size, and location of assembly yard facilities in the prairie provinces in order to minimize the cost of marketing the region's hogs. It was felt this would provice a good basis for the extension of the existing systems and the implementation of any additional systems into the region. Data for the study was obtained from the Manitoba Hog Marketing Commission, the Western Tariff Bureau, the Ontario Hog Producers Co-operative, as well as the 1961 Census of Agriculture and other Dominion Bureau of Statistics publications. The approach in this study included the obtaining of the functional cost of transporting hogs from avialable data by different types of trucks and the application of these functions to a matrix of distances between points on the Prairies... These results showed the flow patterns of hogs from producing regions to designated assembly yards and then to final plants as well as the costs associated with the system. The results showed: 1. The choice of 26 assembly yards a. In the three province model: 3 in Manitoba, 9 in Saskatchewan, and 14 in Alberta. 2. Back-hauling in eastern Saskatchewan when the assembly function is restricted to within the province hogs. 3. A slight increase in total cost when assembly is restricted to within the province hogs. 4. Efficiency would be increased by reducing the number of assembly yards presently operating in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study evaluated the market performance of the Alberta Pork Producers' Marketing Board which became the single selling agency for hogs in Alberta in 1969. Con cepts of pricing and operational efficiency were applied in the evaluation and analysis, with comparisons made of alternative market areas (Winnipeg, Toronto and the average of the U.S. 7 markets) during various time periods. Market information was assessed because improvements tend to increase operational and pricing efficiency. The timeliness, quantity, and quality of hog market information have increased since the Board's inception. Cost reductions in the hog marketing system were used to assess operational efficiency since the Board's incep tion. Cost savings were introduced through the Board's establishment of the Producers' Hog Indemnity Fund and assem bly yard system. The Board's sales department and data pro cessing department have also shown other areas of increased operational efficiency through their hog allocation system, "check float mechanism", and hog settlement procedure. Pricing efficiency was evaluated through graphical illustrations, statistical measurements, correlation co efficients and econometric models. Results from these techniques were compared between different market areas during various time periods, which represent policy changes of the Board. Results of the models which tested the re lationship between price spreads between various markets and transportation costs, and analysis of the relationship between alternative price variables indicated improvements in pricing efficiency had occurred since the Board was established. However, evidence from the model which tested the relationship between price variables and supply variables between various markets and time periods suggested that after the Board's formation improvements in pricing effi ciency were lacking. The major conclusions from this study were that the Board's selling procedures improved market information and operational efficiency. However, a firm conclusion concern ing pricing efficiency could not be made because of the mixed evidence on improved pricing efficiency since the Board's inception. It was recommended that other agricultural marketing sectors become involved in co-operative selling through a single selling agency.
